Isn't there a guy on here with a race car? There was a thread about it to do with life insurance I think and some financial adviser info popped up.

It took an advisor to tell you this? And you paid for it?

I need X amount of money in Y years; (X/Y)/12 = how much you need to save per month

I don't need advice on saving. I am in a very lucky situation no kids and good income. I have an investment property, own both my cars and own a fair whack of the house I live in. Just looking for some direction in what to do now.

Buy another investment property using equity in your current investment property...

I wouldn't waste my time if I was you, they mostly just try and sell you insurance and work out a saving plan or invest in a managed fund that you could of easily done your self. Sit some cash in an index fund or/and buy some more properties. I would focus on paying your property that you live in off as that's non deductible interest.

The best way is to do your own research and find what investments will suit you.

I did some research recently and decided against buying an investment property for the time being and instead put some money in an index fund. Spread the $$ around somewhat and will invest in another property sometime in the future.

Obviously this is the typical plan, and what i will probably end up doing TBH. I'm just seeking other options as having all your eggs in one basket isnt always a good move.

This was my understanding of what financial advisers did and what most people say. But I assume there are some good people out there with genuine advice.

Warren buffet has said when he dies his money will be going into an index fund and he has chosen a van guard fund.

Vanguard 500 index fund. Ticker VFINX

If it's good enough for him it's good enough for everyone in my opinion.

Just adding to my previous post.
If you want to invest into a local fund that will outperform all markets I would suggest http://www.tridentinvestment.com.au

There are 2 different funds to choose from and it's run by one of the best Australian investors.

I personally don't have any money in funds but if I did it would be the vanguard 500 or the above trident funds.

Not a big fan of managed funds.

Why wouldn't you pick the eyes off of it in direct shares 'where applicable'.

I had a good look at the Trident stuff after you linked to it when I asked about stocks a little while ago. I chose Vanguard for 2 reasons. Less initial buy in (5K vs 15K or something) and the variety of funds offered by Vanguard appealed to me.

Trident would probably have been looked at better if I wasn't so fresh to it all and didn't want to drop 15k without really knowing how it all worked etc.

Less risk with managed fund. I'm not sitting all day on a computer watching/making trades. Managed funds are.

Managed funds are easier for sure, there's also a subconscious/calming element about them being managed by someone else as well.

But less risky is an interesting assertion especially considering trading software available in the market place today.

I think that we also need to add that managed funds can be less stressful 'possibly due to the above variables', as I've seen many a people go nuts watching daily/hourly movements; but then again with a proper strategy put in place this can be somewhat alleviated 'e.g risk will never be eliminated only somewhat managed.'
