Well, not a great start to the year for the Bombers or the teams that traded in Bombers players (St Kilda must be absolutely filthy.)

http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-12/cas-upholds-wada-appeal-essendon-anti-doping-verdict/7081874

I'm sure DanWA will be pleased to wake up to the news.

It's just not fair that even if it will take a while, the club can come back from this but the players might not ever be able to. Their lives are ruined but the club isn't.

Please don't cry for professional footy players who made their own decision to sign waivers prior to the injections. That alone will make it difficult for the players to sue the club for damages.

ASADA chief executive Ben McDevitt said the CAS verdict brings the entire saga to a close.

“This unfortunate episode has chronicled the most devastating self-inflicted injury by a sporting club in Australian history,” McDevitt said.

“There were very little grounds for the players to claim they were at no significant fault.

“The players had received anti-doping education through the AFL and ASADA, and were well aware that they are personally responsible for all substances that entered their body.

“Unfortunately, despite their education, they agreed to be injected with a number of substances they had little knowledge of, made no enquiries about the substance and kept the injections from their team doctor and ASADA.”

“Of 30 ASADA testing missions during the period in question, none of the 18 players tested declared the injections, despite being asked each time whether they had taken any supplements.”

“At best, the players did not ask the questions, or the people, they should have. At worst, they were complicit in a culture of secrecy and concealment.”

“The CAS result brings this matter to a close and ASADA looks forward to continuing to work with all sporting codes to promote a clean and fair sporting environment.”

stormtrooper

Absolutely rekt. As Dave said, they signed the waivers, they didn't seek outside professional advise as to the legality of what they were taking. Sure the entire process should have been faster instead of being dragged out for as long as it did, that was in itself a complete disservice to the players and the sport. Dank needs to be charged and never allowed to practice again, ever. Hird needs to be thrown out of the sport completely. Whole things a mess but the key people pulling the strings, making the decisions and ultimately signing off on the program need to be dealt with accordingly.

Didn't Paul little come in after the fact to handle the mess?

Yep. He would have had compelte oversight of everything that was going on as well though. Isn't he a lawyer? Sure he was doing some dodgy shit to try get the club out of the mess, hence why he was there in the first place. At best his motives were questionable. Fuck him too.

might put money on them for the wooden spoon

The_Senator
12-01-2016, 01:54 PM
Class action? Is this a case of "not taking responsibility for ones actions"

Remember, there where Essendon players that declined to take part in the Doping Program.

Anyone of them could have Asked, Googled or even questioned the what's and legalities of the "treatment". The fact they did not, was the reason why CAS handed them such a harsh penalty..

XT43
12-01-2016, 02:14 PM
As if there's not going to be a law firm that's going to be keen on representing X amount of players pulling the ' I felt if I didn't do it I wouldn't get a game / would be behind everyone else " card, especially if it won't cost them anything if they don't win. I wouldn't be surprised if a lawyer decided to do it pro bono just to shove it up Essondons arse.

If I was a player caught out, I sure as shit would try something as my ability to earn a dollar just dived ( past and present players as any past player won't be able to coach or have anything to do with footy )
Any legal action from players v club or v Hird personally would be welcomed in my book to throw the club or Hirds life in to more turmoil.

Fukushima
12-01-2016, 02:29 PM
Any other professional is expected to meet professional standards ie health professionals must always practice safely regardless of what your boss tells you to do... It's on you.

So these guys need to take responsibility for their actions and really should have four years ago. It is disappointing that the club/hird tried to draw it out and get away with it as its only made the players suffer longer.

stormtrooper
12-01-2016, 03:50 PM
LOL

"Thirty-four players will have no other right of recourse other than to sue the club which could probably be in the order of up to $30 to $40 million."

So appears they aren't allowed to appeal the WADA decision. Not sure they'd have any luck trying to sue the club when they signed waivers and willingly accepted the injections.

I feel bad for the players, Essendon on the other hand I couldn't give a toss about. At some point the players have to be able to trust their medical team, it's the club that's let the players down IMO. Harsh penalty.

Apparently the CAS decision is final, and no correspondence / appeals can be launched..

I'm petty sure they knew what they where getting themselves in for, that being getting an Advantage of strength and stamina over the opposition through the use of injectable substance. At some point in time you have to accept responsibilities for ones actions..

They cheated, they denied it, and then proven guilty. No remorse.

This arrogance is still very much on show through Tim Watson and co's comments to the media. After being found guilty by an international body, they continue to hang on to technicalities and protest their innocence to the world.

The_Senator
13-01-2016, 03:11 PM
Agreed. Timmy Watson is adamant that little Jobe *should not* lose his Brownlow.

The fact the AFL is even pandering to Watson is laughable. They are actually allowing him to come before the tribunal and "argue" his case of why he should not be stripped of it.
And now the AFL have invoked special dispensation for Essendon, an emergency Salary Cap top-up, so they can field a competitive team in 2016. If they get $6m more, then every other club should too. They cheated. They got caught. They lose 12 players - they should have to cop it sweet. If they where not so arrogant about it, they'd not be in this position right now.

Indeed! lol :o

I think what has happened is fair enough.

Don't muck around and "try" cheat the system, don't look for stupid loopholes that don't exist because you got found out, don't answer wrongfully when asked/don't attempt to hide anything, don't throw all the evidence away and lastly, don't let Hird and any of the Essendon board anywhere near a footballer again.

Yeah sure, an itsy-bitsy part of me feels sorry (especially for those at ANOTHER CLUB), the players got PUNK'D, but it's partially their fault to, if you want to go around to Danks shop and get on the juice, then you're as bad as the board for not questioning the situation and/or you're in denial ("if it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, looks like a duck...it's a duck" - the situation smelling of rotten eggs!)

Will be interesting to see what the convicted players make out of this, I also wonder what other clubs will now be thinking, those who've picked up one of the juicers?

Also,

Fuck Tim Watson....god he pisses me off more than Luke Darcy. Goodness me, I love footy and it's right around the corner, how convenient that all of this should happen!

Not to mention the fact that they refused to declare the injections. Enjoy the wooden spoon.

All good ;) I would normally agree if the circumstances weren't so severe. However this would be an awesome chance, and even moreso an experiment, that Worsfold could used to give the younger players game time and experience, and who knows they may surprise a few people. Bringing in some outside players to fill the gaps when the banned players may well be returning next year would be putting a lot of pressure on their salary cap I'd have thought?

The_Senator
15-01-2016, 10:58 AM
Question is... How much is the AFL going to allow, monetary wise, Essendon to go over and above their Salary Cap?

Enough to lure some recently retired players out of retirement for that "one last shot".. Or just enough to get 12 or so "Newbies" a shot at some game time when they would otherwise be on the fringe?

Bulldogs ball use out of the back line was some of the best I've seen for ages. 2 / 3 handballs to guys running forward ( none of the old backwards shit ) and then a long kick to a lead on the wing / half forward line was refreshing to see. Hopefully it's a sign of game plans to come rather than the over use of hand balls trying to draw a man and break a line that we've seen in previous years from majority of teams. Have been off the grid with no reception fishing since Thursday

Collingwood has epic drug problem. How they let them play the drug cheating Bombers on Anzac Day still is beyond comprehension

Caught the end of the Cats/Hawks game, that was epic, Dangerfield has completely changed the Cats so far!!!

Freo, well was pretty expected with Ross Lyon still in charge. Still refuses to blood new players. Oldest team in the comp just like what he did to the Saints. How Mayne gets a game is astonishing. Hope it gets better for supporters sake its been a long hard road since 95'. So apart from part time player and druggy Bennell who is really missing besides bringing Yarran in finally. Bulldogs on fire. Going to upset a few teams this year!

Kennedy with 8 already, good start! Kicked more than the whole Dockers team

MadDocker

Our leading goal kicker last year was in the 40s. Kennedy kicks almost a quarter of that in his first game. Reckon WCE got a decent deal for Judd there.

Any injury layoff for Bennell is going to be a drug ban rumour. Could be right but I dont think so. He injured the calf in the WAFL game and the club said straight away they didn't know how long to get it right.

Won't happen, Lyon even said in his post game media conference he won't play any kids because he thinks they don't have any coming up due to injury, moving on or some other reason. Interesting reasoning considering every other team has been able to do it.

Playing young kids that aren't ready for the AFL is a complete waste of time and risks them getting injured.

Bring them up through the WAFL and only promote the ones that are playing consistently. Exactly what hawthorn does.
If you need to top up your list you should bring in mature age players that are playing consistent football in your local competition.

All the Freo young kids received their career ending injuries in the WAFL according to Lyon so it kinda makes your statement pointless about not getting them injured in AFL.

When your 0-3 you start need throwing caution to the wind, you need hunger and leg speed more then experience.

You say you need more mature players with consistent game time like Hawthorn, problem is Freo is already number 1 for age and game time on average and when the younger guys are seeing the mature guys getting picked over them they will jump clubs because they know most on average will get 2-4 years at elite level so they want to make the most of it rather then wait till mature levels to get a chance with one club.

It's only becoming more evident with time that he is going all out for a premiership now for himself then long term success for the clubs sake which is what exactly happened with St Kilda.

No doubt Lyons is smart, I rate him one of the smartest men in AFL. I always get a laugh out of the post game media conference because he runs rings around them. But doesn't mean his goals automatically match up with Freo. I just see him trying to snatch a cup now and wrecking the list for the next 5 years in doing so then rebuilding over the next two or so years and having a premiership cup potential team for 4-6 years.

To me the premiership window for Freo past when they lost the GF and especially this year with the new meta of winning.

Have to wonder how much truth there was in the pre-season report of a high profile recruit failing a drug test at his new club.. No, this isn't a troll attempt either

FREMANTLE recruit Harley Bennell won't be available to make his Dockers debut until the second half of the season as he is set to undertake an eight-to-10-week program to rehabilitate his injured calf.

Bennell re-injured his calf playing in round one of the WAFL, just a week prior to the start of the AFL season.

Dockers coach Ross Lyon said last week that the club had sought specialist advice on Bennell's calf issues from AIS head of physical therapies, Craig Purdam.

Freo confirmed on Tuesday that Bennell would be out for eight-to-10 weeks in an effort to fix the calf issues for the long term.

The club also said that ruckman Aaron Sandilands would miss six weeks following the severe rib and lung injury he suffered against West Coast on Saturday night.

Sandilands is still in hospital after needing surgery on Sunday to fix multiple fractures and re-inflate his punctured lung.

Skipper David Mundy will miss this week's crucial clash with North Melbourne with a calf problem. He was ruled out of last week's Western Derby last Friday after suffering the injury at training on Thursday.

The Dockers are hopeful Mundy will be right for the round five clash with Carlton at Domain Stadium.

MadDocker

And a calf injury history like that as well...

Copping an injury in a WAFL game and having an extended recovery while the team is having its worst season in a fair while isn't so unbelievable. Not like he was in contention and copped a mystery injury no one saw and wasnt reported on or something. Also don't think they would of been playing him in the WAFL if he was serving a drug ban.

Fairly confident it's a legitimate injury. Doesn't mean he isn't going to get pinged for drugs but I sure hope not.

MadDocker

The word is it was known about and only become media worthy about the calf when the b sample was in

You're aware he did the calf in the late stages of the WAFL game, there was footage of him grabbing at it and it was reported immediately as a calf injury right? They didn't wait until any samples to come out and say he had re injured and was facing some time on the sidelines, it happened as soon as the injury occurred. He's also spent time with specialists etc that have their names out in the media as helping him with the injury. I'd be surprised if any specialist would let their name be used like that without actually being involved with the patient.

I'm sure there are cover ups and funny things that go on behind the scenes but this seems fairly elaborate and involves too many people. All it would take is the Dr to come out and say "Nope never talked to me" and the whole charade would be over.

Following this, the club has a history of out casting people not performing/doing the wrong thing and not letting them around the main squad. Walters, Clancee Pearce, Sylvia etc. all were pushed to the WAFL and not included in the AFL side, rehab or training. Why would Bennell be different?

People will believe what they want to believe, including me. Just doesn't add up as some conspiracy coverup IMO.

Yeah, seeing as it's been widely reported by his manager that they'd be back at the trade table at the end of this year seeking a trade to Freo, McCarthy is a reasonably safe bet as a player they'll target.

From Jan. There were others before this along the same lines. - http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-29/cam-mccarthy-takes-indefinite-leave-from-gws/7124234

Any others you reckon would be in the scope to have a crack at?

GWS must be howling. Freos future draft pick (their offer for him last season) is now likely to be 1-3, and McCarthy running around with a WAFL team.

Patton must be a target for a few teams now too.

I'm not familiar with this, have had front row seats since the last Subi update, thanks to my nans mentioning bad knee's on the phone one time lol

Wouldn't be the first time a Freo supporter had changed teams!!

Eagles are horribly shit but got the job done. Pretty worried about Geelong next week!

Carlton beating the drug cheats is just epic

Not changing teams but you have to be interested in a team in the competition!

Was rooting for the eagles in grand final last year until they failed to show up

Eagles were never going to win that game...

Owen Seven... yet another week of the umpires trying to get them their first win to... another record breaker for the cabinet also... The first ever W.A team to lose to GWS in W.A

17-15 free kick count is not "trying to hand them a win"

The count is irrelevant. GWS got screwed hard as have a few other teams in the past few weeks playing the 2015 Minor Premiers.

What happened to Lyon playing kids and trying to blood new players? Clancee, Mzungu, Mayne & Suban still getting games (and still providing nothing)

Saying that, first half & Last quarter was good by Freo, totally out played the C grade Hawks...

Went to sleep in the 3rd quarter and went from 2 points in front to 51 behind, hard to come back from that with Ross Lyon as a coach

Richmond next week at Subiaco should be an easy one, fuck off Owen?

Bombers lowest ever first half score since 1915... The James Hird legacy!

Worried about my own team with the Saints tomorrow, they are playing good footy!

Brisbane remaining scoreless til nearly halfway through the 2nd, just wow. LOL at Justin leppitsch face when it was 61-0 pretty much said it all.

Richmond out of nowhere!! what a finish!!!

Probs not good for freo I would of pencilled that in as their first win but that win over the swans might give them the spark and a bit of confidence to get a win over in perth. They have been here once already so they should be well prepared to take on subi!
