Sparky question

Hopefully someone can chime in..

I have sets of outdoor party lights in a string, 240v powered. I plan to put 40W globes totaling 400W (10).
Since they will be Edison type retro bulbs, I want to be able to dim them so the inside wires can be easily seen.

Is there an outdoor dimming solution or do I just buy a Clipsal dimmer and splice the main power cord and house them in a IP57 rated box?

would you not just have your sparky change your current switch plate say from a 3 to a 4 or from a 5 to a 6 gang and therefore have room for a dimmer right where you switch them on and off??
having to run extra cabling to a seperate dimmer location seems like a pain in the ass to me (being that i am a sparky )

most dimmers are good for 450W from memory (could be 350W cant remember).. so you should be ok with just a larger gang plate and a standard dimmer.

the switches are outdoor style, all this is going in the back yard. I haven't seen an outdoor style switch+dimmer.

Do you mean you have a set of 240v party lights that plug into a single GPO somewhere? Or you already have a string of batten holders installed that all switch from the one switch?

Yeh 240v party lights that plug into an outdoor GPO. Got the lights from bunnings.
