    4x4 Day Out - Dwellingup

Date: Sunday the 15th of April
Meet Point: Good old Ranger Camping Kelmscott
    Meet time: 09:00 - 9:30 Depart

We'll be playing around the Dwellingup area for this one.

Real 4x4's only please. We don't want another day wasted due to a poorly setup vehicle like last time.

Mayb try changing driving style? If u feel a wheel lift up back off the throttle. A spinning wheel suddenly getting traction is probably one of the main causes of failures in 4wding.

(and yes before anybody says anything I am aware of the irony associated with a Landrover owner hanging shit on LADA's for reliability...)

    Haha

Ive been through everything to try and work out why they snap, i could blame my driving style but to be honest its happend even why I havnt been giving it shit, just idleing up a hill, completely random.

installed a detroit locker in it but that didnt really help, now I just snap both :P

ran a straight bar through the diff, housing is good. checked front and rear ratios and they match (thought it might be binding up). I ran 33's on my last one for over a year and hammerd the absolute fuck out of that and never snapped an axel

is it possible something could be loose in the diff housing and when it torques up it twists or deforms out of shape and is enough to throw the axle out of alignment and snapps it?

well the way it sits it cant really move anywhere, there was no play in the actual center itself and the other end has new bearings, plus its held in there by 4 bolts at the wheel end.

Mechanic has tried telling me its due to using the center diff lock on hard ground, but im pretty anal about unlocking it as soon as I get up a rutted section if it was needed. plus ive never had this problem on any other niva so I call bullshit

you can see here, they always snap in the same place, and is a prick to get the brocken bit out of the diff

Just asking but besides snapping and replacing axles, have you tried using another diff itself? Is the diff housing bent at all making the axle not true square for alignment into the diff?

Urs would be fine Shaun, its more so a warning as last trip i was on with these boys there was a Range Rover sport on the factory 20's with street tyres. Pretty much spoiled the whole day as it spent most of its time burried in the sand before splitting a coolant line. 6hr trip and only made it 5km up the beach from Lano.
Rated recovery points would be the only MUST HAVE

I have the latest HEMA 4x4 track atlas for WA and there's a fair bit to do there. I'll see if I can scan the pages at work and post them up to give everyone an indication of what's in mind.

Other than that, it's play by ear and see what happens on the day. I am not familiar with Dwellingup, but one of the guys from WCC suggested the area and was fairly keen, so I'm assuming he's been there before.

If there is anyone here with experience in the area, it would help to shed a little light on the subject.

I have only been down there a few times. Around Harvey dam there is a bit of stuff including Bobs Hill and a fair few other hill climbs. I have done the Captain Fawcett track before which is a fairly tame flat track but I believe there is alot of tracks off the sides of it to try.
Around Louge Brook dam is supposed to be pretty good as well and can go from there right thru to Dwellingup or the other way to collie.

Doesn't look like I will b able to make this one as I won't have my clutch fixed in time unless I do it myself in the next couple weeks but 4wd gearboxs are fuckin heavy.
