If he is just starting out or seeing if its his thing dont spend to much, I got some Pioneer DJ 3500's and a basic twin cd with mixer from JB and used my home stereo as an amp might be a good start, they sometimes have specials. My set up is basic, the new tech in this industry is far beyond my knowledge

Go for one of the pioneer controllers and use the software called Rekordbox. Then when you want to fork out more money for club decks (cdjs), you won't have to spend a huge amount of time redoing cue points etc because you would need to swap software.

I'll put more input after work tonight with some decent models. Second hand is usually pretty decent way to save a ton of coin. What is his budget?

I've got a couple of CDJ-300's with all the bits (Serato, etc) for you to plug into a laptop. Definitely a good beginner setup.
PM me if you're keen

Alright, haven't got as much time as I like, but will throw some basic info. PM/ fb me if you have anymore specific questions. Again, budget plays a huge part, as in $200-15,000 for a set of decks...

250 will get a decent starter deck. Any of pioneer's DDJ range, Tractor's S2/S4, Numark Mixtrack Pro 3.

500+ Will get a very decent controller. 4 channel, latest features. Higher end DDJ RANGE etc

1000-1500 will get a decent second hand CDJ setup. DJM 700+ (the mixer), and go for CDJ 900nxs. The non-nexus is ok but if you're forking out, may as well get the nexus, it's worth it.

2000 will get a Pioneer XDJ-RX. This is currently the best standalone controller. It's basically a compact version of today's high end CDJ setups with only slightly less features.

4000 will get the current club setup of today. CDJ2000nxs, DJM 800/850/900. He's welcome to have a spin on mine to see what he's in for.

Lower end controllers are good to see if you like it or not, but within a couple of months you will want to go bigger. If he plans on playing clubs as a goal, either the XDJ-RX or CDJ900/2000nxs is pretty much mandatory (whether that's now or later).

I would buy this right now.

I just purchased one and so did my mate. Best bang for buck controller you can buy at that price.

Sorry for late replies - I'm locked up in hospital after a car accident - blown several discs. They are keeping me dumbed done on morphine every few hours.
Usb connect
Budget 1k max for now.

Own to good second hand gear as long as instructions etc are available.

We live in Busselton so if buying second hand, it will be bought sight unseen so don't want to get sucked in.
His best mate is doing club work now under the name " Binxx" or "Badmøns".
My son has used a few of his mates decks, and must be OK as he was offered a trial at a Bunbury night club.
I have a marantz and a kenwood amp that he can use if need be
Any help much appreciated

Most instruction manuals will be available online from the manufacturers site, but I'd highly recommend testing second hand gear before buying it. Most is ok and is a great way to save some coin, but gear can take a thrashing (cue button mostly). You can feel if a button is fucked as it will have a different feel to the rest.

They are all USB connect. Only difference is that with controllers, you have to have the laptop attached to operate them. CDJs you don't have to, and is basically the only way to walk up and plug only a USB stick into decks and play.

In saying that, you can use rekordbox as a program to control the controller, then when he wants to go out and play on CDJs with just a USB, all he has to do is export the songs he has already analysed, reference point info etc onto a USB and he's good to go.
