Hi everyone, I'd appreciate it if anyone can give me advice on the following matter:
We live in a relatively well behaved street. Our family is always well behaved with no loud music ect. Our next door neighbour who is in his 60's has moved in as of 2 years ago and has retired.
Since then, he's used power-tools and made noise starting from 6 in the morning until 7 at night ALL WEEK in all of this time. I have gathered he must be running a business making that much noise.
What makes it even worse is that he is building a cubby house/little shed next to the fence parallel to our back door.
In the last week I cannot enter my backyard without him looking over the fence on the cubby/shed looking at everything we do, such as taking our rubbish to the bins or even sitting out the back.
Two weeks back as I arrived to my house I noticed the neighbour had mowed their lawn but also MOWED OUR LAWN a lawn mowers width right to the roots, next to the fence right to our garage! Despite our lawn looking well prior to this incident.
As I type this he is grinding away and banging on something, so I apologise for the long winded post, what can I do legally?

Have you tried having a chat with him?

Yes, his English is not the best and doesn't seem to care about the surrounding neighbours getting affected.

Put some fake security cams pointing towards his backyard on your roof, when he comes to complain explain to him its the same as him looking over your fence pingpingpingping
Saying that it is a heap easier to get along with your neighbours than to start going back and forward trying to out do one another.

So hes building things and mowing your lawn? Do you have a car with a loud exhaust? IDK seems like an old guy just trying to do something with himself, maybe try and get along with him, grab some beers and offer him a hand with the cubby?
Getting to know your neighbours, especially the old blokes who are retired is the best way of sorting any problems.
>inb4 he is on oldguysforums.com whinging about the young bloke next door who never asks him how the cubby is going when he looks over the fence to say hi and never thanked him for mowing his lawn.

1. You can only use noise making power tools between certain hours ( check you councils website for the hours )
2. Check he has council approval to build what ever he is building
After doing this contact the council and the ranger and make it thier problem
I'm with SircatmaN.. make friends with the old boy, find out what he's up to and maybe lend him a hand.
Then when you start your noisy car up, he probably won't say anything about it either.
Buy him a ticket to China on Malaysian Airlines

Befriend him. He may have a good looking 18 year old granddaughter who visits him often.

I don't recall doing anything to anger him..
My car still has the standard exhaust and I drive it twice a week, thanks to public transport.
He didn't mow the entire lawn, just a mower length and I'm guessing on the lowest setting. There was no need to damage it as it's always maintained regardless.
Just don't think it's ok for him to wake the whole family up at 6:30am on a Sunday!
Shouldn't have to suck up to him just to get some peace and quiet.
Thanks to those trying to genuinely help, but some of those replies made me lol.

I must admit to having a small giggle at your misfortune if this is your only complaint after him living next door to you for 2 years...
Lucky you dont live next door to me.. Otherwise you'd have to put up with this type of "rowdy" behaviour.

I say go and have a chat to the old bloke while he's building the cubby and find out what he's up to.

Read the whole sentence.
Try the friendly chat, if that don't work, start grinding shit at 8pm as close to his bedroom as possible, he's probably in bed by 7pm most night being old, so keep him awake and he'll be too tired to be up at 6am the next day making noise...

Maybe he's an ex Firey and was just maintaining the fire breaks.
But seriously, just go have a chat with him on a Sunday and find out more about him and just let him know about your issues.
If this doesn't work, burn his house down.

I'm with all the others, have a chat with him first a. Nd see if it can be worked out. No need to start calling in others when a chat may be all that you need.

Have a chat to him, explain the situation. You have a right to peace and quiet in your own house, If its still happening call the cops/council. Fuck putting up with that shit your whole life.

Does he have any fruit trees, sneak over in the middle of the night and start injecting mercury into the fruit.

yeah just tell him not to be a noisy prick before 7am, I agree I would be pissed if someone built a cubby house where they were looking right over my fence.... should just put something high up against the fence so they cant see over lol.

Walk around your back yard naked. Do some squats and lunges in direct line of sight of the new cubby house. If he looks over the fence be really, really friendly and try strike up a conversation while your nude. Don't be shy to adjust or scratch your junk. He might change his mind.
