Have done lot of research and seems this is a shift solenoid problem, however it's slightly different to what is usually diagnosed as it went away for a little while after driving for about 35mins on a hot day. Then back to problem after running it next time.

OD switched on I.e. No light on, however intermittently flashes. Drive shifts from 1st to 3rd and no overdrive present. Tried to shift into 2nd and sometimes it does, and sometimes 2nd acts like neutral.

After 35mins driving on one occasion gearbox suddenly turned back to normal. Working perfectly and no OD light flashing

Shift solenoid? Not sure why it behaved normal if it was a failed solenoid

Assuming youve checked the fluid level, i would be pulling the ECU and checking the condition (will likely have leaking caps if untouched, may or may not be related to this issue but will need to be fixed anyway)

Otherwise you will need to work out the fault code, if you have an EMV car (ie, touchscreen) there is a fault diagnosis mode you can access which makes it easy, otherwise you will need to do it by counting the flashes of the O/D light

Either way you will need to grab the workshop manual or find out how to do this online, try soarercentral.com

Thanks mate. I'll start with fluid level as I haven't had a chance to check it while hot. Also has cold start issue so could be caps I'll go there first. Thanks mate
