shoulda said hello ... cant remem seeing any pink faces thou ..
ive only done 3 x mtb races ( dwelly 40 , dusk til dawn 12hr , and now karri cup ) but best practise for offroad is to do it.
get tyre design right .. ( dont stress about rolling resistance , traction is more important in my eyes ) i run specialized captains / purgartory combo. get pessures right ( 25-30 psi ) ,
check out this website .. some of it is basics but it all helps

    www.mtbtips.com

and yes mtb offroad kms is almost equal to double the kms as onroad .. i also think offroad double the fun !!! there was alot more single track in this event than everyone implied and i would of been happy to ride it all day ..

hope to see you at jarrahdale in 2 weeks

I ran a new wheelset (ZTR Crests on Hope Pro 2s) with Nobby Nic 2.25 front and 2.10 rear and didn't ever find myself struggling for grip, except for the really sandy corners and even then it was just dab a foot and control the slide, get back on the gas. 25psi front, 28psi rear.

Were you guys riding in packs much? I found that 3 of us together (in my team) smashed through stage 2 a lot quicker because we could draft each other, but I do think it hurt my legs.

I was so fvcking sick of eating gels by about 30 minutes into Stage 3, I think this was attributed to the fact I only had orange/mandarin ones as I saved my last espresso one for the end of stage 4. All up I think I consumed 9 gels, 5 enduralyte tablets, 1x bottle of High5 ZERO and lunch (sandwich, apple, anzac biscuit)

Definitely didn't drink enough water, the mrs forgot to pack the camelbak bladders so I managed to find some shitty Caribee one in pemberton that was only 1.5L...got back to accom 8pm night before race, fill it up and it had a pinhole leak (massive FML moment) managed to patch with duct tape but it still dripped a little. Stage 4 I grabbed my sisters bladder (she pulled out at lunch) from her camelbak and put 3L in it and smashed the whole lot 1km before the finish and felt a lot better. The sun/heat killed me, I had to pull the top half of my knicks down to stop feeling like I was overheating.

Karri Cup was hard! I managed 4th overall- not bad for an old roadie. Suffered last 10km though as i didn't stop at the end of the 3rd stage and ran out of water. Those climbs through the paddocks weren't fun.
I ran a Specialized Captain 2.0 on the front and Renegade 1.95 rear. Rear tyre doesn't give heaps of braking traction so slide around a bit but it rolls so much faster on the fire roads.

Yeah going to look at using a mixture of all 3 next time. I had my face and arms tingling at the end of stage 1 from consuming gels, enduralytes and High5 ZERO haha .. oops?

As for gel bogs, I haven't had any issues yet

farking, congrats! Great effort. I can only dream of being able to ride that fast! Although I suspect doing it on a 150mm AM built bike probably doesn't help my cause much haha.

yea massive congrates thats awesome result.. being a roadie shouldnt hold ya back . its an advantage really , esp when 80% was firetrails .

as for what to eat/drink .

    i couldnt stomache breaky . just an up"n"go ..
enduro magnesium powder / endura , in drink bottle , then topped with water at 1st stop , and 2x energy chews . at lunch only took 1 bite of sandwich and could hardly swallow it , piece of fruit, and 1 gel, topped up drink bottle with magnesium endura ,and 3 salt tablets and couple of barley sugars.
The last stop another gel , topped bottle with water , which ended up half poured over me as the return run throu the paddocks was hot !!! i just wanted to jump into those ponds/dams even if they looked dirty !

didnt get to run in packs i was only my own pretty much the whole day , but some ppl wer trying to slip stream me start of stage 3 , until i shook them off .

not sure how much diff bike makes but the stumpy isnt really light . 130mm 29r dually that is over 13kgs compared to all these 10kg hardtails or 100mm carbon dually's

i think with more kms and training there should be some improvements .. one thing i just cant shake is nerves i just cant eat on "raceday"
looking forward to the shorter xc style racers , with lots of single track or rocky tech stuff !

Don't forget what you eat in the day or 2 before is very important too for a long race like that.
I reckon i smashed 6 gels, a power bar type thing at the first stop and the roll and a banana at lunch.
Tried to eat some more powerbar in the last stage but managed to time it just as someone attacked so had to spit it and chase...

Whacko looking velodrome bike, probably from the late 80s or early 90s.

There were heaps of experimental designs done back then like that.

Heaps of funky things in this book I got a year or so, not sure why I got it, other than inspiration to restore a vintage roadie. Still cool to flick through.

From a purely aesthetic point of view I've always wanted a Trek Y Foil road bike from the late 90s. Although From what I've ready they unfortunately ride like shit.

Ran the last round of the SPR/RCCC crit series at tech park on Sunday (D grade).

Was really worried about racing in the rain and decided that it wasn't worth a crash so I sat in the car for about 10 minutes deciding if it was going to rain or not. Luckily for me it held off and it was actually completely dry the whole time.

Pace was harder right from the start compared to the previous round and the group split in 2. I managed to hold onto the front group and cross the line in 4th (out of maybe 10-12 starters).

Good times, keen for road racing season to start so I can give that a try!

Anyone doing the Giro D Perth thing on Sunday?

Figure it be full of fixies - heading with a mate with the Reign for a laugh

After seeing that blue geekhouse fixie every time I scroll down, I have come to the conclusion it reminds me of Homer Simpsons beer gut.

I know....got too much on Saturday unfortunately.

At least I have a new headset fitted, so it doesn't feel like I'm riding a jackhammer.

I got my forks from Merlin Cycles w/ free shipping within a week for under $400. Mind you, they were 2012 with straight 1, 1/8 steerer on clearance. OEM too - so no pretty RockShox box etc.

I just bought a Trek Remedy 9.9, 2010 model but only ridden 3 times. Still recovering from dislocated AC done at KC 3 months ago so havent ridden it yet.

Selling my 2012 Giant Reign 1 in about 3 weeks if anyone is interested, cheap. Will post up a for sale thread in two weeks.

Ive owned a remedy for 2 yrs now. I fairly thrash it, fucked that shitty fox shock of the rear and put a vivid air on. it made the bike so much better the ride. I Also own a 2011 trek session 88 that i have done 2 race seasons on. Trek make really good bikes, but if your break something be prepared to shit fight for warranty. I cracked my rear trainlge on my session and it took a month to get a new chainstay and it was the wrong colour.
