Autocross - looks like cheap fun?

Anyone else tried this out before?

First one is on Wednesday. I'm going to head down to watch and if it looks like fun might grab a cheap shitter off gumtree and go have some fun.

    Anyone else keen?

there should be a gunmetal R32 with RB28 tucked away somewhere, not being used, that would be perfect for this

ran a VS commo once and had a blast. There is a thread already on this if you haven't seen.
You can share the car with up to 4 people I think so its ridiculously fun and cheap. Rally tyres if you want to be somewhat competitive.

They also hold these in bunbury, beverly and a few other places which we haven't done yet but Bunbury track looks really good!

Oh so the President has to start the thread for anyone to be interested!? :P
    Already a thread Brockas.

I can't make this Wednesday but will do the one after which is in early December. It's good fun and you DONT need gravel/dirt tyres. Toward the end of the night the racing line is so smooth you're actually quicker on road tyres!

^^ So can we have cliff notes on the basic things that make a suitable car? Too lazy to read rulebooks etc

Yes, I'd say so. By the final runs of the night you can hear tire squeal from some cars.
That said, this year it looks like the course takes in a bit more of the outer dirt (as opposed to the inner clay) which can get a bit choppy.

If you run road tyres it's slippery as hell for the first run or two (fun!) but by nights end when you're quicker and the track's quicker it looks like roadies are generally the way to go.

my niece has a semi fucked suzuki swift sitting in her garage... might have to pinch it.
How hard to get it ready for racing?
I'm assuming an extinguisher as the minimum??

We're on our third car so far. It will die this season, well that's the plan. Not so easy to kill an 80s RWD Toyota it seems... Budget $300 tops for a car. Add extinguisher. Race. Smash stuff. Kick out panels or smash off the rest of the damage. Race again. If the smoke gets let out, simply don't turn off between runs.

Very cheap (well, it can be) and great fun. Will miss this round too, but dec or jan is the plan.

We don't touch the car. Tyres, Plugs, oil, water all remain as obtained. Car gets faster as it gets lighter as bits get deposited on the track. Lifting for tyre barriers is optional. Note to self, remember to lift when in expensive car!

Absolutely no rules except fire extinguisher. Head lights and windows are optional. If you want to win i reckon something like a na impreza 4wd. If you want lots of fun something like a ef / el falcon ir vr / vs commo 6 banger with a welded diff. This does not suit your mantra of if it is worth doing it is worth overdoing mr Blaise.

When I sold my First old 68 Mini, I had a chat with the buyer that he built his own open chassis with Mini front sub frames for the Autocross.

Would make sense if I was thinking about it.
Light skeleton with a short wheel base.
Making reverse entry and around the cones would be easy compared to bigger cars.

So from reading this thread, it sounds like insane amounts of fun if you use a proper cheap shitter.

So keen. Will go have a look tomorrow night and then tee something up. I suspect an informal AL challenge will be the go!
