View Full Version : Can the Public 'Dob in' Hoons?

This is a case scenario that occurred to me the other day:
Lets say that u were doing a burnout through a roundabout, then all of a sudden u realised ur being followed home by some middle aged guy driving an VN Wagon. So you decide to bypass home and take a lap around the block (because u wouldnt want them to know where u live).
If that guy (a member of the public) happen to write down your rego in that time, is ther any way that you could be prosecuted?
-The way i see it is that you cannot, because if there was only one witness, then its basically their word against yours. i think the only way you could get done, is if the guy was a off-duty officer.
Can someone clarify this?

umm..i think if they ring up to dob u in..and he gives ur rego they put u on notice in the computer and after a while if u have many complaints agaist u the piggas might do something about it..

Wats that?
He was a bit of a bastard, he pulled up next to me at a T-junction, yelling 'ive got you, you dickhead'. So i did as anyone would, wound down the window, gave him the one finger salute for about 10 blocks and looked back to make sure he was well and truly pissed off.
but yeah, im interested to see if i get a call.
That was my dad
why would do that to him?

you should have waited for him to go past you & then follow him back to his house see how he likes it when the situation is reversed!
then proceed with nightly lawn digs......
or if he wouldnt go past you , proceed with road rage hahaha & mention how he can tell the cops about a tyre squeal .... but you will mention the kiddy porn on his computer .... i wonder what they would act quicker on.... lol

Bingo. Police are actually wanting people to "dob dickhead drivers in" now - prolly because they're too lazy to get out there and do the job themselves.
But yes, be careful ppls - because thanks to new age technology one can sms the police your licence plate number and what not - and they're going to "follow it up"
Are you shaking in your boots like me?

Had sorta the same thing but i only squeeled the tyres through a roundabout which made some guy follow me for ages and ages when he pulled up in front of me in an intersection blocking my lane jumps out and goes to my window yelling and screaming then pulled out his badge :\ never heard anything about it again, but was just a tad warped, was also on L plates at the time and squeeled cause of doing bunnyhops lol..stupid manuals :( id say what 180xtc said would be close to the truth on what they can do.

i think the single finger salute + driving like Ace Ventura with the head out the window would be enough to get him crying for weeks!

at the end of the day its your word against his..he can say u were doing burnouts and you could make up some story and say that you braked suddenly in front of him to avoid running a red light(like the good law abiding citizen you are)and he followed you home and verbaly abbused you..
if that doesnt work take the officer outside and point out your car and ask the question "do u honestly think a burnout is capable in that car?"
haha no offence towards the rolla

if the guy is dedicated enough he can nail you, but it requires him doing a ****load of work.
ie. photographing the burnout marks, then convincing the neighbours to sign statements supporting his statutory declaration.

Just sign a stat dec back saying that he was acting aggresively torwards you, you were driving at the speedlimit and this guy obviously had something against you hair/rolla/loud exhaust/woman in your car... whatever, make it one word against another, can't do ****.
from my experiances ive been apprently hooning around my streets cops have come to my house a couple of times and had a chat to me about it and told me to just slow down and try not to piss the neighbours off...

AFAIK they have not yet passed the laws to allow you to be busted by the public, even when these go through you must sign a stat dec, so for now your fairly safe..
the stat dec thing is meant to stop dickhead neighbours making false claims, but it'll still happen, law to be abbused no 2589
the answer to ur post is YES the public can dob in hoons but the police cant charge u for it....

he can dob you in and sign a sat dec an say your a hoon and doing burnouts but then wether or not you get busted dont matter cos then the cops got your number plate and everytime they see you they gonna pull you up n follow ect ect hahaha
bottom line .... LOOK BEFORE YOU DO A BURNOUT !!!
i caught a vn doing single peggers around my area last night .... was gonna grab his plate n dob him in but i felt sorry for him after seeing that he had no LSD so i let him off this time :)

basically law states if there is no physical evidence linking you to the crime scene or illedged event then they cannot prosecute. so no tyre marks no cops. but if there were bulk witnesses then game over. this guys is just some ****ed up old **** and gets emo cause his missus aint screwin him nemore. personally i wouldnt worry too much a good lawyer will get you off these types of charges neway.

yes they can dob in a hoon, but the bottom line is they can not charge you without some pretty solid evidence. ie; if 1 civilian saw you do it with no photo evidence, they can't do S**T.
at the worst you may have a knock on the door from the boys in blue if there was a couple of ppl that complained, but then you just deny it and say you might have cut the guy off so he was pissed at you.
moral of the story is; there is a time and a place for everything, and this obviously wasn't the time nor the place :nono: :p

My mate just had a knock on the door from the boys in blue and copped a fine and 3 demerits because over a month ago, a lady got his rego when he did a u-turn and dropped 2nd :)
It was either that or TAKE IT TO COURT and CONTEST it!
thats bull****!!! me and my mates have lost count on how many times cops have come over to give us a "warning"

true that, 'commodore driver' behaviour straight up. how can you expect not to get dobbed in doing that **** in broad daylight. take it...
cant be charged with anything unless there is evidence...tyre marks on the road wouldn't count as evidence either...it would have to be photgraphic/video evidence. If they don't have that then they can't do anything. Even if they had video of you speeding i doubt they could prosecute because they wouldn't be able to tell how fast your going etc. The only thing to worry about is if your doing a huge burnout and someone jumps out with a camera...but thats easily solved by producing enough smoke to block out registration plates ha ha ha
I have been flagged down a few timesby random people too but knowing the above i just politely tell them where they can stick it.

mek your 100% incorrect.
Last nite the police rocked up to my mates house (just as i rocked up) and issued him with a 100 dollar fine for excessive noise, a member of the public dobbed us BOTH in for "street racing" and "burnouts" (id like to see a wrx do burnouts but thats another story). The woman had signed a stat dec and was prepared to goto court. My mate chose to take the fine instead. Hows that for some ****ed up ****

That blows hard.
Lke MMM says...deny everything until they prove otherwise. He accepted the fine and therefore admitted guilt. I'd just tell them that i'd see them in court.
I can't possibly see how that is legal...innocennt until proven guilty and even with that biartch signing a stat dec its still her word against yours. Unless of course you admit it by accepting the fine. It nothing but a scare tactic so they can steal your money.

WTF. Havent people got anything better to do with their time, then to chase 'hoons'. Obviously not! How fkn pathetic! I have never heard of burnouts or excessive noise killing, let alone injuring anyone! 'Hoons' have, will always will be prevalent on the streets, however there are more now then their ever was - due to the increase and maturation of youths. 70% of these know of 'time and place', the other 30% dont (me inclusive). Big deal!
I could think of much more worthy problems these 'public heroes' could be fighting!
If i had a camera directing behind my car, i could provide so much incriminating evidence everyday in order to prosecute c***s. And how often does tailgating often result in accident or injury.
Ok. i did a burnout, it was a stupid mistake, so spank me! But unless it was putting the prosecutor in direct danger, i can see no direct harm in doing so.

there trying to bring a law in that allows people to dob someone in for doing or driving reckless as long as they get the rego. Cause the cops are lazy and they know that there are alot of people who never got to own a modified car so they like to pick on us

Yeh I got warned for excessive noise and asked the cops what they meant as I HAD a quiet exhaust at the time... They said for fishtailing

Pigs are just lazy n are always trying to give out fines. i was in New Zealand recently n it was all over the news that because all the other cops were "busy" they sent a taxi to a call out. the woman that called up was murdered by the time the taxi got there.
