Fellow antilagers,

Is someone able to point me in the right direction on macbooks. I know absolutely nothing about apple products but my little bro is in need of a MacBook, he does alot of stuff to do with music etc and I've been promising him for months I would get him a Mac to run garageband.

I've got about 400/500 max to spend and gumtree has brought up a couple. A 2008 and a 2010.. but these seem to be core 2 duos? Are Mac's just incredibly efficient or am I right in assuming it's gonna be a pile of shit ?

Not keen on wasting money / disappointing him so any advice would be greatly appreciated

Stretch for a 2011 model at the very least. The ones with i5/i7.

I got mine with a wrecked battery for cheap and bought a new refurb battery, SSD and RAM upgrade for it and performs like a champ.

I just had a quick look on FB Marketplace. There's a couple of them in your price range that's Core i5/i7. Just that most of them are 13", will probably need to stretch to 700 for 15" ones.

Stopped fucking about yesterday, ended up with 3 of 3 different people for a grand total of less than what I thought I was gonna pay for one lol

the laughing stopped when for the first time in my life I sat down and tried to operate a mac, steep learning curve when 2 of them just had a box with a fucking question mark? like wtf is that supposed to mean? I was waiting for the Riddler to pop up and start rhyming at me. I actually feared for my parents safety at one point.

couple of SSD's i had lying around later and some brain hurt and ive ended up with a 2008 - "unibody" aluminium, a 2011 i5 and a 2012 i5 pro. I even splurged and tethered my phone to get high sierra and bandcamp downloaded in time for the little fucker to take to tafe today.
