So there was a post on this quite a while ago, but it was before LAMS was introduced. I was just wondering if someone could outline what are the steps needed in order to get your R-E license, given that you already have a car license?

My understanding is that you apply for the learners, pass the theory test and you get given your learners (which allows you to ride under instruction). Now, given that you have a car license, you can simply take a few lessons from an instructor and go ahead and complete the practical test. Once you have done that, you are good to go with your 12month R-E period and once that is up, you can do your unlimited R class license test.

Thanks in advance for all the answers!

Yep, go to the licensing centre do your theory once you pass that they will take your photo and mail you out a learners permit (its a card just like your drivers license only yellow). Have lessons pass get your license and so on.

That's it. Make sure you book a test ASAP though. Spots are hard to come by.

I did 3 lessons and booked a test. When I first booked my test it was a 4 month wait. I phoned everyday to get a cancellation . Go my wait down to 2 weeks.

Pretty sure riding out of class is now an impound offence.

As soon as you pickup your RE you are allowed to obtain your R Class learners permit.

i believe its classed as riding contrary to a learners permit so is a decent fine and possibly cancellation of the permit. But its a bit of a grey area there is so many different stories of what has happened to people and no consistency, some people just get a caution others get reemed and impounded. Same stories for riding out of class.

1. do theory test
2. do lessons or get shadowed by some one who has had RE lic for 4 years
3. do practical test
4. get R class learners permit
5. ride open class bike with a shadow who has had R class for 4 years

I was told by a friend who works at the DPI they release new test times between 3-4pm daily so if you get dates that are in March etc then try during those times and they might have something sooner :)

Remember, if you are teaching someone how to drive (and you are not a licensed driving instructor) you must:

hold a current and valid driver's licence (for the class of vehicle in which you are teaching someone how to drive) for at least 4 years. In the case of instructing a person to ride a moped, you must have held a current and valid driver’s licence for at least 2 years.
Note: a person who holds a ‘R-N’ driving authority (driver’s licence) only issued at 16 years of age and has held that authority for a minimum of two years (i.e. still holds a provisional licence), is authorised to supervise a learner driver holding a ‘R-N’ class driving authority (learner’s permit);
dpi website TL:DR = 4 years of holding the same or higher class of licence
