Just chasing some info and I'm not keen to join a new forum to ask as I know there are plenty of guys here who are knowledgeable with these engines.
Does the early L76 in the VZ commodores using an auto trans use DOD?
Are there any differences in the VU and VY LS1s? Also interested in the changes made to eliminate the piston slap the early VT and VU LS1s were renowned for.
Cheers

use a good smelling oil, so the piston slap makes you feel good. what ever galvsport uses smells good through my ls

All L76's have the DoD gear, the L98 is the sister engine that doesn't have it. There might be minor changes in the LS1 between the VU and VY, there were a good few years between them so minor updates are possible (for instance correct sized pistons which I'm about to get to...). Certainly nothing major though. Piston slap in the LS1's was from bad piston to bore clearances IIRC. To fix that = new pistons and rings.
From VY onwards all LS powered Commodores used LS6s, not LS1s. So you could probably search the differences by comparing the two. :)

Evman am I correct that the L76 is the 6ltr used in the late VZs?.. Ive read that the DOD wasnt used by holden here but only in the US GM L76s I take it this is false then?

DOD wasnt operational on Aussie L76s until MY09 VE with the auto then changed to L77 at MY10

DOD only activates at cruise like freeway speeds and seems fairly unintrusive but a lot of people seem to remove it. I think it becomes an issue when doing serious engine mods.
Not many issues with the VZ 6.0 that Ive come across :)

Only need 1 LS as opposed to 2 JZs

Manual VZ's should have the L98, autos definitely had the L76 (although it wasn't functional, purely through programming). If modding an L76 it is highly recommended the DoD gear is replaced with standard gear (there's not much, lifters and such). If you can get an L98 instead then get an L98 any day over an L76. DoD is a flat out waste of time, it gets like 10% better economy at cruise or some rubbish. It's great tech in theory but not in reality. Apparently they only used it in autos because the driveline vibrations during 4 cyclinder operation were better absorbed through the torque converter or something like that.

Pretty sure some VZ sedans had L98 aswell (Brendons one)

Sorry I should have clarified that. It was only the very last run of VZs that got the L98/L76 (Holden prefers to only upgrade one thing at a time in case something isn't right, which is also why the first run of VTs got the 5L). The only VZ L98 that I know personally is a Thunder, so I can't confirm or deny that it was only them. I was under the impression it was all manuals, so it might be worth calling a service centre and asking the service manager?

Damo from my research for choosing an engine. I found the l76 is fine with the dod lifters as long as you don't try to rev them harder than the std rev limit. Which was 6200 if I remember correct. And if your goin a tune and cam the lifter gear must be replaced.
The engine I brought is a l76 from a vz 6 speed. Dod gear there just no connections to the solenoids. Was a fair bit cheaper than a l98.
You buying a new tow car? Heard you got chopped up the hill into collie.....

What you looking for? My LS1 has been bulletproof and pulls stupid hard for tune and catback only.

Admin how do I like and dislike Clevos post at the same time please.
Ricey Im looking for a 'new' ute.. but im thinking a VY/U auto is going to do the job fine and I will pick up a better example for the moneys.

VY dash is lightyears ahead of the VU
My bad, VY onwards had LS6 manifolds, pistons and used an LS6 block which have slight differences to help oiling issues. SFA difference between the two though.
So in other words. They're the changes to stop early LS piston slap.
Was supposed to quote Ricey, my mistake.

Not worried about the tow rating then?
Braked towing on any of the holden SS utes is SFA. I presume its because of the IRS but I still can't figure out how they work it out. I have towed close to 3000kg braked with a friend on a VU ss ute and it towed it no problem but its official rating is 1200 kg braked I think vz/ve is 1600 kg. Unless the 1 tonne ones are better?
EDIT: Turns out a normal vu ute is 1600kg and the SS doesn't get 1600kg until vz

It's possibly to do with chassis flex? The regular Holden utes don't have a full chassis, all Ford utes do.

SS can be 2200kg with hd towbar and trans cooler.. will put in a compressor and load assist bags in the rear coils...
...and buy a lighter trailer abit later ;)
