4WD advice - GU Patrol 4.2 or 105 Landcruiser 4.2

Evening gents,

I've been looking at buying a 4WD for a few months now and have been continuously changing my mind. I was fairly set on a 3.0L CRD Patrol however i cant seem to find one in my price range with less than a 100,000kms. Therefore i started looking at late 90's, early 2000 GU N/A 4.2 and non-intercooled TD GU's however they seem quite rare and still fetch high prices with 200,000+kms. Although i understand that is considered nothing for the 4.2. As this is my first 4WD and i will no doubt scratch, scrap and dent it, its not a bad idea to go for something a little older.

I've recently been looking at the 105 series Landcruisers (Standard). Features are essentially the same as the N/A GU (to my knowledge) however its seems i can get a 2005-2006 model for the same price as a 1999/2000 model GU with the same or in some cases less kms. Plus, there seems to be more of them around (Probably explains the price).

Any advice from those in the know would be appreciated? I've read about weaker front diffs in the 105 however there seems to be enough awareness to remedy this.

Td42 has a higher threshold for power mods than the 1hz, however with maintenance both are supremely reliable and long lived, the patrol has a much tougher drive line, particularly the front diff as mentioned and their LSD is much better also, but all of the above can be remedied, I'm a Nissan person but almost bought a 105 a couple years back, we had one at work as an up track car, had bulk km on it but I preferred it over the v8 70 series wagons every time, hugely more comfortable and stable on the road and roomier inside, I really like them.

Gu patrol hands down 200000 kms is nothing on a td42, gear driven(no chain or belt to worry about), big front and rear diffs, easy to modify(turbo back and a little boost), after market parts are fairly cheap. having said that Im a hug fan of the new single turbo v8 land cruisers

Thanks for the replies gents. Im looking at a few 105 series this weekend so that information has helped! If a neat GU pops up in the meantime ill direct some attention to that though i think.

Gu for life but there is 5 Nissan's in my driveway so my point might be invalid :|

Anyone know the cost to replace the timing belt and all assosciated parts for a 105 series Landcruiser?

belt is like $60 from toyota
Might need the tensioner if its old, or you fuck it which is around $180

takes about 1hr to replace if you are taking it steady.

Thanks Mark.g. I haven't bought one yet. I just looked at a fairly rough example which had the timing belt light on the dash. That then led me to do a bit of research into it.
