Autocross - WA Car Club Summer Autocross Series

First one is on Wednesday. I'm going to head down to watch and if it looks like fun might grab a cheap shitter off gumtree and go have some fun.
Anyone else keen?

Mate does it every year and absolutely loves it - started with an excel, is now running a civic.
ran a VS commo once and had a blast. There is a thread already on this if you haven't seen.
You can share the car with up to 4 people I think so its ridiculously fun and cheap. Rally tyres if you want to be somewhat competitive.
They also hold these in bunbury, beverly and a few other places which we haven't done yet but Bunbury track looks really good!

Oh so the President has to start the thread for anyone to be interested!? :P
Already a thread Brockas.
I can't make this Wednesday but will do the one after which is in early December. It's good fun and you DONT need gravel/dirt tyres. Toward the end of the night the racing line is so smooth you're actually quicker on road tyres!
Edit: thread here http://www.antilag.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59951

Yes, I'd say so. By the final runs of the night you can hear tire squeal from some cars.
That said, this year it looks like the course takes in a bit more of the outer dirt (as opposed to the inner clay) which can get a bit choppy.
If you run road tyres it's slippery as hell for the first run or two (fun!) but by nights end when you're quicker and the track's quicker it looks like roadies are generally the way to go.

We're on our third car so far. It will die this season, well that's the plan. Not so easy to kill an 80s RWD Toyota it seems... Budget $300 tops for a car. Add extinguisher. Race. Smash stuff. Kick out panels or smash off the rest of the damage. Race again. If the smoke gets let out, simply don't turn off between runs.
Very cheap (well, it can be) and great fun. Will miss this round too, but dec or jan is the plan.
We don't touch the car. Tyres, Plugs, oil, water all remain as obtained. Car gets faster as it gets lighter as bits get deposited on the track. Lifting for tyre barriers is optional. Note to self, remember to lift when in expensive car!

Absolutely no rules except fire extinguisher. Head lights and windows are optional. If you want to win i reckon something like a na impreza 4wd. If you want lots of fun something like a ef / el falcon ir vr / vs commo 6 banger with a welded diff. This does not suit your mantra of if it is worth doing it is worth overdoing mr Blaise.

When I sold my First old 68 Mini, I had a chat with the buyer that he built his own open chassis with Mini front sub frames for the Autocross.
Would make sense if I was thinking about it.
Light skeleton with a short wheel base.
Making reverse entry and around the cones would be easy compared to bigger cars.

How many people running s13s?
lachy294
13-11-2015, 10:00 AM
Not many, only seen one recently and that was a gravel rally car. The most common cars are excels, late 90s lancers, couple of pulsars and there are a couple of WRX's that are regulars.
If you are looking to win the night, you'll probably need something AWD. Saying that, the last round of last season was won by a lancer with r-comps on it. When there is a field of 30 or more, the track tends to get very grippy towards the end of the night.
To me a cheap, competitive car will be something light, and has some form of LSD in it.
This is regy and my shitter. $200 gumtree special. We didn't buy it to be competitive (obviously), just for some fun, we only did 1 event but had a really good time. It will return next event hopefully with a handbrake that works better.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa300/eed250/commo_zpsyfmkk6cc.jpg
To be honest we didn't even really look at the times of the other cars until the end of the night as we were too busy battling eachother. Would be epic if you had 4 people sharing the one car as it only comes down the driver(no bs excuses).
Our best lap times where within a tenth of eachother.
Here is a vid for anyone who wants to know what it's like. Skip forward 30seconds and excuse the sloppy driving.

Don't go FWD. It is plain wrong. Fast, and fun it can be, sure. But you need RWD. Problem is getting mid 80's RWD snotbags is pretty hard now. Commode/Falc would do. Auto is not problem. We always just leave the car in 2nd gear with manuals anyways, so not like you're enjoying the purist manual experience at all.... Actually, the term 'purist experience' has no place at these events.
You may be faster in a car with money and time spent on it, but I'll never know. I think we get pretty good results from zero dollars racing, we tend to finish in the top 1/3 of RWD cars typically. It comes down to not caring if you win or bin. Normally, you tend to back off if not sure of making the corner. But with nothing to loose, you don't lift. If you get lucky, you get a good time in a crap car. Or you smash tyre barriers into next week. Either way is winning!
FWIW my wife says I should forget racing my GT and just do this stuff instead. Apparently I'm far happier and less stressed after smashing out time sand panels in a bunky than finding excuses for not winning and tearing up $100's in the GT. She could have a point there...but why not have both (insert meme here etc.).

The genius meth head that owned it tried to fix the distributor and bent the optical trigger so we need to fix that. Also may need a clutch as Rrob tried to kill it on 10min drive home. My first time last night and most don't take it too seriously with a few taking it way too seriously but the general feeling is it's hilariously fun, basically the cheapest Motorsport you can do...
Our $500 Bluey was around mid pack most of the night and copped a little bit of fender damage due to Robs driving but still good to go. Track is surprisingly grippy when dry (but very bumpy) and almost like ice when wet.
We (the two antilag Bluebirds) only got reprimanded twice last night, once for our sideways behavior after the finish line and once for ramming cars in the staging lane haha

I will kick in another panel on the car when I get home today to make it feel loved at least.
Reprimand for sideways after finish line must have been a big effort. Last year one of our team drivers (I won't name names 2X044) managed to lose it and centre punch a tyre barrier after the finish line without a reprimand. At least that we know of...

I now realise there's two very different types of motorsport that I love. One type which is just high-adrenaline stuff (Targa etc), and light-hearted hilarious stuff (Autocross).
It would be pretty close to the most amount of fun I've had in a car since bush-bashing at a mates farm when I was young. Can't believe how much of an awesome time everyone was having. Just constant laughs and highlights.
When i sent out out after the water truck, the guys up stairs were loosing it laughing along with everyone else. :p
LOL. That was like an ice rink. Steering wheel was useless for a good portion of it, you just went wherever the momentum took you!
So. So. So good. Everyone needs to come and try this.
Going halves with a mate in a car early next year. Are there any events that run during winter? Even at the tracks out of Perth.. Don't want to be waiting til next season!
Also peoples thoughts on FWD vs RWD, are you guys steering you FWD's with the handbrake haha? We were thinking possibly a 4AGE KE70 or similar but FWD seems a lot more popular.

If I can work out the online entry system (failing so far), then team panel beater will get the Celica fired up again. Just gotta clean out all the spiders, find a battery, pump up tyres, lots of start-ya-bastard and see how we go. Hasn't been started in a year, but we only bring it out for the big events! Oh, and borrow a trailer of some sort to get it there, and maybe home, depending if it lives the night. Unfortunately it probably will.
Just two of us entering in it thus far. If you want a drive (we can have 3 drivers), hit me up and I'll talk to the other party who has shares in this zero dollar high stakes racing team about admitting you to the top end of motorsport royalty.

I figure that my rex with –
• 350,000k's on the clock
• only makes half regular boost when getting hot (7psi)
• outside looks more and more like a bunky each day with fading paint and dented panels
– I can just qualify to be considered as being an almost allowable legit autocross car.
Will run road tyres and slide around like a loon for the first few runs on the wet dirt. Having not had a go for a few years this should be fun!

Last minute racing. I endorse this method of madness! Better go look at our weapon of choice soon and maybe see if it will go. Nah, too early junior....
Yep, 1 kg fire ext. and 4 wheels is about all you need. Helmet, long pants (pants!?), shirt and enclosed shoes. We generally go hi-vis work gear and big boots. Finesse has no place in rallycross.
If your puss-bucket doesn't work out, just turn up. We've got a driver spot left in our transport of delight if need be. If you do, then remember you owe me a drive of the 911!

Great night again. These nights are just the best fun for the cash.
All 3 of us got up on 2 wheels sideways through that corner opposite the start line, properly hilarious.
I nailed a tyre barrier trying to scando-flick through the chicane.
The Bluebird lasted the whole night but died at the very end. Back on gumtree to look for another shitter!

Great fun. Smashed both side mirrors up and remodelled front guards a little, but otherwise Celica going hard (slow) as ever. The push start with bonnet up while spraying start ya bastard into it is getting a bit labour intensive however...

Well managed to do a last minute master cylinder install and engage the services of a random young lad in the car park at the motorplex to help me bleed them up. Success. Had brakes. Then i did recci. I heard it was a little rough but fuck me!!!!!!!! :) Poor little swift with about 20mm of bump travel and 400lb springs and low profile tyres was punishing. Was crashing so hard over bumps the windscreen wiper stalk was turning on all by itself and the roof panel was playing a tune rolf harris would be proud of. Decided after a couple of timed runs I just couldn't bury my mechanical sympathy any more.. Am about 2 inches shorter with a splitting headache today.... :) oh and got a nice dose of food poisoning from my "steak burger" from the food van. :)
Needs a little more suspension travel and some sensible tyres but the event is a shit tonne of fun. Zero fucks given racing. The bluebird duel was highly amusing. Surprised it lasted all night. Was pretty sad by the second round.

So
Much
Fun
Also great fun watching Blaise's suspension work that hard! Don't feel too bad about the windscreen wipers as ours did it at least once and the other Bluey did it about every run. Our key also fell out of the ignition during my second run onto my knee which was fairly amusing. Stayed in center console the rest of the night (please don't take this as an invitation to steal it haha)

OMG This is amazing.
Ol' bluey lasted the night (just) we were all getting faster each run as the track was getting more and more grip. The car was cooking so much we couldn't pour any water in the radiator as it just boiled out so I did my last run without the cap on. The car protested and I went slower then my previous run but still loved it.
Each of us taking very different approaches to how we drove the car and the times were all still so close!
Best part is the whole zfg attitude you have, your sliding toward a wall/barrier and just giggle because you don't give a shit if you hit it!

Would auto be that bad really? Ours just stays in 2nd the whole time, so not like a manual gearbag would make much difference I'd have thought.
Can't do this round. Idiot #1 is flying back that night from working out bush and Idiot #2 is taking Honda to WAW, with the aim of finding a VTEC lover who would like to buy it. Hmmm, could make a good autocross weapon now I think about it! But no... So will come have a look and laugh throughout the night at least.

Just drove the little Barina from Nollamara to Spearwood, drives really good, looks rough as but it's only done 155000km, feels so weird driving something so small and darty after being in 4x4's for so long.
Leaving the house a small rollback resulted in clutch slip... then wheelspin all the way to the end of the street which was hilarious.
but yeah clutch needs doing, brakes need bleeding and i'll have a look at anything else broken underneath, going down for a look see on Wednesday and check it out, hopefully it's enough to convince my brothers they want a crack and to split costs.

I would think if youre running 2wd the most important thing would be either LSD or welded diff for traction, anything else (power, rally tyres etc) is just a nice-to-have...
Soarer will be there again. Only performance mods are an LSD rear end that no longer wants to detach itself from the car, and possibly rally tyres if i get them fitted in time :)

Hazy memories of that evening are flooding back now. They are good memories, good good memories. And then there were Hippos next door and a very Rhangry Dr. Even better was the drive home where someone who'd raised the ire of the Dr was opening the door of a sign written work vehicle yelling at randoms stuck in traffic and asking them if they thought the Dr was a "shitpingpingpingping" for kicking him out...

That would have been me that was forced to tell you that the powers upstairs would like it brought back in. The bumping is generally fine and usually giggled at(as long as its "safe"), the "intentional" spins are frowned upon just because it has ended badly in the past. Don't quote me on any of this though.
For reference the fastest laps I've seen done is by a 1.8 FWD lancer running old A050 Semi Slicks, shit for the first 2 runs but as soon as the shine comes up on the track, it was straight to the front. He also beat a Evo 7 gravel rally car in the final.

Will you be on the start line again? if so can you line us up behind the arancini ball and let us go straight after it? I want to ram the fuck out of those pingpingpingpings.
Shirtless lapdance/BBBJ/nude massage for the privelage.
Depends. Will you be administering the Shirtless lapdance/BBBJ/nude massage personally?
Also being lazy and haven't read the regs yet, what are the requirements around completeness of vehicles? Could a ute get away with not having a tray?
Hmmmm... not sure on that one Tomboy.
They Supp Regs say that a vehicle must comply with CAMS Manual of Motorsport, Schedule A & B (http://docs.cams.com.au/Manual/GeneralRequirements/GQ03-Schedule-AB-2016-1.pdf).
I would expect that it would be at the discretion of the Stewards to allow it compete.

Gates for spectators open at 5:30 racing from ~6:15/6:30
I'll be the one attempting to organize everyone into the groups to get out on the track, hopefully I don't get told to have a chat to anyone :p
Did a few stickers for tonight, cant wait! it will be the first time the car will be on a track so a bit of a shake down i hope nothing falls off!
PS if anyone wants vinyl cut stickers for anything let me know, i accept cash, car parts or Shiraz as currency :) i also do graphics & printing from home FYI.

So. Much. Fun. :D
Lexbus punched above its (considerable) weight, much drift, won award for best broken diff single pegger of the night
YPR had the wheels driven off it but needed more mangmang, diff welding and a non-fucked box by the sounds?
Blue Dardywagon quick, cant believe you guys got 300kg out of that thing haha
Silver Mangmang driven hard, sparks, flamage
Poobird quick, running reliably for a dirty Nissan, needs rally tyres on the front ;)
Hats off to Lachy and the guys for keeping a Gumtrees' worth of assorted shitboxen organised and running smoothly - good work!

It was its first day out and we were using it to see what would fail, most of the running is gear is pretty standard, Andrew did his 3 laps all was good when i jumped in i got to the first corner i went to change down and the clutch exploded! there where bits all in the bell housing, not sure how old it was but I'll fit a new one and have it ready for the next round and see what breaks then.

Was awesome fun, and god damn so funny! Was in the bluedardywagon with Clint, actual surprised how well it did and is still running, considering it had no battery or power steering hose when we inspected/bought it and was pissing fluid out when we first turned it on, and the drivers window doesn't stay up without gaffa tape
Loved all the yolo sideways actions, dardyalis was funny as, and the big burnout in the Lexbus when the diff decided to separate from the chassis :p I had just finished my run and came back onto the infield and saw this massive plume of smoke :D
Keen for the next one!

Dardialis needs stockies on the back. So ready to mang and spear one of it's drivers with a fence post from the cage.
Great to see so many people down there. Even with 45 everything ran pretty smoothly and we all got plenty of runs.
Flexus is the best. So much sideways. It's that good we'll actually fix this one instead of sending it to the scrap metal heap.

16s might be tricky, seems 90% of secondhand tyres around are either 14s or 15s
Try Becker Tyres in Mundaring or Kostera's in Kalamunda
But tbh its not a huge advantage over normal street tyres especially later in teh night when the clay gets really compacted
Unfortunately wont be there, i haven't had time to change out the clutch and Christmas funds are low.

Rollover was an interesting start to the night, we were watching the SSS as it looked extra bunky in the suspension, went over the hump and did a complete barrel roll  landed back on its wheels minus most of its glass, guy was like "it's still good!" and tried to carry on! Adrenalin at that stage I guess
It held up better than I thought it would
Track was really fast, we were hitting around 110 (with wheelspin) on the s/f straight, got some runs on camera (the slower ones unfortunately, this is one of the wet track ones)
