id say dont go a minispool unless ur just using it for plex..driving with one on the street is a pain in the arse and unless its 28 spline you'll be saying goodbye to afew axles..lsd centre is alot better but will prob cost alot more and id suggest getting it rebiult seeing how u want it tight as possible

Skyline diffs are 28 spline from factory

go the spool, the BW78 LSDs are expensive for what they are...weak

minispool pay 150 max, lsd for an r31 will b anything stupid from 400 up. and being at least 15 years old it will probably be shagged, so it'll need a rebuild, and as they r weak, it wont be long til another rebuilkd, and another, and another, and these are a few hundred each as well. many people put spools in r31's and love them, go for it :D

The actual diff isnt weak , only the gay ass cone type clutch that engages the LSD is.

Yeah Spool on the Borg Warner ;)

Rebuild my LSD, $450 and within a few weeks (admittedly that included a drift and Track day) it was pretty much back to a single spinner......

Spool cost $150, and with PS actually was'nt that bad to drive on the street ;)

$150 ? i seen em on ebay for $80..

spools arent the best for your susp either..but if u wanna go cheap, do it

can u adapt a r200 long diff out of a hr31 coupe or maybe the whole rear end?
there usually around the 600 mark and there a clutch type lsd alot better and constant plus there near on unbreakable...

someone on here would know how to fit it..they arent hard, not something ud want to be doing often though, have u ever driven a car with a spool in it ?

and the looks of noobs and cops in carparks wondering why your tyres are chirping everytime you make a turn.

yeh the sounds pretty shocking when u make slow tight turns, groans and clunking coming from the diff and the susp..and if a cop hears u..yellow lickie straight away

yeah ive heard all the cons but there still alot cheaper than an lsd and ive heard lsd can be dangerous if there not woung up tight enough cas they kick wen ur halfway through a corner

MMM
26-02-2006, 07:49 PM
yeah they kick like without warning its sooo dangerous..noob

Drift_R32

they are cheap..but if u want to be changing your susp bushes and slowly rooting up your susp then go ahead

mate wait till u drive with a spool in the wet.. its always locked so if u turn a corner with acceleration or accelerate while mid turn even say in 3rd gear, and if u have an auto best be careful cuase it could kick back a gear and throw the back end way out..my cortina is running a mini spool with a 250xflow with 350holley and extractors and that thing is just plain scary in the wet..

look im just giving my opinion on minispools..if u really set on it, then go ahead aye

****ing broken single spinner viscous LSD is scarier in the wet than a locker...at least the locker is predictable

Dood, thats not the Spool.....Cortinas are scary handlers all on there own ;)
(Especially with that big Crossflow hanging over the front axle!)

At the end of the day you have to ask yourself what you want the spool for and then balance that against the Cons.

Spools in R31s ar'nt to bad, Powersteering overcomes steering load up issues, yes they do chirp on tight turns such as into a parking bay, yes they do put extra load on certain susupension components as well as wheel studs etc

And in an NA R31 I probably wouldnt go to the hassle as pros wouldnt outweigh the cons, but if you have traction issues ie Boost! then spool is the way to go on Borg Warner equiped R31 as LSD's just do not last.

My Spool equipped 31 did not understeer at all wet or dry (Dial in some Camber ;))

And contary to what has been written offer probably 'the' most predictable way of putting power down each time every time ;)

i had a spool in my 31 for a while (took it out to get a yellow off, havent put it in cause ive since killed the clutch)

installed it myself in the driveway, wasnt overly difficult, and was well worth it

i can't wait to put it back in :D

I'm thinking of putting a minispool into a vl with an RB20det rather than converting it to lsd, at least in the short term. It has 15" wheels and slides everywhere in the wet anyway. I've heard differing opinions as to wether this is a good idea or not. Why are they such a pain to drive with exactly? Being a commodore the steering groans naturally and it seems a nicer (cheaper) idea than changing the axles and diff. Any advice?

it can be bad because when you're turning tight corners (without spinning the wheels) its putting alot of load on the inside axel as both the wheels are trying to do the same amount of rotations. that is also why they can be a pain in the ass to drive, especially trying to park.

the hemi rolla had a welded diff in it
and i never had any trouble parking that
was super predictable and fun as all hell (265 hemi + ke10 rolla+ locked diff= FUN)

do i dare say 9 inch.

Can you get one of those kaaz centres for those at all?

evilvl

Whats the advantage of fitting a 9 inch?

Incidently this is the response I got from a diff place, for anyone else searching this info..

We can supply a 25 spline minispool to suit your VL Commodore, which would be $175. As they are illegal to use on public roads, you would need to fit it yourself, however fitting a minispool to 25 spline axles will stress the axles to breakage. We would recommend an upgrade to 28 spline axles and a 4 pin or KAAZ LSD, which would be between $1750 to $2800 depending on your choice of LSD. Give us a call if you want to discuss the options. If you decide to do this, we need one week's notice to fit you in and one full day to fit it.

Nah i wouldnt fit a 9 inch either, heavy as.So you can get a kaaz centre for the bw,that would be the shiz!!

I dove a minispooled R31 as a weekend car for nearly 3years without breaking an axle (28spline), I dont regret it at all, theres simply no other viable option for reliable performance out of the BW diffs without spending around $2k on a kaaz centre, and basicly, if you drive an R31 it means ur on a budget, and $2000 versus $80, its pretty obvious the spool is the winner.

Having said that it eventually drove me insane to the point of buying an import r31 with a nice lsd, and I wont ever have a spooled car again :) Do it, be hard, chuck skids.
