View Full Version : Finding a cheap nugget/but capable 4by?

Want to pickup a cheap 4by for some random weekends on the beach.
Budget is ~$2k, so yep it's probably going to be a nugget.

Auto preferred. Cruise control would be nice.

Have seen some pathfinders and challengers that fit the bill.
I hear the challengers are quite capable offroad, not entirely sure about the pathfinders.

Been scouring scumtree and lowballing some chumps who need cash, but not afraid to wait for a good example.

Any other makes/models I'm missing?
Any to avoid?

My old R51 pathy went anywhere my mates GU's went anytime we went out. I'll see if my brother wants to sell it.

Hyundai Terracans can be had pretty cheap, I know its a Hyundai but quite a few with a lot of kms on them, just saw one at Byford shops with a piece of paper in the window for sale for 1800.

Agree with Crabman, plenty of LWB Vitaras with G16Bs ( 16v EFI ) been going for under 2k. Plenty powerful for beach, usually come with a lift and slightly bigger tyres.

Thanks guys!

So Pathfinders are now higher on the list :)

Will take a look for some vitara's too... hadn't thought of them before.

Offroad capable Terracan? Do I need to get over the badge to realise they're a good 4wd?

i just recently picked up a bargain(which i thought) from sumtree, 80 series Landcruiser with 200k on the clock for 4k, Auto very good condition, has all the bells and whistles and power everything, even cruise control.

i originally only wanted to spend 2k max cause i just wanted a bunky but if you look around there is some good bargains to be had.

in saying all this my mate just picked up a X Trail for 2k from the auctions, seems to go well on the beach and can handle some dune smashing,

1998 onwards Jeep Cherokee.
I've never been overly polite to mine, easy to spanner on, parts are everywhere.
Cabin space is limited if you're over 6'3, otherwise I love mine and wouldn't change it for anything other than a TD42 Pooey

I've been doing the same research dude, looking to replace the daily with a cheap forby soon, an r51 is probably out of my price range, Cherokee's were canned for their old design and being american, but i think apart from possible heating issues, which any unmaintained cooling system will have, they're proven to be a solid unit in aussie conditions, and all the aftermarket support in the world!
I'd still be taking the kids etc out with me so as much as i've always wanted a Suzi i think it'd just be too small for me.
I'd love another GQ, they're such solid forbies but mine would also be my daily driver so the fuel use would kill me.

Suzuki Grand Vitara will be the next daily for me and my missus. A lot of people laugh them off for being a soft roader but they're actually a really capable 4WD with a proper low range and don't cost a heap on city duties.

Thread hijack.

6k budget and ute. Dual cab/single cab/extra cab all ok.

Recommendations?

D22 Nav or Triton, the zd30s in those Nav's didn't have the same issues as the Patrols, or you'd get an older hilux for that money, but their standard engines are gutless.

I'd certainly give the Triton a run.

The 3L V6's are tough as nails. My old man's on his second, and has shown no signs of stopping at 240,000kms, that's with lugging around a 1.4t excavator on a regular basis too.

There is a D22 V6 on Gumtree as we speak for about 7k I think it was, with some goodies.

Being in karratha makes buying a 6k car in perth a head fuck as you need to inspect it in person. I will keep an eye on what pops up locally until next holiday in perth.

Had a 6cyl mid 90's triton, was unkillable

Swapped it for a VS Clubby and the young bloke is still flogging the ass out of the Triton, just thirsty on the juice

You would get a pretty nice one for 6k

Surely you have a 'mate' that lives down here that is car savvy enough to inspect something for you ?

You obviously don't know me.

Thanks Brett but I'd rather do that drive myself if I purchased in perth and tbh with the pety it would be borderline as to trucking it being a cheaper option.

No worries, thought I'd throw the offer out there.
Having had a VG33 powered car, the best I got on average was 15l/100. No idea on the tank size of the Ute, but the wagon only had a small one, you'd need jerry cans or a light foot :)
