So my PS3 media server has inexplicably stopped working, all my devices wont pick it up. So what media server would you recommend?

TVersity has done well by me (Paid version). Probably decent free ones out there too

Should add, new 3.0 version will stream to Apple, Chromecast etc as well. I just use it on the PC to stream wirelessly to my PS3. Looking to fix that soon with CAT 5/6 cable and a second modem to unleash the fury

Plex shits on everything especially if running a newer TV that has apps. If so even the PS3 becomes obsolete.

Basically what is does is when you place the video in the selected file, Plex runs it against the IDMb online database and pulls up all the info about the movie/tv show as to who produced it, ratings, who is in it and so on.

Uninstall and reinstall. Takes 2 minutes.

Tried that didn't work. Ended up finding the problem, for some reason my windows decided to make my whole network go public and the firewall went into hard mode so exceptions failed. I set every thing back over to home private network and it sorted itself out.

Does Plex transcode? CBF converting MKV's where as PS3MS plays just about anything, it's only big downfall for me is I can't use it with my tablet.

If you have a jail broken ps3 theres an app that does that, called showtime. Try swapping from ps3 media server to universal media server. It's based on the same code but forked off a while back, gets regular updates.

I have Plex at home set-up by Philbo, runs very well from my limited experience. If he could find some decent copies it would be even better.....LOL

I just plug a hard drive or usb directly into the tv, yet to find a format that it won't play.
If i have files larger than 4gb i stream from the pc using KooRaRoo, it all works pretty well.

Win7 pc + 6 x 2TB as server in office, ethernet to HP i3 laptop in lounge running XBMC and EventGhost to allow for IR remote control. Also use UniversalRemote (android) to remote control laptop over wifi using my phone, rather than kb/mouse.

Yatse Remote (android) allows for wifi control of XBMC, library syncing and streaming/resuming to phones for watching in bed etc. Also allows for "casting" of youtube videos from phone straight to XBMC.

Identical to my setup, except I alternate between my logitech gamepad and using the XBMC iphone/ipad app for control.

plex runs on my drobo5n with 5 x 4tb red. Drobo runs a linux kernal and single click installation of applications

Plex is fantastic! Pulls data from the net, categorises things, Steams 1080p over wireless n smoothly with no issues to multiple sources.

Plex for the winning!

That in combination with couchpotato https://couchpota.to/

automatically searches all torrents sites and then downloads the copy best suited to your preferences (cam, blueray etc) uses utorrent authentication, or can even talk to the torrent applcation built into the nas.

Completely automated now.

I've tried Plex, XBMC and recently Serviio. I rate Serviio as the best option, free, stable, lightweight and runs on pretty much anything.

Currently in process of building my N54L Microserver (can be had for $229 on sale, and hands down better than any 4 Bay NAS you can buy, actually can put up to 7-8 drives in the N54L if you get creative...) 16Gb RAM, FreeNAS, RAIDZ1, 5x3Tb HD's, Serviioo, Couch Potato, etc... usual suspects. Aim is a balance of redundancy, storage capacity, cost, and low cost to run 24/7.

I gave up on the PS3 as a media server a long time ago. You can't beat a laptop plugged into the HDMI port. That's all I use now, especially coz I watch a lot of shows online or on YouTube.

I'm running PS3 Media server, Serviio, Plex

on my old Sony tv I'm using a wd tv live with PS3 media server just simple to use and never lets me down... Serviio as back up

on my Samsung smart tv.. Plex has an app available so it was super easy to use and like what everyone else say it categorized all your shit for you and even your tv series

How fast is the plex app on smart tvs?
I've always hated previous gen tv based apps as they've always been so slowwww.

Just set up plex on my samsung tv. No idea why I haven't done this earlier.

-Now Looking at getting the olds tv in the living room setup to access my movies/tv shows etc, It's an older sony tv (non-smart). Had looked at getting a chromecast and running plex, but wondering if there's something a bit more old person friendly out there???

gotta love PS3 media server!

I haven't ever had an issue that a uninstall/reinstall didnt fix and it plays everything I've ever served to it

I don't suppose the PS4 has anything similar? Still on my oldskool fat ps3 I got free with my bravia in 2008 too :)
