Looking to finally piss off XP and have a few questions given that Im not that knowledgeable on Windows OS. I guess Windows 7 is the best option?
1: Will it run fine on my Dell Dimension 9100, 3.0 dual core, 4g RAM, Nvidia 9800GT without stealing resources that would normally go to gaming on XP
2: Cheapest place to get it
3: Most suitable version for general home use, PC is mainly used for games and web browsing.
Many thanks.

1. Change graphic settings if it struggles, dropping Aero is a good start for a gaming rig.
There is a performance setting box that allows you to trade off eye candy for speed.
2. I get OEM builders versions from either Austin or MSY, about 90-100 bucks when I bought it years ago, maybe cheaper now
3. Home, or ultimate if you want to pony up more cash... Home is enough IMO

Can anyone go in and get the builders versions? Any places open today?

I hated Win 8 until I got Start8, best thing I ever did was forking over the 5 bucks or whatever it was.
I never use the non desktop side of things, the app section is fucking dumb, even with my touch screen laptop.
Never had an issue using just the desktop like normal windows.

So is there an option on W8 to use it like a normal desktop OS or is tablet mode all there is?
Brett_J

Yep can use it like a normal Desktop without even going near the app side of it :)

Without a doubt there are some annoyances with windows 8 the main one being shutting it down. Other then that once you roll to desktop and install a start add on(if you have to) its windows 7 on steroids. My laptop boots in 3 seconds from cold has never crashed and I have been using it for about 9 months now.
Vista when first released was a total dog, memory and disc hungry like an OS has never been. Windows 8 is the total opposite of this.

Showing your lack of computer knowledge here, its a lot faster on 8 than it was on xp.
Might even try 64bit as its compatible.

100% Correct,
Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 Windows 8.1 (Released on the 26th of last month)
Windows 8.1 is a desktop version of Windows 8 (ala. Windows 7? LOL) for PC's and users that want the normal windows experience instead of an OS made for a touch screen only.
You are able to download 8.1 from M$ and upgrade your current, if you have sadly purchased a PC with Windows 8 pre-installed, or made a regretful purchase as Ricey has just done.

Just grab a shitty AMD chip like I just have, under $400 for 6 core chip, 8GB Corsair "vengeance" RAM and a gigabyte AM3+ board to tie it together - reuse my old SSD/HDDs/vid card/PSU/case.
CPU is an FX-6300 and kicks the shit out of my old core2duo E8400 for multi threaded games like driver san francisco.
Couldn't justify price/performance of the i5 chips, plus already have a GTX 460 vid card for 1920x1080 LCD native res.
Still, porn only needs a Pentium4 to run hahaha. Unless maybe it's full HD X-Art or something, but I digress.

The fucker booted as well before I reinstalled my OS on my SSD.
Win 7 is a fighter I'll give it that. Mobo brand remained a gigabyte but I went from Intel Core2Duo based system to an AMD FX series and it still loaded up without a reinstall, at least to desktop, to my amazed horror.
Exact mobo I got is a GA-970A-D3P in case you go looking. I got wholesale prices from Altech but you could get similar prices retail if you shop around I bet. I made the decision in ten minutes on Friday that I was having a new PC for the weekend and got it all from one place on the way to a job. Check the usual netplus/austin type stores that have freakishly low retail prices.

why wouldnt it boot? Windows 7 has basic drivers built in, as long as it is not an OEM type install it should boot fine when hardware is changed.
MSY is generally the cheapest shop too.

Yeah it's clearly far smarter than XP was in regards to drivers. It would have been BSOD scenario going across chip vendors and chipsets like that. New sound card or video card sure, but not motherboard. As it was it had the same video card but still reverted to basic low res.
No way I wanted to use the thing though, booting or not.

The drivers already in windows for the hardware are expecting the old motherboard and it's northbridges, southbridges and audio processors etc being a specific device.
When it tries to load the drivers while booting on a brand new motherboard, more often than not it will crash windows on boot (bluescreen)
To get around it would be to trueimage backup the drive without drivers and restore or uninstall the old motherboard drivers if the original system is still functioning.

Why buy Start8 or other menu replicators when 'Start Menu 8' is completely free (even for commercial use) and does a remarkable job? :)
Upgraded to 8.1 from 8 just the other day, noticed a significant increase in performance and the stupid Metro UI is not as invasive as it was. Highly recommend the upgrade to anyone using Windows 8.

It reviewed the best when I did a search, and it was 5 bucks, hardly bankruptcy claim material.

I'm holding off upgrading until I'm certain any issues regarding 8.1 are negligible. Was one reason why I used Windows 7 for my recent build.

8.1 has a release of end of August. TBH the current 8.1 is lacking, IE11 has Huge potential but the spec needs to be confirmed.
IE11 finally dropping legacy IE support and will be rocking WebGL. Also comes with a bundle of tools for Developers. Will be the first time IE rivals chrome/firefox in a long time.
That said I see no reason for consumers to go 8.1 its more an enterprise release.
