Merida was using the FSR link and all of Specializeds tooling etc in Taiwan ( where mine is " handcrafted " ).

From Memory, to be able to sell in a certain country they had to split ties and go opposite, same as Avanti ( all the Avanti PLus stores used to automatically sell Specialized, now it's split off.)

Fitted a 2.4 Conti Mountain King up front this evening, 220grams shaved off.

Also have a 2.2 Race King for the rear to put on - same weight as the 2.25 Crossmark, though I'm a bit concerned the RK does not have the same high volume/large bag that the Crossmark has.

Interested to find out what people here who are in the know would recommend for something in the 1k range.. to be used for the same purposes that monk listed above..
i just picked up a 2013 Trek Cobia for 1k

on that note, where should i be looking for a new, shorter stem? i must be a t-rex as the handlebars are a loooong way forward.

Missus has been nagging me to go riding with her of late. So pulled the trigger on a new bike.

Ended up with a 2013 Giant XTC 29er 2 @1200 bucks seemed like pretty good value.

i discovered mine was 105mm, so was looking around the 40-60mm range. just a thought, but will a shorter stem cause any issues on a 29er?

I wouldn't be able to tell you, Maybe see if someone in Perth has one and can loan it and give it a go. 90mm was too long for me, and I was getting neck aches from the hanging over.

Would prefer a black one Chris, stuff like that sends my OCD nuts.

A quick read says a shorter stem on a 29er is a good thing. An excuse to order more shit from wiggle...

You can also try running your bars a bit narrower. Wider bars will pull you further forward.

Yup. Will try the stem before I cut anything though, I have pretty broad shoulders so 710mm bars are pretty good already.

I would say I do also, but have just gone back to my 670mm bars from 720mm and they do feel a little better (a shorter stem might have also netted the same result)

Need to play with the pressures a bit....was somewhere between 28-30psi last weekend, felt as if it was about to slip out on soft corners. Took a bad line into the beginning of Muffin Tops, turning back onto trail was not an option, decided that riding into a tree would end in less tears.

I jsut compared my 2.4 contis to my a pair of 2.25 Nobby Nics and they look pretty darn close. However being tubeless I've been running ~25psi of air. Tempted to try the front down around 22 and the rear on 30

wrecked a $700 rim this morning due to a cockhead driver who pulled out in front of me. Thankfully fork is ok. New helmet required but did not lose skin. Love riding on the roads!

Anyone use that Strava app? I just went for my first ride since Baby Jebus was a lad, and fuck I am unfit, but the app seems pretty accurate, and should be a pretty good way to gauge improvements. Hunting around now for other trails/rides on it.

As for the bike, seems I am in the same boat as Mitchy. Shorter stem and some riser bars required. Just couldn't get comfortable. Other than that, and the need to fine tune the gearing and get out more.

Shopping list so far... Risers, shorter stem, decent grips, better seat, decent set of pedals.

Try sliding the seat forward if you can. I was suffering a sore neck after raising my seat a bit...sliding the seat 10mm forward fixed that.

Think I have a cheap 'Token' branded stem somewhere, 50mm. Welcome to borrow and test if you like.

5GBP shipping and they do what you are chasing except the saddle.

Measure how wide your sit bones are by getting a piece of aluminim foil, put it on a carpeted stair, sit on it lean forwards into your riding position and then lift your feet off the ground.... then I can recommend a saddle that might suit you

As for strava - yeah I use it with my Garmin GPS, it's not THAT accurate on phones though.

both too short and too fat.

also, i'm chasing tyres to suit ~70% road, 30% trail. need to be 29" too. would i be right in assuming 29x2.0 rear and 29x2.2 front would be good?

current bontrager 29-2's are soft as shit and the rear constantly feels like it's flat. have ridden about 200km and they are almost gone.

Have moved the seat around and and any further forward feels awkward. Basically just feels like I am over stretched. Will however keep fiddling with things. Might take you up on the 50mm stem test at some point over the next couple weeks.

Cheers for the link! Have been looking at CRC etc, but any spending will have to wait till after shitmas.

What Garmin are you running? Have never delved into "mini" GPS unit before.
