depends if your pads are contaminated or not....how much meat is left on them?

I'd take the wheels off, wash the wheels and rotors with bike wash (or ct18), dry the rotors well with a clean rag, then wipe over with mediswabs and let dry.

Try running some wet-dry in between the pads to clean up any contamination and then wheels back in and "re-bed" the pads (sort of) .... ive heard of others wet/dry rotors if they are glazed too.

Complete new brakeset in April, but done 124kms of mainly off road with a little bit of on road since ( yay for trip meters).

I'll pull the pads out and have a look, see if i can clean them up a little with wet and dry, when i looked at them a couple of weeks ago they were still like brand new.

What are your thoughts on Haro's for the same entry level XC models?

Just rode a Haro Flightline at another shop, geometry felt nicer for me, rode beautifully. On special for just over $700, again not used for much more than commuting and trails, the odd jump. The Yukon was just under $1000, are they worth the extra would you think?

Also other than the Quokka, where would I be looking for a second hand bike?

    Cheers mate.

just man up and stop riding the brake like a chinese lady in a corrolla goin down greenmount hill.

on/off braking you'll go thru tyres a bit quicker tho haha but will be alot faster down the hill

Yeah on/off is generally what i do, but on muddy descents i always seem to grab the anchors, cause i know i'll go over.

It's great. Bear in mind it is a 2004 model and everything has been upgraded over the last few years with exception to the frame (Which I am still keen to upgrade). Geometry is very much XC orientated, though the 2009 model has been tweaked a bit allowing better stand over clearance and such like. S_E/Stuart actually has the 09 model - It seems to have held up to his abuse - I think every other bike he has had in the past never sees beyond 12months .

Now would be a good time to buy as the 2010 models come in and the 09's go out cheaper.

http://www.hucktoflat.com/htf/smf/ Would be another place to look for 2nd hand bikes.

Pads could be contaminated as some have suggested. You can pull the pads out and stick them over the stove - will burn out any oil etc that has seeped into them.

There is a bike-specific product out there that can clean/stop squealing. FYI: DO NOT use car-specific brake cleaning products.

Also try try running different compound pads- Organic, sintered/metallic, ceramic....Can't recall what is best for wet weather.

Be thankful you do not have Avid Juicy's - they are known to squeal like a mofo in the cold/wet.

These bikes able to hit the odd jump? Went out to Goat Farm today, had a great time. Easing my way onto the jumps again, didnt really trust the bike I was on though so took it easy.

Obviously a proper dirt jump bike would perform better, but I think Id be staying on the tight trails more than the jumps in the future, but its good to have the option.

    Cheers mate.

youu can boil the mineral fluid out of pads and reuse them, just bust them in a pot on the stove boil for a while and all the oil comes out and floats on the surface of water.

then you run water into the pot from the tap and the oil will overflow into drain and your pads r good to use again

    no problemo

works a treat, ive used it on both mtb and motorcycle pads

the temp of boiling water isnt an issue since pads see more then 100 deg on a big hill or high speed stop

dude told me to pedla as fast as i could, hit the skids hard but keep pedallling, get the pads real hot, then splash water on them.

my brakes were smokign like a chimney before i even got to the water stage hahaha. seemed to work for about a day and then went back to shit

Yeah there so many remedies i keep hearing about, but tried a few and couldn't get them better. Last time i took my bike upto Eric at Collie, and he fixed it in 15 mins.

But thats a little too far to drive just go get them done.

as a side note - I sort of did what ross said...

sanded my rotors with some 120 grit wet/dry (lightly)
sanded surface of pads (just to rough up and removed glazing/contaminate on surface)
put some aluminium foil on stove top (folded about 4 times on itself)
    cranked up the heat
put my pads backing side down (pad material face up)
left them for ~20mins ... until the stopped smoking...
    droppped em back in
    brakes are FUCKING UNBELIEVEABLE now
