Howdy,

I'm doing my best to get into O&G to become a Process Plant Operator.

My only O&G affiliated experience has come from my Cert II Process Plant Operations at ACEPT.

I'm currently waiting for CCIWA applications to open, mid-year, and will go from there.

Has anyone on here been successful through the CCIWA application process? Got any tips, etc? Have any other avenues I should be mindful of?

I'm all ears.

Thanks,
Jacob.

I called them today, and CCIWA told me the openings for Process Plant Operators will be in July, no confirmed date as yet.

I'm getting some Mechanical/ Electrical Fitter openings popping up on my notifications, that what you're referring to? You might have different preferences though.

I'm just hoping someone on here has more insight towards the whole process, or different avenues.

Yep, I can walk into a job at Barrow any time I want because of my missus, have an ongoing open position for me. Never worked away or had site experience, but I can get a job over heaps of other guys. Sux in reality.

They seem to be Perth based - chasing the offshore apprenticeship - 6 years offshore experience hopefully helps :)

Definitely an industry of contacts.

Try get onto the Kwinana Strip as an entry level operator with Coogee Chemicals etc. A Trainee I am doing my traineeship with was doing that before cracking in.

Ausgti - neither - waiting for openings to all. No actual preference if onshore or offshore

Operators is a real "in the know" job ie. your *insert relative here works there already. When I was doing a lot of work up north (onshore and offshore) you talk with the operators a lot and they are fucking hard to get according to every one I've spoken to. O+G operators jobs are like the "new OHS" roles and every man and his dog is trying to get them. On top of that, a large number of people in the onshore construction side of things (kinda middle management / supervisor types) try and slide into those roles so they get continuity of work when construction dried up - and being "Johnny on the spot" and knowing the actual facility well certainly helps immensely.......

I wish you all the best.

I'm still pinching myself about getting a gig. Didn't know anyone at the company and thought I bombed out hard in the interview when about 40 minutes in a comment was made about the colour coming back into my face lol.

Was going to look into that as well, would be easy travel to work if I scored a gig there, but I'll start looking into it.

I wish you all the best.

It is very cut-throat. The odds of getting into the course going off of last years enrollment statistics works out to a 1 in 64 chance of getting through.

I'll sure as hell be trying my best, it's where I want to be. The money looks nice, but the actual work excites me, so job satisfaction would be a goodun'.

I may have a fall back option through Oceaneering, but as said, it's a fall back.

Job satisfaction as an production/process operator?

Time off and money are the ones you might actually get from it.

I did a operations traineeship with cci about 11 years ago. Was placed at csbp in Kwinana.

Applied, Interviews with cci then csbp. Got the spot. Ended up with cert2 in process operations.

I stayed at csbp for a while in the ammonia plant, which was a gas based process.
Moved on from there to an oil refinery. FIFO doesn't interest me at the moment.

If you cant get a traineeship in oil and gas, try get into a chemical process and make the jump when you have a couple of years experience.

A lot of the projects up north are almost at there quota's for operators and only want experienced people.

Sometimes you get into a position you want straight away, sometimes it takes a few years working towards it.

I'm extremely keen to get into the business, so if I do have to go the chem plant route, I'm fine with that.

For now though, I'm going to wait out the CCI opportunity, but I will keep my eyes on the kwiny strip. Nothing much at CSBP, but I guess I'm better off calling them.

Do you have any other recommendations for chemical plants down Kwinana way to look at?

Alcoa are pretty much a closed shop
Nickel west? I'm not sure if any of these guys would offer traineeships for people without industry experience.

I've been a process controller/operator/tech for 25 years, only in the last 4 have I had anything to show for it, I completed a cert IV in process plant technology and its been well worth the trouble, I'm two units away from the Diploma but I am lazy :)
