After abit of tossing up between the trek and the specialized I ended up buying two specialized today. Rockhopper comp for me and a Myka HT for the missus. Havent picked them up yet but was pretty happy with the price from Midland cycles.

ps Marty went to see your mate at commited but they didnt have many bikes so had to go to Midland to actually ride/see them.

current bontrager 29-2's are soft as shit and the rear constantly feels like it's flat. have ridden about 200km and they are almost gone.
If you're road riding pump them up to 50psi, then lower the pressures when you hit the trails. Because we ride on pea gravel you will never get a tyre that suits both, but I would prefer to have grip off road and be slower on the road anyway.

Cheers for the link! Have been looking at CRC etc, but any spending will have to wait till after shitmas.

What Garmin are you running? Have never delved into "mini" GPS unit before.
I have a Garmin Edge 705. The 800's look nice, touch screen and shit, but you can find 705's cheap enough if you hunt around. Has cadence sensor and heart rate monitor (not that I ever wear it, always forget)

I used to run Maxxis Crossmarks on the Reign when I had it setup with 3 x 9 gearing. Would frequently ride on paths or the road with 50-60psi, seemed to roll rather well. Also seem to be the rear tyre of choice for many here (Was watching the Cape to Cape doco on SBS the other week - everyone was running them).

prob is he is a small / newly renovated bussiness that getting getting eaten up by the big bike companies .. so having instore stock is big hard atm ..

they are at 50psi, and still feels very soft in the rear... i know there will be a trade off, these feel poop though!

cheers! will give it a go on the rear. i have 3x10 gearing, but the 1st and 3rd chainring seem a bit redundant.

Why not support the bike shop who has them in stock and lets you ride them. Test riding elsewhere and then going to order at your mates shop is unfair to the bike shop who put up their own cash to look after customers. Midland is a small shop too but still manages to provide test bikes for its customers.

Yeah not to start a shit fight or anything (marty I appreciate the heads up on your mate) but I was at Midland for an hour or so riding bikes and asking questions so I bought from them, I thought $1500 for the two bikes was good enough after the time the young bloke put in showing me through the bikes.

You really shouldn't be using the whole spread of the rear cassette just from your middle chainring, it will cause your chain, cassette and chainring ramps to wear out prematurely. If you take a look at a gearing ratio chart, you will see there is only really about 11 usable gears as such, all the other ratios are so close together you dont notice the difference.

changing to 1x10 is pretty much what i was getting at. :P
i was going to annoy you again and ask about what to look at. currently have a SRAM S800 crank (22/33/44T), with what i'm pretty sure is a Truativ powerspline bottom bracket.

Im running a 11-25t road cassette with a 42 sproket front chain ring on a 1x10 setup and find while riding from joondalup to west perth, i only use the bottom 5 gears.

I changed from originally a 39 to the 42t chainring and didnt notice any real difference. Somewhere around a 45 would be perfect for me as far as riding footpaths/roads on my mtb.

If you want to ride off road you will sacrifice speed on road. The fastest I can get spun out on my 1x9 (34x11) is about 38kph on flat ground and that's with 2.4" tyres.

Anyone chasing a crankset for their fixie / single speed conversion?

I've possibly got a set of near new Sugino Messengers, 46T chainring and matching Sugino sealed BB available.. PM if keen, as I've tracked down a set of Dura Ace NJS track cranks / bb and Sugino Mighty Competition chainring to replace them

I'm off to NZ ... so late Jan early Feb now Unless you are down south over Xmas time, I'll be riding down there.

Have also entered Karri Cup 100k and the Dunsborough X-Adventure ...

ps..... fuck you and your "efficient bikes" ... 100km on 14kg 6" travel bike - CAN!

Heading to Albany on Saturday actually, but taking the road bike.

If Karri cup has heaps of firetrail/open stuff then that suits me more, the technical stuff is where I'll be slow and/or faceplant into a few trees . Riding flat out for a few hours, no problem!

Alrighty, I need help from the Fixie Guru's. I need to get my fixie up and running for Saturday. I have an old road bike and need a crankset - Joe, you could be the man for this! But what I really need and it might be a bit hard is a flip/flop hub with an eccentric spindle as I have vertical dropouts and thus have no horizontal play for tightening the chain.

Surely some of the fixie masters have a room full of wheels and cranks! LEt me know :-)

    Cheers

    Ruari

Meh, just needs a chain fitted and to take it home, and the time to ride it. 2 weeks off being sick I totally lost motivation, now hell keen to get MTB out whilst the weather is still good. :-)
