However the The International Civil Aviation Organisation had not classified it as a warzone or no fly zone for commercial aircraft but said had issued warnings. Should Malaysia have been flying there? Should they of been taking safety precautions due to unrest and acted on their own accord in avoiding the area? Sveral European airlines such as Air France, Lufthansa, BA have come out saying they had already been avoiding the area also.

Saw there was only 23 Malaysians on board, bit weird seeing as its the Malaysian national carrier and actually flying into the largest and capital city in Malaysia.
Either way Malaysia Airlines Is going to take a massive massive hit once again regardless if at fault or not, two major accidents in 4 months with the death of over 500 people and 2 large aircraft lost. I don't know how they are going financially now.

Talking to a few mates who fly for QATAR and there have been heaps of carrier's flying over that area. From what I have read the zone had an upper limit of 32,000feet so if you where flying over it higher than that, legally you are ok as you are supposed to be out of missile range. Of course it's a bit of a risk isn't it but other popular flight corridors fly right over Iraq and other dangerous areas too and passengers don't bat an eyelid.

You would think at 33,000ft you have a nice little buffer but ahhh hindsight is a wonderful thing.. :(

The options I see as to who fired something like that given the complexity of operating it:

- Ukranian military (Ukraine and Russia both have BUKS)
- Ex-Ukranian military pro-Russian separatist
- pro-Russian separatist trained by Russia
- Russian military (already accepted that Russian military have been removing patches/wearing civilian attire since the invasion of Crimea)

Specially flying so close to the restricted zone of 32,000 ft. they were at 33,000 ft that's so damn close. Not sure that if they were flying at 36,000-42,000 ft would of made a difference in this situation however? Those Buks can still reach that high.

A Singapore airlines flight and another were pretty close nearby could of easily been them too I guess, sure Malaysia and Singapore etc run all or a lot of their European flights over that airspace and daily? etc amsterdamn to KL is run daily taking this path? if that is their regular path then they would of been flying over there every day this year. Several airlines did a risk assessment on the route.

If I was doing threat assessment and you applied the risk matrix of unlikely event with catastrophic results I would divert.

Several airlines did including Quantas months ago.

Conflict zone. =threat
Balkins/ Russia nil international governance = threat
Surface to air range weapons = threat
Flight path unlikely to have issue
But what if? If one did go in the air? Whats the likely outcome? = change flight path

Surprisingly easy to see with the naked eye. Even a really crappy pair of binoculars would easily distinguish large detail like number of engines and large areas of colour. Things like registration though, not so much. For a missile to hit a target at that altitude it would need to both be large (for fuel) and sophisticated (for an accurate lock, which it would absolutely need to be able to do).
