View Full Version : VPN hotness

Before Rupert Murdoch's metadata laws get passed I'd like to move over to VPN.
Mainly on principle but Sky F1 is calling and being able to download the odd missed TV show without facing massive penalties would be a bonus.
What's the hotness?
I use cyberghost, straightforward and does what i want it to

Private Internet Access
Open an account in Tobbys' name, whats another offense to the wrap sheet.
Has anyone else had a massive reduction in internet speeds when they have gone to VPN. I am on Private Internet Access and my speeds have gone to shit. I haven't tested the connection just yet but it feels as though it is about a quarter of the speed that it was before.
I'm trying to access different locations but I am not having much change in speeds.
Thoughts?

Different servers have different capacities, also not all do port forwarding (needed for torrent uploads).
Look on their client help page, has all this info.
Unless you are on NBN type speeds, speed drop shouldn't be noticeable.

Yep I had this, but it was only on a 4g wireless, home ADSL seems to have no issues. Not entirely sure why atm.

Last night on Q and A, George Brandis mentioned that copyright infringement/piracy is a "civil action" and therefore not covered by this federal law?
Not an expert in the area but found that interesting anyway - anybody care to elaborate?

there is soooooo many, Most Client based (installed locally) some Router Based available. essentially "VPN'ing" ALL devices connected to your home router .
you need to google what kinda traffic requirements you require and what would work for you.
Ive personally been with Unblock-us for around 6 months now, flawless netflix and huluplus, never any down time, never any throttling with Telstra for Torrents or Streaming content.
They are excellent, and for $6 a month (Netflix $6 and Huluplus $6) i cant believe i was paying for foxtel previously.
Alright I'll have a look on their help page.
I did a speed test and my DL speed is 9mbps without it and goes down to 1mbps when connected through VPN.

that would be because all your traffic is being routed through an extra server/s. probably just doesn't have enough bandwidth

That's because they don't "VPN everything" - they only VPN sites that need it (using DNS and based on their list) via thier reverse-proxy infrastructure. This is generally just the Netflix/Hulu API's.
There is no throttling as they don't touch your torrent/streaming content at all.
Not the same as a full VPN.
Got it all sorted finally. I am now getting download speeds that are 20% faster than what I had before installing it. WIN!

Changed to a higher bandwidth server? Or something more technical?

did you change something on your end?
pretty sure there is no way that a VPN can increase your raw connection speed...

VPNs tend to bottle neck at a lower speed (than your raw speed) based on host server bandwidth limits.
On PIA they have different servers with different bandwidths, features (e.g. IP forwarding has limited availability) & locations.
Change to a different one and you can effect your VPNs overall speed.

I uninstalled the VPN and followed a different tutorial as well as connecting to and speed testing all the different servers to see which one got the best speeds.

Yeah I didn't think it would be possible as I was under the impression that my ISP plan would be the weakest link. I did go from 10mbps to 12 though in the test I did last night, and I am still hitting 12 now.

your ISP plan is the weakest link, online speed tests can be a pretty poor indicator of raw connection speed. When I do a speed test it shows ~ 20/0.9 but my modem syncs at 24/1 (and I frequently obtain download speeds of 2.2mbps +)
your modem should display the raw connection speed and that is dictated by your plan/line quality/modem etc

Link to tutorial you followed?
Ok I understand.
I just followed the main tutorial for Win 8. For some reason the first time I installed it I used some random Install guide from the forum. It was mainly just me being a mong that caused the shit connection speeds.
I have come across another problem however. I am not able to download torrents with the VPN connected? I am using Frostwire at the moment. Should I download U/Bittorrent?

I use utorrent + PIA no problems.
For uploads look up port forwarding, you'll need this.

Ok I've read a little bit about this stuff but still a complete nub. My current internet provider is iprimus... If I wanted to hook up Netflix for example to my TV via Internet how are you guys getting it to happen?

For netflix, use getflix.com.au - not a VPN, just a name server service.

Thinking about setting up the same thing, have you done it through an Xbox?

Anyone able to answer this one?
There is no AFL on Netflix that I've seen.
Can't comment on Hulu.

Just started using a VPN to get my anonymity going on.
For anyone interested.

i have PIA, but my housemates do not. is there any way to set it up so all traffic goes through the router or do i have to give them my account details so they can use it as well ? as it allows for 5 connections i think ?

i've been weighing up using Buffered VPN or PIA.
A lot of good reviews for Buffered - fastest VPN for Australia apparently.

Just signed up for a month on Buffered.
speedtest.net on east coast USA gives me 5.14 Mbits

With PIA during the day and early evening I am getting around 9-11 Mbits, but from about 8ish it drops down to like 4ish Mbits. I just turn it off while browsing and when I want to download torrents I just chuck it on. Still download an episode of whatever in a few mins.

Do you guys setup a VPN provided by the services above, in your router at all ?

I've just got it going for my PC.
Having massive issues with Netflix though. It'll work for a while then it won't connect. My Router is definitely the issue. Ports 80 and 443 won't open on TP protocol, only UDP. And sometimes the router doesn't see the computer is connected to it. Setting IP address to auto and remocing port forwarding, reset pc and router, then set static ip and port forwarding seems to work. But fuck doing that every couple days.

i only have the VPN in my torrent settings, dont care about the rest of my traffic (though DNS requests are going to getflix)

Currently using PIA connected to Hong kong for port forwarding purposes. Is there a faster gateway available to use for port forwarding with PIA?

website indicates that they have an AU address
personally rather use offshore in case for some reason the lawyers ever want their records or such

Yeh the Australian gateway does not have port forwarding so the lowest ping connection other than that was Hong Kong.

I finally got ESET to accept CyberGhost, though the speeds still seem slower (even though I've changed protocols and set rules etc.)
Torrents have slowed to 1/3rd or 1/4th their usual speed if not more, and I can't get SABnzbd to work - it's starting to shit me. Can't locate much info either online and what I have found already I have tried and to no avail.
Anyone recommend a more user-friendly alternative that works Firewall wise?
