Given up on the idea of building a road bike, Took a look on VeloBuild group buys, even reputable carbon frames from China are $600+, Once you add everything else, I'm looking at a minimum of $2k.
Going to visit a few shops to try bikes for size then look around 2nd hand. Unlikely to find something with a carbon frame on my budget, but if I can get something semi-decent that I can swap over to a better frame or build up on in the future I'll be happy.

Well over in Queenstown NZ at the moment and did around a 40km ride yesterday on a new specialized stumpy, nice bike to ride but fuck me the hills here are crazy.
Supposed to be jumping in a helicopter tomorrow to the top of the remarkables and ride back down
Jealous.
Hey Marc - trails down south...I know there is the Marg River Pines, anything else. I know you said once you rode a few trails down that way.
I'm on leave week after next, have nothing better to do, so was thinking of heading down there for a night.
Yep lots more, pick up a copy of the trail book by Travis Deane... Tbe generally have a copy. Check out wambas site too.. Recommend secret witcher, pile Rd and jd's
Oh and boranup and meelup too, watch out for snakes
Where abouts have people been getting their frames painted/powder coated ? clean white like posted before by dmwill looks mint, better than my silver fading into black colour scheme
Winter White FG F6 335rwkw
I got mine done at R&L Powder Coating. Used to be in Osborne Park, but now in Wangara I think. Cost me $170 - process takes a bit longer with aluminium frames as they use a finer sand (or something along those lines), supposedly normal sandblasting can leave a pitted look on the frame.
I'd suggest factoring in upto $100 extra at a bike shop and getting them to face the headtube and bottom bracket, having a layer of paint on those parts of the frame will mean the bearings are not going to be sitting 100% parallel to each other. Bike show will point out anything else that needs to be done - facing disk brake mounts, derailleur hanger etc.
After deliberating over several sets of 165mm track cranks, I bit the bullet and grabbed a set of spanking new 170mm cranks (way more suited to my urban riding and enough leverage for climbing ) that should last me several years across lots of different builds.
Campagnolo Record Pista cranks and Record bottom bracket
(Don't mind the oil stains on the sprocket, the new ceramic lube I got is messy as fuck and the photo was taken pre wipe down.)
Running 48T front sprocket and 17T rear.
As with all 102mm Campy bottom brackets, the crank spider and sprocket end up sitting only a few mm from the frame, but I'm told these fuckers won't flex one little bit.
Matched up with my MKS track pedals and White Industries Eno flywheel, I now have an ultra smooth drivetrain.
Next stop is to get an Izumi chain, but this YBN is more than enough for now.
Any weight concious people in this thread?
Bought a set of Formula brakes which came with TI bolts that id rather sell and purchase parts i actually need (such as a seat)

have 12 in total - would want somewhere around chain reactions price but throw me offers
stolen from committed cycles cannington on the early hours of 18/1/13
broken shop window , walked past 6-7k s-works road bikes and stole my 2nd hand
2008 stumpjumper 29er.( sadly i didnt record the serial numbers ..i dare that the reason why theives targeted the 2nd hand bike )
please keep eye out . just like to see justice done. theft is worse then drug cheating the tour de france !
this is the pic of actual bike stolen
You can see why so many bike shops have ugly bars all over their windows now.
Total triathlon in vic park got knocked over the other week too, they stole a few high end time trial bikes.
this upsets me. i was going to do my hardtail matte white the instant it got it's first scratch...
what do you guys use in the way of pedals? i'm kind of hoping i can get someone with a cleat, but can also be used with normal shoes.
something like this, instead of the 1 side cleat/1 side flat like shimano offer.
Fuck cleats. Never ever got used to them. I always just bought the old bear traps and sharpened them up. My shins did not like me.
Fuck cars, I'm taking up scrapbooking.
Can't say I've ever seen a double sided pedal where the platform/flat side has decent grip.
Even with a flat shoe, you're going to feel the cleat there I'd imagine. The platform is just there for extra support. I use flats most the time with non-SPD Shimano DX shoes. On Sedate trails I run XT Trail SPDs with M162 shoes.
Only ever seen these from Shimano - more suited for road/commuting use:
Oh yeah, gloss white isn't too bad, get the odd scuffs/scratches, usually polish out with some car stuff
Yeah forget matte, it's a real pain in the arse!
You want something that can utilise automotive cleaning products.. Gloss is perfect for that.
I use spray wax on my bike to keep it in check.. Works a treat.
Do any of you guys know much about Reid Cycles? Aussie company. Seem pretty cheap. My brother is looking at this one;
http://www.reidcycles.com.au/bicycle...l#.UPpZ7-h74jE
just wondering if there are any alternatives he should consider in the same price bracket.
I buy stuff from them, they're reliable and cheap with their parts.
That being said, their bikes are all cheap Asian imports, same as the Cell ones. They serve a purpose but they're heavy and low spec.
That bike has the entry level Shimano group on it. What does your brother want to do with the bike?
just casual riding. he's doing around 25km a few nights a week on a mountain bike. one of his mate's has a road bike and my bro reckons he just outrides him without even trying. so he just wants to be able to keep up.
Anyone familiar with cycling specific sunnies...specifically the ones with RX prescription inserts? (where they insert behind the actual sunglass lenses and you have the ability to change the actual sunglass lenses with tinted or clear ones).
Looking at some of the things Adidas and Rudy Project offer. Regular prescription sunnies are not always good - too dark at times and sweat keeps dripping in my eyes.
My optometrist has nothing like this, so looking to get the glasses and plain inserts elsewhere, then getting the optometrist to take care of the rest.
