Just serviced a mates Yarris after she complained about a noise... fuck

Car is a 2010 with just under 100k on the clock and im pretty sure its never been serviced, did try some sludge remover before dropping the oil but I scraped about 200ml from inside the oil filler alone, so fuck knows what the rest is like.

Typical lack of general maintenance and the car sounds like shit, but is there anything I can do to try and break down the sludge some more? is it a case of just keep flushing it with the sludge remover and new oil? gonna get very pricey!

Tell her to budget for a complete strip and rebuild.

Failing that, you could try completely filling the engine up with Kero and letting it soak. Completely full, 10 litres or so, and let it sit for a few days. Eventually all the oil sludge will drain to the bottom of the sump.

Remove sump plug, drain, top up with fresh oil, fresh filter. I've done it with an old petrol corolla that was horrible with sludge. Car still runs fine, now has 360,150km's on the factory engine. Uses oil though.

By a cheap cheap shit oil and smash some sludge remover in it, I used to use a small cup of diesel, let it warm up a bit and dump it.
I had an engine with baked on oil, worked after 2 flushes, car ran a treat after that, mind you I serviced it every 3000k's for a while, then spread it out longer.

500ml of ATF and drive for a few hundred kms, or like Brett said cup of diesel in and idle for 15 minutes.

Run the Nulon engine treatment through the cima when I got it, few chunks came out :/

I would go 1/2 diesel and 1/2 cheap oil, let car idle for 20 mins. Then slap in new oil.

^ Done this before and no issues. Just don't load engine. Might be an idea to do the "fill engine to the top with diesel" bit first as well. But make sure after dumping it all you pull spark plugs and turn motor over by hand and then starter to clear out fluid from combustion chamber.

CAT DEO (Diesel Engine Oil) 15W40 works an absolute treat. Had sludge in the Corona motor and just filled it up with this to the correct oil level and ran it for about 1000kms, took the rocker cover off and it was spotlessly clean.

Diesel Engine Oil can work well..

Be careful idling with diesel/kero in oil....bad wear patterns in oil starved engine, better to drive very gentle @ 15-40kmph for 10 mins which will do more washing. Get engine hot first, dump in a litre of diesel and drive.

Be very carefull

Toyotas strainer screens are very fine, the more sludge you break down. The sluge gets picked up by the suction of the oil pump and blocks the pickup causing a hydraulic starve. Will lose oil pressure gradually over the space of 20 mins and will have none, she will sieze it and you will be the worst in the world.

In this case, trying to do the right thing can actually be the wrong thing. I would reccomend remove sump and rocker cover, i get in there with a screwdriver and sacrifice a cheap vacuum and suck it all out. I think you will find the pickup screen already a bit blocked at this stage if its that bad in the cover.

Thanks guys,

the motor looks fairly simple to work on so im not toooo concerned about ripping the rocker cover and sump off. Bit weary about running it with kero or diesel in the oil I have to admit.

There is also alot of blow coming out of the oil filler, enough infact that you could forget about pouring anything down with the engine running, it could almost lift my hat when held over it... :\

I wouldn't run it too much more, you might have dislodged a pile of shit already by servicing it. I'm not sure on the Yaris engine, but some stock engines have a good 20% blowby out the filler hole.
I've never had any issues ever running just a cup of diesel through with some oil just idling to clean a bit of shit out. I only idle the engine as any revving it starts to starve oil feeds and you'll get cavitation and that'll fuck pumps and all, but as Josh says, the toyota strainers are pretty fine these days. Theres probably a good chance the engines worn a fair bit prematurely now, I'd get it sorted as best you can and tell her to trade it in on a new car or stop being friends with her :)
