So, just got engaged....

Looking for ideas for an engagement party. No interest in hiring out a hall and having it all DIY, nor a sit down function. Just something nice and cruisy, laid back, a couple drinks on the bar, wandering around mingling, with some food platters for noms.

Going to budget for 100 people MAX, Hopefully more like 50 - 60. Guests aged between 20 & 60. Thinking a max of 5K spend, including a couple grand on the bar.

Something fairly central. CBD, Subi, Mt Lawley, beaches etc.

Most of the places I have thought of have come with a minimum spend of over 5K, so after other ideas.

Cheers

honestly do it at home with some cartons and bottles. A couple of big roasts, a tub of gravy and some rolls. decent sound system and a bucking bull. thats what i did for mine and it was one of the best parties ive had. we had around 150 people.

Might be able to organise something at good sheppard - small place in leedie, good for around 150.. sat nights are redic busy but a Friday could be a goer.

Or back room at causeway - was there for SSICK's bday the other week - it is really nice for something small and cruisey.

Halycon when it opens soon in the CBD - not sure how they will go for functions given it will be busy and new. Was going to do my belated 30th there.

Raffles? Pay per person for pizza platters or whatever, bar tab and pretty easy?

Congrats on the engagement anyway. :)

I hired a boat with 2 large deck levels with the upstairs set-up for dancing. 4 hours cruising was somewhere around $2k plus bond. Food and drinks was on top again. All eskies and ice included in the price as well as a decent PA system. Fits 100 people too.

Best I ever spent. So much so I hired it again for a birthday bash earlier this year and even DJ'd this one.

If interested PM me for details.

If you plan on renting a venue/hall or doing a house party, let me know - I'll look after pretty much as much as I can, its a shitload cheaper than you think :)

Do it at home if you can.

Or if you can be bothered, the C.Y O'Connor pub in Piara Waters. A friend had hers there and it was pretty cool, enough open space.

Would love to do it at home, but a lack of space means we have to look elsewhere. Even both lots of parents houses lack the space unfortunately.

Thanks TJ, will add those 2 to the list of places to check out.

Cheers Man.

Platters bar tab & room hire is exactly what we are looking at. when you start looking at packages per head it starts getting expensive real quick :-/
Another one to check out.

Thanks Cliff. Trying to avoid hall hire etc, as clean ups are never fun... Especially hung over. Will definitely be in contact if we do end up doing that though.

Look into Metro Bar and Bistro. Nice place, shit staff but decent value, you'll fit in under that budget for sure. Though get more food than they recommend per person (i reckon about double) cos ours was a bit short on food in the end.

We had 100-120 for $4kish - thats split $1k food, $3k bar tab, Free Venue hire

We booked out the Soda Sun Lounge on west coast hwy for our engagement party.

It was awesome, up high on the balcony to watch the sunset etc, plus seating inside.

Full bar with waitstaff walking around serving platters of food.

We paid for certain beers, wine and spirits to be available, but people could also buy their own drinks if they didn't like what we provided.

Hired a jukebox and set that up in the corner for guests to choose their own music....had a microphone set up with it for speeches.

Great night had by all.

Why do people insist on putting on wine and beer on bar tabs - the shittest alcohol in existence

Because it's cheaper and easier when you're working on a budget. If your guests want spirits, they can pay for it themselves. Most people are content with free beer and wine.

We can't all be A Grade celebrities.

^^ That.

I'm the one getting engaged. pingpingpingpings should be paying for my drinks, not the other way around. Someone got it backwards at some point and its never been fixed. (/I?)

Not an issue anyway as drink selection will be fairly open (pending venue and whether or not its a straight up bar tab) as I don't drink wine, dislike beer bloat and prefer my not so basic spirits. When the tab runs out, people can fend for themselves.

Keep the suggestions coming either way. Looks like it will be in November as the better half has family coming over from the UK at some stage.

List so far - still need to check a lot out.

Do NOT use the OBH function rooms. They are fucking horrible.
Left bank is an interesting choice.

Agreed - very well fitted out. If have relatives staying in city could make it easy.

Do not do it Sundays, you will want to kill yourself. But the back room is not bad.

LOL at some shit pre conceived hack.

If you are spending 2k on a bar tab, its still 2k if people can get spirits. Or 5k. Or 10k.

The fend for yourself rule still works. To me it just says "yeah I dont really give a fuck about you"

Hugely unpopular drinks as well. Hardly anyone will touch it I'm sure.

If I'm having a party and its an important enough event that I expect people to bring me a present (engagement/wedding/21st/etc), I expect to pay for all the guests food and drinks.. not the other way around.

Maybe its just the Italian in me.. but that's how I've always done it.

I've been to parties where people are on a budget, but they still make the effort to put on food, beers, wines, etc. I don't expect spirits if people can't afford it, but the gesture of putting on some beers and food is more than enough in that situation.

Couldn't agree more. Could be the Asian in me where it's rude to host and not provide adequate food & drink.

Went to one at Raffles not too long ago - great place but it was pretty busy on a Saturday night.

Don't get me wrong here guys, I'm more than happy to put on food and drinks. I just find all those traditions a little weird. I don't expect gifts either, except possibly at a wedding. But that's just me.
Botannica is not on the list at all, never been a fan of that joint, once the sun starts going down.
