View Full Version : AFL 2017 - NO DAN

Season starts next week, thought there would have been a thread earlier.
Can the Crows mids back up their elite forward line to challenge for the flag?
Will the Lions surprise a few teams?
Will the Blues shock everyone by finishing 17th or higher?
How long until the Magpies sack Buckley?
Will the injection of the returning stars mean Essendon compete better for longer?
Will sniffles Bennell actually play a game of the football?
Any chance of Dangerfield carrying the team for 2 years in a row to go one or two better?
Will the Suns finally crack the top 8?
Can anyone stop the AFL love child?
Is this the year the Hawks finally slide?
After years of rabble, will Melbourne challenge for finals?
Will anyone care about Norf?
Can Port rediscover their form or is Hinkley a dead man walking?
Will Richmond be able to focus on the game or the media?
Can the Saints keep their end of 2016 form going into this season?
Will Sydney bounce back from disappointment & finish top 4 yet again?
Will West Coast's usual home dominance & recruit of Mitchell be enough to get one last crack, or will the window shut?
Will the Bulldogs go bark to bark?
Predictions:
Premiers - Sydney
Runner-up - GWS
Smokey - Adelaide
Wooden Spoon - Carlton
Brownlow - Bontempelli
Coleman - Franklin
Biggest improver - Gold Coast
Biggest slider - #lolnorf
First coach sacked - Hardwick

Crows will choke again this year
I don't see Lions surprising anyone
Blues will do ok I think, nothing special
Buckley gone at the end of the year when they don't make finals (most tip him not to even make that, but I think he is too much of a fav in Collingwood to be cut halfway through)
Essendon I think will tilt towards final, but just not make it.
lolBennell
Dangerfield is a freak, so I think he and Selwood can carry that team again.
Suns just make finals but who knows. I think 7th and 8th will be fought over for a good few rounds.
No
Yes
lolNorth
Port is the child of the family that you think has a disability but can't figure out for sure.
Richmond to choke again
Saints the team to watch this year in my books
Yes as long as Franklin keeps firing
I see another crack from WCE, but it will only last another season or two before rebuild
Yes
I think GWS will take it out this year and they know it's their time to shine considering their roster.

heading over the Melbourne Friday to the GP so also taking advantage of round 1. Heading to the Friday night game at the G. Dogs vs Pies. Going to be huge! Round 1 with the reigning premiers vs the the most hated but most followed club in the AFL. will be 70,000 plus, atmosphere will be great!
Are there any good streams for this season??

Foxtel coverage for sport is mint and not just AFL but all other sports..
But i love getting my winter sports fix too like live down hill skiing/ski jumping/etc.
If Foxtel could do a sports only package or have an ala carte menu where you can select channels rather than being forced to have all the base channels (which I have little interest in other than lifestyle channel.. gimme date bargain hunt!) it would probably net them more customers.

I agree, I would totally do a Sports Package - however as it also has to come with base channels - for a fee - then I'm not interested.

I bet no one saw GWS on the bottom of the ladder after round 1.. Adelaide made a meal of them.
A few "upset" results, but it's great for the competition.
I don't think Petrie will play another game for West Coast, by the time he is recovered Lycett should be also good to go. Giles, Vardy, Lycett.

I keep thinking that about the Eagles getting the rub of the green at home games but after 20 odd years, that probably won't stop. Bulldogs are just better disciplined & considering we always have the ball & use it more than the opposition, it's not surprising. Last night was just over umpires, nearly 50 free kicks in one game is stupid

Eagles where Farcical for 3/4s too. Little to no pressure, poor execution of skills and MANY brain fades. Saints came to play, and we clearly did not, and we did not cope well with the Saints pressure and man on man defence.
Backline has some work to do, we're leaking too many scores and our kick-ins are woeful. Saints could have sealed it at 1/2 time if they kicked straight.
The 2 Adelaide teams look really good - lets see if they can keep it up.

I was genuinely surprised Freo managed to hold onto the win after the surge in the 3rd and 4th by the Dogs. Some classic Freo Shocker's moments - poor kicking accuracy (usually way short of the player), kicking to 2 on 1's, handballing the pill to a player who was hot.
That said, there were certainly impressive spurts. If only they could string them together.

Last year you lost a total of 5 games. Distinct possibility that you are going to be 0-4. So you reckon you can run 17-1 for the rest of the season? Remembering west coast were 6th last year with 16 wins, so you need 17 to make the 4.

Take a look at Sydneys ins and outs over the last 3 weeks. Tells the story.
Against Collingwood they had 6 players with 3 or less games experience. Another with 10 and add Sinclair who is a spud. Still won 3 quarters of football.
No need for panic stations yet. Good chance they'll go 0-5 but that doesn't mean bottom half of the 8 isn't doable.
Worth noting Bulldogs lose when the umps start calling them for throws.

Im an eagles fan and at the moment im tipping the hawks (may change it). It will be typical eagles to rock up and play all derp and lose another away game (specially one against the hawks at the G) in a game the probably should win to justify themselves as contenders. They will find some way to fuck it up like they did against Richmond and a bucket ton of other away games.
I hope I do end up eating those words but

Injury curse still hanging around from last season, hoping to be sitting at least 6-4 heading into the bye which is when the majority of our big outs will likely be back. Hawks aren't sliding, they have just crashed. I tipped them just sneaking into finals but I doubt they will even make it. Sydney will still bounce back, it's a marathon & not a sprint but try telling that to the April premiers Richmond...
Any Crows fans here? I picked them for top 4 but right now they are looking good for top 2, if they get that they have a great chance of winning it all. Adelaide Oval is a fortress again for them, if they keep getting kissed on the dick with injuries I'd be more worried about them than GWS

Unless there's some serious form change the crows and cats as top 2 would be a pretty safe bet, nobody else has been super convincing, tigers won't even make the top four, they'll slide like they do every year.
Eagles have some serious mental issues with the G, even playing as they are they should easily account for the hawks, at pretty much any other ground...They've got the personell, just need some consistency and to kick straight, getting over these sloppy games, not nice to watch!

Jury still out on Cats on whether they are or aren't the real deal (top 4)
R1 beat Freo by 42pts - lets face it Freo were easy beats
R2 beat Nrth by 1pt - losing all game then came through at the very end. Kicked 5 of the last 6 goals to get the chocolates
R3 beat Melb by 29pts - pretty even until cats kicked 8 of the last 9 goals
R4 beat Haw by 900odd pts - Hawks were an embarrassment
Good teams find a way to win and Geelong are doing this at the moment. I just dont think they have been as convincing as the Adelaide / GWS wins.

As I said above, I was right, they found a way to fuck up a game that should of been easily winnable, how can you play so well at home and just be so shit away, especially with games at MCG and also hawthorn, they were thumped by gold coast!!
there is some serious mental issues here I think and also there are some players who just cant cut it, the premiership window I think is gone with this group, invest in some of the young talent get them experience early!
rid the passengers, the ones who can play well at home when the team is playing well but don't lift the team up on the road games and just fuck it all up. Players like josh hill, redden, jetta, darling, wellingham, cripps, masten hutchings, le cras, schofield (thinks its time to try McKenzie again) and so on.
Whats going on with barrass, all his talent must of been in his hair soon as he snipped it at the end of last year his gone to shit. That play when the ball was rolling towards the hawthorn goal line and he had the attempts to knock it over and missed 3 times in a row for the hawks player to run in and soccer it through for a goal was embarrassing. Masten made a lot of fuck up too, literally in one passage it was like h was playing for hawthorn, turned it over in the middle with a shit kick followed it into the hawks forward line then just gave away a free kick on a sloppy tackle resulting In a goal, its just so frustrating to watch.
You could see it in Gaff at half time he was pissed off, he put it very simple and was correct their fumbles and skill errors were costing the, and its true. He had every right to be pissed he is one of the few week in and week out who keeps us going. Mitchell and natanui aren't going to save us.

Would of been good for both sides to go in without this weeks injuries and see were we're at. Hill has been our best midfielder this year so far IMO and obviously Cripps, Nelson are big outs for you turds. (Mitchell too but from last week or whenever.)
Hopefully a good game.

Yeah bombed shit out out of my multi....
And Boyd is 21 - he's had 3 years as an AFL player. To put that in context for you, Kennedy debuted in 2006 but wasn't a consistent productive forward until around 2013 @ 24/25 years of age. As a long term investment the Dogs have got a bargain if he delivers on his potential.

According to stats it was his 2nd season at the Eagles (2009 2 goals a game average)/4th season in the AFL that he started kicking bags, he wasn't on a mil either. While he is on a mil and producing 9 disposal 0 mark games people will comment much like Nic Nat is in the firing line when he has a stinker, except Boyd's are consistent stinkers
So Boyd's 4th year next year he should start improving? I'll happily eat my words then. It could also be the case of his is at the wrong club with the wrong game style being pushed as many guns have become jewels when changing clubs

He kicked 31 goals in 2009 - hardly awesome.
He was a good 6 seasons or more before he was a consistent forward.
And Nic Nat is a good example. He was sheltered early and was great for a quarter then went missing for the other 3. He's actually pretty old now in AFL terms, pretty sure he's 27 or 28 so look how long it's taken him to become consistent! Big guys just take longer.....

Eagles or the opposition they played have not come up at all on Footy classified over the last 3 weeks, I would bet good money that Lloyd will bring up the Eagles and how bad they are tonight.
Though I would love to see some young blood get thrown in, too many players ball watching and don't want to get in there and win the hard ball.
In my eyes Lecras needs to go, Hill needs to lift and stop playing like a tall forward and Darling needs to grow some balls and use his big body. Also let Jetta go at years end, the guy is a fucking potato and has zero appetite.

It is a bit like flogging the dead horse over the Bombers. It has been dealt with, punishments completed yet you still mention it every week.
Build a bridge and get over it.......... +1... came here to say same ...
someone do a word count ref to bombers as drug cheats etc etc would far outweigh ref to eagles .. same with COLA or what ever as i am sure that has been done to death too...

Thoughts on this? Probably a good thing. Can see them going a bit overboard in the first few weeks though and pinging people for soft things. Obvious punches shouldn't be part of the game these days, regardless of having a piece of jumper or not.

The melbourne v north games was one of the better games I've seen for a while, it wasn't just because it was a pretty close game with momentum swing between both teams but I was glued to it due to the emotion between the two teams, nothing like a bit of spite to get you sitting up in your seat.
To lose a Brownlow due to a bit of argy bargy would be a disgrace, especially if you've got the Footy player equivalent of fuckhead DanWA in your face, a good gut punch would bring the crowd to its feet. They should up the fine, $1000 isn't going to make anyone think twice.

I'm with ya on this one. Hate to see any jumper punch be a suspension. I think a decent force should be required before you miss a week. Fans love that shit too.

Agree there meeds to be "sufficient force" to see players sit games out. Getting away with a $1000 fine punching someone fairly solidly in the jaw because you had a handful of jumper while players sit out for accidental headclashes etc seemed pretty crazy though.
Need to find a middle ground somewhere. AFLs specialty

I think a much bigger fine could be a deterrent, but they need to run on a case by case basis.
Whoever hit Bernie Vince on the weekend didn't deserve a suspension if the rules changed, I thought it was a bit weak he acted like he was shot in the guts. The equivalent of Cotchin on Neale should be a week, that was dirty & got him good.
I love a bit of the rough stuff, but tummy taps are generally fuck all. But go for the head with a jumper punch though, it's not a good look for kids watching so if you see it too much it will only result in thugs growing up playing the game. You see some of the old shit, like biffs, bumps & brawls & im surprised there was no one punch deaths involved!

Yea read a bit of that, even at this age some of those drills are pretty full on. Hard enough to get them to stand in a line.

Make all the parents that sit there and think its ok to sip coffee on the sidelines help, even if you have to embarrass them to get off their arse.
Half think it's a childminding service. It takes no knowledge of the game to help keep the kids entertained but there will be plenty that just want to sit back, all the way from auskick to grade 7 where my eldest is at now, its been the same 7 odd parents doing everything for the 20 odd kids and it still shits me.

This! The parents should help out as much as possible, my girls group has about 5-6 of us that help out, I was even paired up with a random kid doing a handball drill and we kicked butt haha, he loved it. It's good fun!

When the midfield is playing like that, does not matter if Kennedy is playing or not.
50,000 fucking hand balls only to turn it over with the next one isn't going to win games.
I'm really questioning if Simpson can actually modify whatever game plan on the fly, because to me after the first bounce he only becomes a spectator.

Fuck I hate 50% of my fellow West Coast fans, so fucking delusional about where we at.
Some are in favour of players no matter how shit they are playing and should never be dropped and the others think the team is above criticism and we should all wrap the players in blankets so they don't hear bad words.
We are talking about grown ass fucking men who get paid to play sport, not 10 year olds with terminal cancer.

Really frustrating the number of handballs, They use a couple to get it clear of congestion, that's great, but then they'll throw another one or two out there and soo many times turned the fucking thing over!
Was good to see Jetta play with a bit of heart, hopefully some more games he'll gain some confidence to take the game on a bit, also impressed with Nelson's game, few mistakes including getting caught with the ball but moves good and made some good decisions.
We won't get anywhere until they sort the clearances issue, They can't just rely on Nat to come back to drop the ball down their throats, they need to find another avenue to win some clearances, if it wasn't for the quality of our back half this year we'd be sitting very low on the ladder!

He hasn't shown he change on the fly, I can't even remember when the Eagles have come back from a deficit. Literally we start winning or we lose...
I also hate the one step handball, it inevitably ends up in a turnover that lets the other team score. What happened to taking a few steps and finding a target and hitting them? Mitchell and Shuey are good with the ball displosal but Priddis, Gaff, Masten etc just deliver hospital passes constantly when in close
Goes to show how good Kennedy is.
Imagine the cluster fuck it would be to time a lead to a midfield that loves to crank up the stats with unnecessary handballs.

Who the hell was the player that turned the ball over in the centre square, with a cheeky "over-the-top of the opposition's head" handball, that ended with a GWS goal? Should be sided for 2-3 weeks for that effort.
