In-Laws currently have a Maxidas-DS708 diagnostic tool (http://www.autel.com.au/products/diagnostic-analysis-system/maxidas-ds708/)
I went to download updates last night for them and it seems its no longer supported through the official update process.
Now looking to get him a new scan tool - want to know if anyone has recomendations? What are you using and whats good?
Thanks in advance!

if it's a standard OBD2 device you're after eBay is full of cheap and cheerful options.
I use the ELM427 or whatever it's called, bluetooth to phone using Torque App (android) - have used it successfully on Fords, Toyotas and Mazdas - you can try mine on the Merc and see if it works for you if you want?

thanks Shifted. He runs a panel shop so not sure how keen he will be on ebay alternatives unless they are proven. i have a blutooth dongle, might take it to him and see what he thinks.
that rig i posted is like a swiss army knife of interfaces...many different heads to accommodate older/different inputs. ill have to ask him how many times he has needed anything other than OBDii

Launch products I find really good. Anything from clearing ABS to Steering wheel position. Lots of budget options.

I have one launch product that actuates every module in my M5. It's one of the entry level ones and the snap on on top of the range one doesn't..

this one looks like its getting a guernsy - thanks for the lead on Launch products!
We recently got a G-scan2 at work. Initial impressions are pretty good. Seams to do jap, aus, euro, korean, yank cars very well. With good support for jap trucks. What lets it down is support for euro trucks.
