View Full Version : Reality of donating to charities

If you get bailed up by those guys in the streets/shops, don't.
If you want to donate, do it direct.
Or research a charity that actually uses it's money right.

62 cents in every dollar you donate to surf life savings is paying for something else.
Or only donate to the "Bram Wants A Fast Car Fund". Garanteed %100 of all proceeds raised go directly into making my car faster.

Can't remember the details exactly but one example on that show last night the company raised ~12mil and ~480k made it to the charity in the end. It's fucked.

These crowds are fucking it up for the charities who do the right thing too.
My mum helps out with one of the breast cancer crowds once a year after the support she got from them a few years back.
Usually mans a stall at the local shop selling BCNA merch (badges, pens, all that sort of stuff). So many people walk past assuming they're going to be signed up to some kind of payment plan, they're usually surprised when they find out they can just drop a coin in the tin or buy something without handing over their details.
Over the years, the amount mum makes at the end of the day is slowly decreasing. First year she did it was a tad over $1k. Last year was about $300.

Fkn mugs. Timely reminder as a young guy threw out the "hey mate, can I ask you one question" today as I walked past the Guide Dog's stall in the shopping centre.
They should have to disclose that they are a contractor - not a volunteer of the charity itself. As mentioned above, it destroys the reputation of said charity.

Surprised Fred Hollows Foundation isn't on there...I got bailed up by some top-knot having charity contractor at Terminal 2 the other day.
It's bad enough coping it up the local shops, now you cop it when you're catching a plane
Fred Hollows was specifically mentioned on the show.
Good on diabetes aus for only using 2% for costs.

Donated to a few of those in my time
Nowdays... not so many
RFDS and Smith family are my norms.
Shitty that so many high profile ones are bloated with cost... and of course CEO high wages

Was donating to national breast cancer foundation by direct debit but cancelled today after finding out they have a lot to do with appco.

I've just had a guy rock up at my garage fundraising for the greens to save the Great Barrier Reef. I was pretty busy and politely said I'm in the middle of something and that I'm not interested. Kids playing inside and he goes "you've got kids and probably donate towards kids foundations and this is something the same as we need to save the Great Barrier Reef, it's as important as anyone like kids because we want it to last" He walked closer to the car and went on about signing me up on the iPad or whatever he had and it'll come as a instalment.
I was changing the brake fluid on the car and left a bottle of the old shit without the lid resting on the rad support, unintentionally Ofcourse. I lowered the back down and the bottle fell splashing his brown jeans and shoes.
I threw him some clean rags and he started wiping the old fluid off and continued on.
I know they are there to do a job and I've got nothing against them but a whole lot of them are dodgy fundraising firms and I hate to donate without seeing where our money goes to.
Should of listened when I said I was busy and walked off. Time for new shoes and jeans now :-/

I notice the first thing they do is ask for your name and starting punching it into the iPad (along with your address) before they explain what is happening.
Worries me that they probably prey on older people as well.

I am going to chuck a laminate of TJs posted jpg above in my wallet.... then I can reach for wallet as if I am interested , say something like , "I am just seeing where you are on my list"... then "oh, sorry too much of your money goes to admin rather than supporting the cause!"

Yep, been a long time since i have even considered stopping for any of these type of bullshit fund raisers. Happy to buy a poppy or novelty item etc, but sign up for only $5 etc etc can get fucked. They are counting on people being to busy to notice, (which they are) and the money keeps rolling everymonth.
Think it was probably 15-20 years ago i was wondering, what has World Vision done in solving the issues that keep producing massive famines in africa and around the world. Obviously they arent in the business of solving 3rd world and political issues, but fuck me $270 million i think list was that AUSTRALIA Division produced last year, i remember doing the 40 hour famine etc in primary school mid 80's. If they havent had massive influence and prevented millions of deaths from that money and come up with sure fire methods for overcoming famines in the first place, then they should all be fucking fired.
$40 mill in expenses for a year, thats a biiig business. And i cant say i have noticed or run into world vision for a long time, if Diabetes Aus can operate on 2% cost, fuck im sure you can do an awesome job at 10%?

Cant even fuel ya fucking car up these days without being hit up by the clowns.
So a car forum which commonly abuses sensationalist media for using half truths, is believing the media?
This comes up every couple of years and although some are actually bad, as per the article, others are legitimate.
https://sls.com.au/surf-life-saving-foundation-discusses-fundraising/
End of the day, if the charity has higher cost but brings in a higher net dollar figure... isn't it still a win?

Except that statement is from 2011, and the numbers are 2015 - likely they have signed up with appco since - as per this article from 2016

I donate generously to local based charity and that is the extent of it.
What does shit me is the lack if thanks.
For instance I recently donated a shitload to a local car show for a childrens charity with zero thanks in return.
People wonder why we hesitate.
I don't want a trophy or any wank but a simple thank you goes a long way

Whole purpose of donating is it is selfless, receiving a thank you or not shouldn't make a difference if you believe in the cause and genuinely want to donate to the cause.
I donate anonymously to causes, because I don't want to receive a thank you for it, it's a gift.

Don't donate ever. full stop.
Might buy raffle tickets every now and then, that is about as far as my charity extends to.
Good thing about living out in whoop whoop. no door knockers. we don't normally even answer the home phone. just let it ring out.

On the flip side, you should not just take without a thanks. Common manners.

They can sell the things they don't need.

I understand but I don't think they can sell the things.
This all went to downhill for me when they started to insist on monthly installment, direct debits, I was also told to not worry if I couldn't afford it one month and to just call them and let them know I'll make up the balance in the following month.....
Didn't end well.

Maybe they could sign up to a forum and make 50 random posts so they could sell their stuff?
