I got WA DIFF to rebuild my rear diff with new bearings in my SJ70. For what ever reason it was re-assembled without prior warning the gears were rat shit and told after it was assembled its going to be noisy because the gears don't mesh well. Been driving it the last couple of days and its bad enough I want to drive with earplugs. Wont do it on decel, or accel. Just when you're maintaining speed.. Obviously the only way its going to remove the noise is getting another diff.

However wondering if anyone here has had any luck with an additive to reduce period whine. (no bananas). Im running 80w90 mineral penrite at the moment, not sure if going for a 90-140 or even a full synth will help.

how about give it back to WA Diff and get them to fix it?

Buy new gear set, simple, it's not rocket surgery.

Great service there. "Hmm this is going to be shit. Better bolt it up anyway and tell the owner after the fact, because phonecalls are too hard".

For high quality diff oil you'll be paying over $100. I use Redline in mine and it made it a little quieter over Penrite oil (just silenced a slight clunk when the load was put on/taken off the diff). As others have said, if they're shit gears they're shit gears. A new set will prevent any possible failure down the track (preventative maintenance).

kind of thought as much :/ Ill be calling them tomorrow, just hope they don't want to slug me for another rebuild. Food for thought however. I purchased some of that G70 Nulon Diff/Gearbox additive to see how much of a difference in made. It did quieten it down but no where near tolerable. Dare say the same product in a diff with minor wear trying to eliminate some minor whine it would be a product I would pick back off the shelf again.

Great to hear. That's more like the service that should be offered, cudos to them.

My SJ50 is doing the same thing, and been reading threads on it last few days to work out what to do.

Was it your front or rear diff ? It's only when i'm cruising 50-80km/h it does it. Annoying the shit out of me !

Rear diff, Mal has been very helpful in sorting this out for me. I ended up having to source another diff to steal the gear set from. Mals swapping the gears over and setting it back up up again. I just might be up for another pinion bearing but big woop. Just waiting for it to be redone now as I found a mickey mouse pair of low k diffs in bunbury for 300 coin. Bargain!

Cheers for that. I might hunt around and see what I can find down here too. Was it just worn out or stressed ?

It had a diff locker fitted in it but the old owner must of set it up by eye and so the gear sets were wearing incorrectly. Now its been correctly setup its driving on an area with pits and no case hardening. So its magnified the wear. A diff that hadnt been dicked with would of had a better chance
