Right, most boring topic in a long time, however, I could do with some help.

Bought a Whirlpool front loader 4 years ago, it decided to die on me the other day.
Basically, it seems at it may not be worth fixing, as it was a fairly cheap machine, so I might as well upgrade.

So, what should I look for?
Brands?
Models?

I know nothing about washing machines, I just want it to clean my clothes.
Went window-shopping today, it is a fucking jungle out there.

Ideas, tips?

Anyone here able to help out with a good deal?

Cheers!

Definitely stick with front loader.

Top loader with agitator/bashing clothes on a rock in a stream...... same same....

This ^^^

Take longer to do a wash but are much better for your clothes.

My Grandad tells me hes had this model since way back when its still holding up today aside from a few loose pieces here and there:

Bought this a few months ago for about ~$1,100 - (after extensive research, and reading Choice magazine reviews)

Main requirements were;

* Super fucking quiet. - TICK (except the spin cycle that sounds like a supercharger whining :( )
* Large(r) capacity - TICK.
* Front Loader - TICK.
* LED "time remaining" display - no mechanical bullshit.
* Able to open the front door - even after the cycle has started, and immediately after it has finished - TICK.
* Mrs-approved "it looks pretty" - TICK.

I was very close of impulse-buying one of these today, however, the sales-woman talked me out of it for some reason.

I thought it looked dardy and the idea that it can dry the clothes for me at the same time sounded enticing, however, she reckoned it took close to 3 hours for a wash & dry program, and the clothes were still damp.

Did like the look of it though, think Masters wanted $997 for it, and then there was some sort of cash back from Samsung too.

My Partner and i bought a Samsung washer/dryer combo from good guys, sales guy said same thing about it taking longer for the cycle and being damp after. Took a few cycles and we got the hang of it, upped the drying time manually and clothes now come out dry. Cycle time does take about 3 1/2 hrs though :)

I will join the Front Loader Chorus. We have had a basic Simpson for about 8 years now and it has been brillant. Its a no frills model but washes clothes well about 40-45 mins on quick wash and 2 hours on a standard wash.

Had to replace the door switch at one point was a 12 dollar part and I did it myself.

I have front loader washer dryer and would not recommend it. Drying takes ages, and you can't have a load washing whilst you're drying another load.

Unless you have space constraints go with separate front loader and dryer ( if one is needed)

When I lived with my folks, they had a top loader. Used to shrink the shit out of my clothes and pull them out of shape.

I now have a Bosch front loader and it's fucking awesome.

current washer and drier arent the best so thats my normal wash time anyway (unless i forget about the washer and it sits in there for a while)
Do have space and ventilation constraints so should suit me nicely.

Ended up going for a front loader from Samsung.
Will get a dryer after my Europe-trip, just couldn't justify spending too much coin 9 days before I leave.

read this test: http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/household/laundry-and-cleaning/washing-and-drying/washing-machines-review-and-compare.aspx

And went with the washer that placed third. Hoping it will last longer than the Whirlpool did, 4 years is a disgrace!

Thanks for everyone's input!

was going to suggest, if you have the space, get an ex mine site washer and dryer - forget the brand, do a huge load of washing in around 20 minutes, dry in 30. will be keeping a sharp eye out with this down turn happening. albeit unlikely to see camps closing.

Had a Miele washer dryer. Dryer heated the fck out of everything. Burning rubber smells from elastic on fitted sheets. No lint catcher = shit.

I have the matching Bosch dryer and it stacks on top of my washing machine with a fitting kit, absolutely brilliant.

The only issue we had was i somehow broke the handle on the dryer door.. bought a new genuine one from the UK for $16.

Have the same one in our new share house, a Bosch, and like the others have confirmed - its awesome.

Also have a 5-7 year old Ariston that has been getting the shit kicked out of it day-in-day-out for the last 2 years in our old share house, and thats still running like a dream too.

European is the key I think.

And remember to take the transport bolts out unless you want to chase your front loader out of your laundry's sliding door

Hahahahaha I made that mistake at first, was wondering why the washing machine was trying to launch itself into orbit on its first spin cycle.
