View Full Version : Mixing ATF fluids - Supra MK4 Auto
Looking at servicing the JZA80 2jgte auto box (A340E), the fluid is dark, but not a bad burnt black, probably a very dark red to light brown. I'm not sure if its Dexron or ATF-IV in there. Question is how should I service:
1. Do a sump drain (~2litres) as per the recommendation, however what do I add Dex or ATF-IV and is it ok to mix as I don't know what's in there.
2. Full flush with Dex or ATF-IV (I know its not recommended to do a full flush or at least not very often)
Only experience I have is:
I did a full flush to ATF-IV on my old soarer and it ran fine, however I think the guy I sold it to after about a year had it for sale with a stuffed gearbox. Obviously don't know how he treated it, but the box did always have a bit of a delay engaging so it might have been on its way out to start with...
Cheers

I'd go with a full flush, A340's are time bombs anyway!
I always disconnect a tranny cooler line, have it go into a bucket, run the car till fluid stops coming out, top up the fluid with new stuff with the same amount that came out.
Repeat until you get new fluid.
I think I used about 10 - 12 litres last time I did a soarer.

My Toyo has the required fluid written on the dipstick. Have a look there and use what it says to.
I used Toyota Type IV in mine.

Anyone else used Chief oils? I used it once in my Navara and the engine oil light would flicker at idle. Went back to penrite after 5 km.

Prefer to use Fuchs, haven't had any issues, but without doing a proper scientific analysis, I cannot be sure myself.
Think ill try the mobil atf 3309, apparently its same as the Toyota atf type4.. Can get good price on ebay in 1litre bottles. You let the entire box run dry before you put it in? Any point in sump draining first? Or just pull the cooler line and empty 2litrss, add 2 litres until it runs clean. Or maybe just run until sump volume of 4litres comes out the cooler line and add four litres, repeat 3 times?
Also with these boxes, do you need to shift between all gears while running it out of the cooler line, or is park ok?
I basically got a clear 2L juice bottle and waited until it filled with old fluid before filling with 2L of fresh fluid. Pumped it out just in Park.
Rinse and repeat until the stuff coming out is nice and red.
Once you think you have the right amount of new fluid in, then start cycling through the gears and topping up as required.
Just saw that chief mohito specifies it can be used where toyota fluids are specified.... Haven't seen that before... Bloody cheap. Don't know if I'd risk it tho
