scored, well thought I scored a cheap late model macbook pro of the interwebs as it was locked. Simple, I thought.. format the drive? take the bios battery out? HAHAH .. fucking macs.

its a mid 2012 model, so it has an EFI password on it which is stored on the atmel? chip. for mac to repair it they first have to verify its not stolen and secondly have to send away for a one off bios flash, firmware type thing that they put onto the mac with a special im a mac fucking tool.

Now, I cant vouch for the mac itself, it came from overseas so im reluctant to giving it to the store and end up losing it.. have done a fair bit of research now and not really getting anywhere..

anyone had a crack at this? have a crack for this?

Sounds like you're screwed, might have to bite the bullet, tell them you bought it online and hope it hasn't been reported stolen.

If it's a PIN it will look like this:

If it's a password it will look like this:

If it's a PIN it's almost certainly a stolen laptop. If it's a password taking it back won't help because you will be required to provide photo ID and proof of purchase at the Apple store. The only options you have:

1. Give the Apple store a try.
2. Look for a USB based removal tool on eBay, but pay close attention to what will work and what wont.
3. Install/solder a new EFI chip with the original firmware from the model of Macbook.

Again, good luck!

Try your luck at the Apple store then as it hasn't been locked remotely from iCloud.

cheers man, didnt realise that. So is it still a bios type password then? I assume it must be as it still comes up without the HDD in

edit: 2 years on and still no easy workaround, must say im impressed!

Yep. Command + R during boot -> Utilities -> Firmware Password Utility.
