So I bought a Jeep, number one mod on my list is a Double DIN headunit, mainly for reverse camera but all the extra's are just a bonus. Now I don't want something like a Sony Xplode headunit circa 2005 so my short list thus far is..

The cleaner more factory looking appearance the better obviously. I only came across the Nakamichi by chance thanks to cookies suggestions, never knew they made anything more than cool looking clock radios you see at JB HiFi. Anyone got any feedback on them?

Any suggestions will be greatful

Pretty sure they used to be considered high end in terms of audio. Early LS400s had them as factory installs. Despite the name, they are owned by a Chinese brand, so they may/may not have improved since.

I put a cheapish double din Kenwood in my shitter ute, then they released one with Bluetooth and hands free for the same price a week later, anyway, JBhifi usually sell the budgetish ones.

Yeah, I was thinking 500-600, 1700 is a bit crazy considering the Nav part can be done by my phone :P

Try and get an Android Auto/Apple Carplay compatible head unit. If possible one compatible with Android Auto 2 (rumoured to be a wireless connection)

You'll probably want one that tilts for the Renault yeah? Head-unit would sit quite low compared to head height for you?

What is all the fuss about Android Auto? From what I have seen it looks gimmicky as fuck, I mean a 16:9 headunit screen mirroring a phone screen in portrait... yuk. I'd rather get the Nakamichi that has a Digital TV Tuner and watch tv lol

Good point actually.

You pretty much get what you pay for these days when it comes to headunits.

Anything sub $700 is slow, clunky, shitty graphics and highly prone to software issues. It doesn't matter what brand we are talking about either, they are all very average units under the $700 price point.

Out of the list you have there, the only one I would consider would be the Clarion VX316

https://ultimate-car-audio.myshopify.com/collections/12v-tv-dvd-combos/products/clarion-vx316au-6-2-inch-multimedia-station

I did sell the Kenwood DDX4016bt, but I have had nothing but problems with them. That being said, the higher end Kenwood units are awesome and some of my favourite units.

I can also get the Nakamichi, but they are just cheap, nasty chinese decks with an old defunked brand name slapped on for good measure. Jensen most likely comes out of the same chinese factory, as they are horrible units to use and listen to. The distributor is off loading Nakamichi cheap at the moment as they can not keep up with the warranty returns.

As for Android Auto, it is actually quite good. It allows your GPS, Phone calls, sms messages and music/videos to be controlled and viewed on the screen in a GUI that is designed specifically for vehicles.

It is a huge improvement over the shitty "Mirrorlink" system which was basically a video input from the your phone.

I had a Clarion entry level double DIN in my PJ Ranger a few years back and liked it. Your feedback has me sold on that unit (or the next model up, now I am decided on Clarion)

I should PM you about drop off-pick up installed ready to go price but I am a jew haha

EDIT; Next model up looks rank 2005 spec Sony xplode.

Look again then. It's not screen mirroring and it works really well. Everything including voice commands works through it, so when you recieve a message it'll read it out and let you dictate a reply and send it, starts navigation, etc all from voice commands.

...Shitty graphics...

It's aftermarket car audio, it's always gawdy as fuck.
