hey guys.. just wondering what you think would be the best method of running in an engine?

i'm going to have to do this soon, and i wanna do it the "right" way...

i've been told before to lug the car around... shift early, make the engine work...

but then i've also heard that you are supposed to do the opposite.. don't let the engine struggle...

what methods do you fellas (and gals) find works the best for a nice strong engine in the future?

oh.. btw... the engine in question is a 4G62 turbo...

cheers ppl

always use non-friction modified mineral oil.
One of the first things to do is knock the high spots off bearings which is done by turning the engine over a couple of times
but the main part that needs running-in is the piston rings. basically low tension rings like load,(eg uphill in tallish gears) dont rev the engine too much but keep it at peak torque when loaded.
hi revs without load will damage them (this is called 'flutter',and it will damage their sealing surface.) Vary the loads and increase them as the running in procedure comes to an end.(usually around 1500km to 2500km)
high tension rings use an opposite procedure.
try not to use an brand new(not tuned) ecu as not having the correct a/f ratio - ie. if too rich, some fuel will run down the bores which will cause it to run without load for longer than it should. if u have to use the new management comp. make sure the base mapping is as close as possible
make sure u know if the engine has high or low tension rings and listen to the engine builders recommendation...

make sure you vary the revs and engine load for highway driving. don't sit at the same speed/revs/load. change oil after first 1000km driving, then again at another 1000km after that if you like. then you can do oil change at every 5000km as normal.

yep just ran in mine and thats pretty much how we did it. Take it down south make a holiday out of it. We put the mineral oil in it for about 250km then changed it to a semi synthetic .... then after the 1000 put the normal synthetic in.

just sit it on the limiter as soon as u crank it:>
