Guys whats the easiest way to remove the oil filter on one of these? ive done plenty of 1JZ's there enough room to remove from top, but on the 2J it looks extremely cramped. One website mentions removing the battery and getting it from the top like that? I'll be doing it at home so i cant stand under car, only lie under it if i have to.

Also, are the Ryco filters good enough or do i need like a HKS $$$ with bypass valve etc? anyone tried the re-usable $300 ones with mesh filter and magnets? gimmik?

If you recommend a filter and part number would be good too.

cheers

Did mine in the driveway. Was a pingpingpingping to get off and went from underneath. Drove the car up onto stands though.

I use Ryco, haven't had any issues.

I run Penrite oil at the moment.

From underneath, I bought a 10 pack of genuine Toyota filters a while back. $10 if you want one.

Mines VVT so I've stuck with 10-30 and use Mobil 1.

Definitely run a genuine filter, cut into a ryco and a genuine filter to see the difference.

Ive always removed it from the top. Its easier with the battery removed, no big deal really.

Thanks guys, I've order 10 pack of genuine filters, and I'll be attempting with battery out from the top.

Ive run ryco from rebuild to now on mine. Not one drama, motor still looks brand new inside.

Less about the filter and oil you use and more about how often you replace them.

Ive run penrite in my motor.
Ran 10w60 and 10w70 both were fine and gave solid oil pressure. Now running a 15w60 due to the e85 and the way the car is sitting.

If the micron level is different you won't see a difference in the color of your oil but there is a reason they are cheaper.
Also watch out for Chinese "genuine oil filters" as they are being copied.
Also if you buy genuine filters try to get the ones made in Japan and not Thailand.
The Thai ones have letters in the part number but the jap ones are just straight numbers.

This thread has a few videos of a guy gutting out different filters

I tried a few years ago to get the proper Japanese filters but had zero luck, the part number just supersedes to YZZD2

I found wrapping the filter in sand paper gave the extra grip required in the awkward position.
