I need a GPS for my car, I don't want a rubbish one, but then again I don't want top of the line stuff, I need it to be at least a 5" screen, that's about the only prerequisite I have, that and lifetime maps if possible.
Best bang for buck really :)

TomTom GO 500 or 600 (5"/6" screen sizes) http://www.tomtom.com/en_au/products/car-navigation/go-series/
I just bought one for my wife and will buy one for myself shortly to replace my Navman. The interface is far superior to Navman or Garmin IMO and they can slave to your smartphone for live traffic updates advising of delays along the route etc. We used one in Europe earlier this year and found it to be excellent.
Touchscreen intuition, search locations etc - all very logical.

Samsung S4.
I have a "copy" of the tomtom pack for australia. Requires no jail breaking to install. $5 vent or glass mount a nd $2 cigarette power cable.
Maps installed to phone, voice guided. Done. No need for fancy gps as with maps installed there is little to no data use.
Add in voice activation and you're set.
Has a 5in screen (aligned vertically mind) and you can snap chat sluts on it.

Ewwww Samsung !
That also should have been mentioned, I don't want to use my phone, it does have a 5" screen also, but rather a dedicated unit.

Garmin Nuvi ( or how ever it is spelt). Glass screen. 9mm thick. Fits in pocket for when I travel. Easy to use. Good functions. Maps all come from government so shape file data is the same.
Only 2 manufactures that do the software spatial data interrogation. Either way get what works for you. I like Garmin and Garmin just buys the data.

Wish I hadn't of followed this advice, has about as many features as Google maps, for $240 !
Fuck I hope they upgrade the software to look better than a black and white dull POS, fucking Junk !

That pretty much sounds like it looks the same as the android version... and because it's hacked you just copy/paste new versions of maps when released.
If I have an older GPS, could some help me "restore" American maps and software on it?

Something sounds wrong there, is it night mode permanently or something? I've found it to be a great unit.

No during the day it has minimal colour, except for when in the city it shows the buildings, which is a distraction, the cheap chinese GPS/head unit we used to have showed lane guidance without having to put a destination in, had more colour and gave more info without looking cluttered. Tom Tom have decided to give you nothing to "clean" it up a little.
The good thing is, in 2 years they would have released the full working firmware for it with all the stuff they should have done originally and it will be great, albeit dated !
I have a Garmin and a Tom Tom unit.
I prefer the Garmin for the interface.
Edit: And I just saw that you've bought one. Sorry for the late input. :/

Weird... I like mine, and its got plenty of colour out in the sun on the dash. Taken me through the Pilbara all this week. But it's not like my old TomTom GO XXX that cost $900+ and made calls and had phone directory but the screen shat it after 6 yrs.
Such is life
