So I got this for the Mrs:
http://www.harveynorman.com.au/asus-f550dp-xx008h-laptop.html
She works at Hardly Normal so got it for way less than that, so winning already.

The spec according to both Asus and HN say that the GFX chip is a Radeon HD 7470.
It's been a while since I looked at gfx cards and even longer, but I thought what the hell, that'll let her play The Sims and that's all she wants really.

Before buying I checked what the chip actually was (since HN have a great habit of mis-labelling everything) and Windows 8's Device Manager says that the chip is actually a Radeon HD 8690M.
We've reset to factory default settings (it was the demo model) and it still says that.

A quick google says that this laptop has *NEVER* come with this gfx card. I've got no idea what to think.
Anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

Heh =p
Well, we got the box it came in and it confirms the model number, and did a factory reset... so there's no possibility of fudging the numbers.
I know very well that Asus love to make over 9000 different 'sub-models' and release them around the world, but they're usually findable with enough googling...
Just can't quite fathom what would happen to make this little frankenstein.

Is 8690m better or worse than the 7470m?
I can never keep up with gfx cards, I'm getting too old and they change way too quick.

7470M is used as a "crossfired" card. It's odd, it's also EOL I believe (Jun 12 rls) ... probably just using the 8690M now as its similar priced and better and cbf changing all their marketing info for older models with the old card in it still.

Pop the back cover off and see if its an expansion card, as many higher spec'd notebooks these days have what is known as an MXM slot, which is more or less a mobile version of a PCIe slot.

If this is so, it would be an easy upgrade over what would have been standard.

Crossfired? MXM slot? You mean to say we can crossfire/SLI gfx cards in laptops now?
...holy shit, I AM getting old...

Thanks guys, I'll pop 'er off tonight and have a look.

more likely the chip was just found on the floor and just thrown in the mix

Try a different program to check the hardware like everest or SIW, as Device Manager can sometimes lie.
If it turns out to be true, score!
