Should be a fair bit of movement this trade period which is good. Always look forward to seeing who goes where and how it works out.

McPharlin has apparently said him, Sandi and Pav are all keen for next year which is good but probably be the last season for 2 at least of them. Need to do some smart recruiting to cover Pav and McPharlin.

http://www.watoday.com.au/afl/afl-news/rioli-lake-set-to-miss-start-of-season-20130930-2untu.html

Oh good, that nasty little pingpingpingping Rioli is copping a 1 match ban (should be more like 2) for the chicken wing stunts, Lake is copping 3 for his deliberate elbow to the head of Walters, and Suban is copping a few for his face grab on Mitchell (though that looked pretty tame, pingpingpingping wouldn't get off him). Hodge can feel free to shut the fuck up about the bans, his team did play a rather dirty brand of football on the day however the better team still won it on the day. Bring on 2014!

I would have preferred free kicks / 50m penalties on the day, but that is a bit much to ask from the third team on the ground.

Rioli scored from a free kick he received for that chicken wing tackle. That and McPharlins "over the mark" call on Buddy are pretty harsh looking back now. Oh well.

Reports that Swans have offered Buddy 1.5m(ish) a season. Would be a pretty awesome forward line if they pull that off!

I hope Buddy doesn't accept the swans offer.

huggy_b
01-10-2013, 07:41 AM
You have to wonder how the Swans are able to make that kind of offer if it is legit? Even with their cost of living allowance, that would be 2 players out of 40 taking approximately 1/4 of their total salary cap.......

MadDocker
01-10-2013, 08:03 AM
Mumford wont be offered a new contract, Bolton, Mattner & Morton all gone. Would free up a fair bit of space.

We still need one more solid midfielder.

Passage GT
01-10-2013, 08:32 AM
i think it's becoming clear that Sydney have a pretty unfair advantage with the salary cap, if they can offer buddy that kind of money after already getting tippet... it's excessive, with the great culture and management they have in place, along with the budget advantages they'll be a side that is always going to be in the top 8, they'll never drop and struggle anymore like all the other clubs seem to do during the normal cycle.

I dunno about franklin he's had an average year stats show hawks play better without him.

Great player but at the hawks they have been focusing to get the ball to him and teams know it and focus on shutting down buddy which hurts the team.

Fremantle have room in the salary cap for buddy if Lyon thinks he is an appropriate fit, he is a kickett (Freo) after all. McPharlin, Mundy, Pavlich, Sandilands are all veterans so their payments are mostly above the salary cap 30-50%. Pavlich's last contract was worth 1.2 alone, so im interested to see what Lyon has planned for freo as they deliberately didnt max out the salary cap to allow for so much young talent being retained in the future and will be interesting to see where he thinks the major recruiting needs to be. I think our backline is strong without Mcpharlin, Clarke has ruck duties sorted i see centre half forward being a weakness atm with most of our goals coming from 6-7 different guys each week. Mayne, Pav and Buddy as leading forwards and walters, balla on the ball?

Gumbleton apparently wants to be traded to WA, maybe him.

As for Buddy, if it happens then the AFL can get ready for a shitstorm. All this talk about "equalisation", and the 2012 premiers Sydney could end up with 2 of the best KPF's in the comp for next to fuck all. To be honest I expected him to sign with GWS mostly for the money factor, but have always hoped he stays with the Hawks, hopefully he does.

The problem sydney had towards end of the year was their midfield. With Goodes getting injured etc. 2 solid forwards just strengthens the forward line even more especially considering both Mike Pike and Mumford can both catch the ball in the forward half as well.

Wasn't talking about kicking efficiency, I was talking about tall targets.

At one stage the whole forward fifty was dominated by only Michael Walters, At one stage we had Fyfe in there as the Key forward and I dont think Zac Clarke or Mayne can be KP FF's. If Pav would stay in there it would be good but he likes to run around too much and play mid.

Yep, I'm with MadDocker Pyke for the most part and push Tippet into the ruck when required.

When Tippet's in the ruck and Pyke's on the bench Sam Reid and Buddy Franklin should be plenty of height in the forward line for the Swans.

MadDocker
03-10-2013, 09:11 AM
Think he will go well at Freo. He is one of the first tagged players at Melbourne (not saying much...) and gathers 20+ possessions and regular goals. He'll be probably 5th-7th most likely to be tagged at Freo. He uses the ball pretty well. Could replace someone like DeBoer who is tough as anything and plays the defensive forward role well but has iffy disposal.

See what happens. Would have got him pretty cheap anyway.

regi
03-10-2013, 09:27 AM
i dont think freo would have targeted him, but he would provide relief for the other mids and play a different role than at melbourne

J-Pod is out of Geelong and it looks like Paul Chapman isn't far behind.

Although not a long term proposition if the Dockers wants another crack at the big one in 2014 Podsiadly would make a good tall forward target.

Colin Sylvia has been "on the verge" for about the last 5 seasons, you wouldn't want to pay much for him.......averaging 20 possessions a game is pretty low for a decent midfielder (even in a Melbourne team). His stats are almost identical to Matt Jones. Who is Matt Jones you ask? Exactly........

And how Eddie Betts is worth half a million a season has me fucking baffled - he'd be laughing all the way to the bank!

beatle
03-10-2013, 10:59 AM
The buddy deal isnt as rediculous as it sounds.
The majority of the cash will most likely be coming down the track, when a fair few players like goodes will be retiring.
Also, the salary cap will likely be reviewed in 2016 with the TV rights deal. The players association are pushing for more revenue from broadcast going back into the players, increasing the cap.

Skitzo
03-10-2013, 12:10 PM
The AFL may still block the deal.

MadDocker
03-10-2013, 12:19 PM
Bullshit if they do in my opinion. If it's in the cap the AFL should piss off and allow Sydney to pay a 35yo 1.1mil a year.

Torquen
03-10-2013, 12:45 PM
Neg, it'll ruin their playing list in 2020-2022 as they'll have to either pay a player to sit on the side lines around 1.1 pa or they'll have to pay him out (if they let him go due to form/injury) let's just say for arguments sake 3 years salary in one season (i.e. 4 M) which is just under 50% of the year salary cap. Then Sydney will whinge like little bitches as they have to pay their other 35(ish) contracted players with 4.5 M...and then the AFL will have to bail them out. AFL is well within its rights to ensure Sydney can actually afford him if things turn pear shaped towards the back end of the contract.

I think it is a good decision to go for Simpson over Sumich and Burns. Burns will only Coach the way he did under Woosh and Sumich probably could do with a bit more time, from what i've heard he is a great mind, but not a great communicator.

Plus its a good thing where someone else enters the club not having been there, Burns might be a bit lax as he knows the players well, Sumich might be a more concentrated upon for being a former past great than the coaching side of things.

Just listened to an interview on 882 with Adam Simpson and im not convinced but happy to be wrong. Pretty much said that he will be taking a back seat this year and trusting that the board and coaching staff know what they are doing in regards to trade season and plans for next year. He said that he doesn't want to come in with an iron fist and tread on toes nor disrespect any of the work that woosha has done. Nor was he able to pass comment on where the major flaws are or what his plans are to get the team back on track. I would of thought that if you are going to an interview that doing a bit of research and drawing on his last four years as an assistant coach playing against the eagles that he would have a few idea's on area's that need urgent attention to arrest this fall down the ladder.

Torquen

Adelaide, NM, Eagles should all make a move up. Especially with the "grouping" going on in this years fixtures (bottom 6, middle 6, top 6). Probably GC as well but such an unknown. Would get great to see them make the 8.

Dons, Tigers, Sydney and possibly Blues all knocking on the top 4 door.

Port will make the 8 but might not get as far this year with a tougher draw.

Think Collingwood, are the most likely to slip out of the 8.

I usually suck at predicting this sort of thing. It's always tough to call with teams coming out of nowhere and injuries smashing sides during the year.

McEvoy is good at getting around the ground, but his actual ruck work like taps to advantage is shit. For someone not being able to break into the Hawks side, it's not the worst you could have done. Savage is a good player, and will only get better. You still have Hickey who will be pretty good, and with that pick you might go after Longer for Brisbane, or just for a short term fix I believe Darren Jolly wants to keep playing. Saints must have something in mind.

Tanking before the season starts?

But in all honesty, virtually most of their midfield will be gone at the end of next year. Lost Goddard last year. Montagna and Dal Santo are looking to leave for some success. Hayes will retire, only has one season left on that dodgy knee. Riewoldt is 32 next year, Jones and Ray are in their late 20's.

Only shinning light from 2013 was Jack Steven.

They have Pick 3 in this years Draft and maybe looking for another top 5 pick next year to rebuild after the years of 2009 and 2010. A bit like they did in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

In those Drafts they picked up Riewoldt #1, Koschitzke #2, Ball #2, Clarke #5, Dal Santo #13, Goddard #1.

Hawks did well picking up McEvoy, especially with Bailey retiring and were interested in Longer, but he would still need a bit of time to develop.

Saints need a good rebuild, a few more earlier draft picks help as they won't be playing finals anytime soon, hopefully the team develops together to be alot stronger down the road. Dal Santo will be leaving, Hayes and Riewoldt will be gone in 3 years tops.

Last year Dockers pulled Danyle Pearce from nowhere, year before it was Ross Lyon... Might have a secret signing again who knows.

Giving up 16, Mello, SCOS & Hannath for 1-2 years with Riewoldt seems pretty crazy. 16 & Mello I would do. Need Hannath and SCOS imo, especially with McPharlin & Sandi coming close to retirement.

If Michie can get his body right he should chop up at the Dees. He's a quality player.

Dockers will not try for Riewoldt.

More than likely, Gumbleton will be in the picture. Mitchie gone for pick 54 which might seem useless to most clubs, where as Gumbleton has been looking to leave and did a medical for Freo, Essendon having bugger all picks in the next 2 years will struggle to unearth new blood, but there might be a diamond in the rough at 54.

This years draft is pretty shallow, anything from 30-40 onwards would have to be a speculative pick or get lucky with someone with a big scope for development. No way will Essendon take 54 for him, 33 maybe which is being mentioned. They are complete pricks to try and work with, Crameri wants to leave to come to us, he's out of contract so he could just go PSD but they are still holding out for more than 22 which is being offered. Worse is they are known for it, so don't expect it wrapped up all that quickly. Things will move slightly quicker with free agency ending tomorrow, but this 3 week thing is clearly too long

Well Black retired today. Great champ of the modern game, will be sorely missed.

But the question is, will Carlton trade either Gibbs or Murphy to GWS for both picks 1 and 2? IMO I think it would be a great trade, pick up a quality young forward Tom Boyd to replace Waite and a young midfielder for the future. Maybe James Aish or Josh Kelly?
Since they have Daisy now Carlton can afford to trade one of them, especially both can't handle a hard tag. And GWS need a quality experienced mid.

Well played GWS securing pick 2 for Dom Tyson (plus a few other draft swaps)! That trade came from nowhere really.

Pods to Adelaide......surprising, be interesting to see how he and Taylor Walker fit together
Chapman looks like he'll be at essendon, fait acomplie after Thompson was announced coach really.
Finally Dal has gone to NM, interesting to see what St Kilda get compo'd
essendon have now entered the chase to get Billy Longer with St Kilda and Hawthorn, weird choice given they have Bellchambers and Ryder rotating with Joe Daniher in the wings.

Been an interesting trade "week", albeit a little long winded IMO.

Pick 54 is all that Gumby is worth IMO... And that's what has been offered(allegedly)... and I think that Essendon would be silly to pass on it.. They'll hold out as long as they can, but I reckon it will get done.

Yeo appears to be a pretty much done deal to WC as well... although a fairly complicated one!

That's his biggest issue, he has all the potential in the world but hasn't really dominated or strung a bunch of games together - what is like 10 or 12 games in the last 3 seasons?

Its a bit of a gamble.........but pick 54 is a bit of a throwaway pick.

I don't think we will be much chop this year (St Kilda), but hopefully not wooden spooners!!

I didn't get a chance to do it last year, but for anyone on BigFooty there is a group that does the $10 challenge - basically place a $10 bet on any AFL game that's paying odds of $1.20 or better for the win, then keeping rolling over your winning (in whole dollars) each round for the entire 22 rounds. If you average a return of $1.20 and pick 22 winners I think you'll turn your $10 into $550, if you can average around $1.30 then its into the thousands of dollars. Best I've done is til round 14 - it was tempting to take the money and run!

Will see how far I get - I'll post my bets in here.....

They didn't really recruit that well, they helped their depth in the mids a bit, they only player they recruited for their forward line is Andrejs Everitt and he couldn't get a game at the Swans, 2 high picked ruckman breaking even with Lobbe and no crumbing forward now either. I just hope for their sake Waite stays fit and injury free, or it'd be curtains for kicking goals.

On another not though, how big was a few of Watson's Torpedos? One went a good 5-10m past the centre.

Evoboycorey

Watson and Mitch Robinson single handedly lost the game for us. Lost all momentum in the second quarter when Watson played like a potato and let Westhoff run a muck.

Also Robinson just hacking the ball forward - How is that acceptable from a coaching perspective? He resulted in at least 40% of our turnovers. Not to mention his aim between the sticks....

When your forward line is reliant on a guy by the name of Jarrad Waite - you know your football club is fucked :)

All jokes aside, I think a lot of people under-estimated Port's ability (and over-estimated Carlton).

GC is clearly Richmond's bogie team. You would be pretty disappointed as a Richmond support - as much as GC improved, Richmond shouldn't have lost if they were serious about making an impact in September.

Swans/GWS was (as already noted) a massive shock. Didn't see the game, but Swans shouldn't have lost. Yes, it is only round 1, but similar to above, a team aspiring for top four shouldn't lose to a club such as GWS.

Dockers were epic, and Collingwood were woeful. I was expecting a 30 point margin, but Collingwood were absolutely destroyed.

Looking forward to Eagles game this weekend - midfield battle will be good, but Eagles should put them away comfortably.

Top 8 for me:

Fremantle
Hawks
Sydney
Essendon
Geelong
West Coast
Port
Richmond

Brownlow: Fyfe
Coleman: JK (WCE)
Premiers: unfortunately, Freo

Close between Richmond, North, Carlton, Adelaide and Collingwood. Its amazing that any one of these teams may miss finals this year (infact, I think the only certainties are Freo, Hawks and Sydney, 4 - 8 is anyones guess).

I got off to an ok start with the gold coast and freo winning their games, but ended up with having a stinker after Carlton and North, then Melbourne let me down.

Round 1 is always such a punt though, how'd everyone else go?

Port @ 1.72 is even more enticing.

Port into Geelong is money for jam.

Im on Adelaide, they killed port in the Nab Cup and the way port struggled to stay level with Carlton, i think Betts is going to have a field day.

Best Value i think is GWS against the Saints.

Going to do my tipping drunk every week. Must have been smashed...

Results for Round 1 of the AFL 2014 season brought to you by DT Workforce Footy Tipping.
YOUR TIPPING:
This week you tipped 8 winners.

Tipped Melbourne instead of Saints... No idea how I managed 8 haha.
Did you notice you got the EXACT margin too? Yeah, everyone who played on footytips.com.au got the first 4 games correct for free, and the tipping margin as exact as their website was down for a day and a half and many missed out on tipping so they gave everyone the win and margin.
So your 8/9 was probably a 6/9. Win win for all though.

This explains the giants tip :P

Hehe, yeah, I realised when i looked at our comps ladder and saw EVERYONE had 0 points, apparently an email came out from FT.com.au but i never saw it. I thought my year was over already because I didn't tip Freo, GC or GWS. 8/9 also :P

How the fuck did he get off? simple, consistency. Surely you've watched http://www.afl.com.au/video/2014-03-24/charged-round-one-week-two and would have heard that every single tripping charge from last year was given a reprimand.
Your hate for West Coast is strong :D

In saying that I don't think anyone should get a week for that, in the scheme of things it was weak as piss

How many games to AFL teams play in a week?
Why don't they just say one game suspension?

EDIT: lol just watched the clip - what a bunch of fucking pussies. We need to stop overanalysing the game and just let it be.

Not sure if serious? The guy is a hack - had he made any one of the billion shots he sprayed last night you may have won the game.

On current form (and form over the past two seasons), Vickery > Waite.

Heaps of people think that about him for whatever reason, including a bunch of Freo fans. He's an experienced, tall defender who spoils well and does his job. We don't have a heap of better options lining up to take his place.

Not a great kicker, doesn't do anything flashy but doesn't usually get pumped either.

With Fyfe and Barlow out it was always going to be tough, i almost thought it was a replay of the saints game last season in the first half.

Put a few dollars on the Hawks when they were underdogs, also put them in a multi - Hawks 40+ with Port 40 + @ 30.16, hope Port smash the roos, 10 squid to 300 would be very nice.
