Its going to be used as my daily drive/weekender camping 4x4 car. So im more after a better idea on what to look out for when i go car hunting.

Bulk oil usage
Injectors chew out with shite fuel, $1k + each
Second hand market flooded with ex rentals / mining and hard to pick sometimes.
hey , i have a 2007 ex miner and my friend has a 2010 ex miner. Neither of ours has ever chewed through oil and iv had mine for over a year now. Injectors on the earlyer model(mainly 07) have been known to fuck out injectors but mine hasnt had any issues yet. When you go looking especially at ex minors just check under the floor vinyl and door seals for rust, and also down the chassis rails , i just ran a hose down my rails and washed all the red dirt out. Also check behind the bull bar for rust and under the tray. Other then that my car has been fault less except both of our cars ( mine and my mates) both threw the same engine light code which indicates the wastegate or boost valve is blocked or something along those lines , but it was easy fixed by blowing out the valve and hose.

starter motors and turbos are a pingpingpingping to change also.

That's not an issue with the vehicle, that's an issue with the fuel. Can't use diesel from the gravity fed tank out on the farm on any common rail diesel engine.
Also they aren't 1k each if you shop around.

Thanks guys. This has all been good. Looking at a chip, exhaust and 31s or 33s then it should be a pretty well rounded 4by. They don't seem that bad on fuel for a big ute either.
With the injectors, I guess there are problems with every car out there, luckily that's not such a major thing.
mine has 2" , 33's and an exhaust and i can get 500-550 to a 80L tank on everyday driving

Have an "ex miner" for sale in the for sale section around mid-to-end of September. Used for exploration in its early life, now just a company car for the director/exploration manager. PM me if you're keen.

Or fuel from country tanks, or fuel when touring or or or. Its a sensitive injector, and still expensive if you have to replace 8 of them. Massive thread on LCOOL about bulk issues.
Just a thing to keep in the back of your mind, a diesel is not cheap to maintain.

Im on my second one now. I bought the first of them in 07 or 08 and mine consumed bulk oil when you towed anything heavy. It was fine around town though. I did some work up north and ended up replacing the fuel filters very regularly but never had any issues. I think it was the only new car i have ever had where i havent had a warranty claim of some description!
The one i have now i ordered with the factory diff locks. They are electrical opposed to things like the arb ones which are air activated. Supposedly the electric ones have fewer moving parts. Its a rotary switch on the dash just behind the lhs of the steering wheel.
I dont know if you have done your research on the spec levels but there are 3 levels. Workmate, gx and gxl. To go from workmate to gxl new is only about $4k but you get carpet, bucket seats, one piece windows, electric windows, flares, mag wheels.
I think the dash upgrade came in about 2011. Exactly the same mechanically but a much nicer dash and a cup holder!
Im tempted to flick my current one but the new one isnt due till at least 2016 and it still feels solid as.
If they ever bring one out with the running gear i.e auto and twin turbo diesel out of the 200 series i will camp out to get one!

from what research I have done, the gxl is a bit more than $4k difference in the used market haha. for my budget, the 2010 workmate is pretty much the best I can afford. im not too fussed with carpet and power windows. central locking is easy enough to install too.
Do you mean the upgraded dash between the 76 and 79 series?

I think you are getting confused there, he means the face lifted dash that came out around 2011.
The numbers refer to the body, 76 is wagon, 78 is troop carrier and 79 is ute. So all the utes 2007+ are VDJ79.

do the 76 series have a lot of legroom? Id love to get one but not being able to get an auto is putting me off, being 6 foot 6 i need quite a bit of room to drive a manual especially with work boots on lol.

the 76 series has a bit less legroom than the 79 series, but its not too bad. Im 6 foot 1ish and i fit in both easily, they have a foot rest too, so work boots fit piece of piss.
