OK I'm having some problems whenever I use BitTorrent/Azureus.
After the program has been downloading files for a little while, my computer ends up stalling and I lose my internet connection. I then have to reboot to be able to use the computer normally.
Anyone have any idea why this could be happening?
I have just reformatted, and I'm using Optus cable. Nobody else seems to have a problem using this thing.

off the top of my head a few settings for every BT client to check are:
port range - standard is 6881 - 8000ish, make sure if you are running a firewall that this range is allowed through your firewall both incoming and outgoing..
Min number of peers - dont set this too high as it will result in drawing a large percentage, if not all, of your system resources... not to mention bandwidth..set between 0-50
Disk allocation rate - set this too high and your computer will not be able to keep up with your download and it may idle/stall your download.
for a normal computer around 1-2MiB/s is standard
Max number of peers - some cheaper network cards cannot handle a large amount of ports being used at any one time and will often freeze, if you have problems set this to 60 or less..
Max files open - if set too high problems can arise with data checking and file locking.. if you have set this number higher, make sure file locking is turned on... also try lowering this option if you continue to have problems... normal = 50-100
And of course the common things to try if all of this fails..
#1 Check your upload speed.. most home connections are limited in that the faster you upload, the slower you download at an exponential rate. if you are maxing out your upload rate, your download will be next to nothing which includes web pages/irc/etc, so your connection might not be freezing, it might just be maxed out.
#2 try another BT client... most if not all of the BT clients out there are freeware and sometimes poorly coded, chances are some bug maybe responsible.
#3 if you are using a network card to access the internet (LAN/DSL/router etc) make sure windows is not powering down the network device to save power when you arent using the computer. (Find this in control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager -> network adapters -> adapteryouhaveinstalled -> properties)
#4 Turn the windows firewall OFF, you will notice a big change in speed... its better to configure the firewall more to allow these ports, so if you are willing to go the extra mile.. read up on it
Anyway theres a few things to keep you busy, please note change these settings at your own risk.. most importantly write down the values u had before you change them so if you mess up you can change it back..
this is a fairly limited/brief overview, if you still have probs drop us a line...
Cheers

I ended up updating the network card driver. Then the computer would reboot whenever a download completed.
My problems are now solved thanks to a new $7 network card.
