Maybe paranoia, maybe not...

Between the hours of 7pm last night & 7am this morning, someone has put a 30cm x 30cm white X on the path right out the front of my house. Looked up and down the street and there are no other markings I can see. Tried to remove before work but it is like thick crayon and hard to remove completely. Got 80% off but still visible if walking so put our bin on it. Will smash it again as soon as I get home to try remove completely.

I have heard rumors before of thieves marking houses to be robbed or steal dogs. Anybody know anything or heard of this happening before?

Told the mrs to keep the dogs inside for today and make sure she sets the alarm if she goes out at all but it's a bit worrying.

Any suggestions?

I dont know what the cross is for but those crayons are oil based so use degreaser to remove it.

If I were you I would contact the council ASAP. enquire if it's them. If its something for road/path/tree works etc (not that it would be, with crayon...) then they will know about it. If they don't know anything mention the bit about houses mmarked for property/dog theft. request they increase patrols...

Haven't tried digging yet. If nothing happens over the next few days, might give it a shot.

Will contact council now. Thanks Chad.
Edit: Council say it wasn't them, rangers will try do a few extra sweeps through the area.

Dog theft was a hoax?

X marks the spot... The spot where you aim your shotgun when sitting in a tree

Go for a walk around the block/a few blocks to see if there are any more?

Could just be a bunch of kids that do it to mess with people heads..... if so, then it's working by the sound of it.

1. Mark pavement outside of someone's house with a white x.
2. Sit back and watch then freak out.
3. ???
4. Profit

Put solvent on it... I don't think degreaser will remove crayon as it's wax based. Anything to harsh and you will risk having a pot hole there in a couple of weeks.
An x is weird. One of authority would do it in day light and not darkness.

Buy some cheap black spray paint and spray over remaining. Will make it hard for whoever put it there to find in the dark.

I'd be sus.... regardless

Can you post a picture of the kerb etc? Is there any development happening close by? It might be a mark for water/gas run in or where there is a datum point... look for a nail/bolt smashed into the road nearby

MadDocker
29-05-2013, 12:30 PM
Nothing like that going on in the street. No other markers or anything I could see around (nails, bolts, cats eyes, other chalk marks etc) as I looked around as soon as I saw it this morning.

I'll get the mrs to send me a photo and post it up. Crudely drawn white X on the footpath right out the front of our house with nothing else around it...

Hopefully it's nothing but seems dodgy.

Footpath got any damage? split? raised from tree roots?

MadDocker
29-05-2013, 12:34 PM
Not raised or massively damaged. Maybe some scrapes or chips out of it but only very minor and wouldn't imagine something that would need repairing. Council said this morning they know nothing about the marking but could be a contractor I guess...

I wouldn't trust what the council says, most of the departments dont talk to each other. Only reason I asked re: damage is if it was dangerous ie, potential to sue they will replace it/fix it. I know the council around here has been going around grinding down all the edges of raised paths so people dont trip on them.

Remove the X.
Paint another X in front of Neighbours house.
Wait a few days and see if they get broken in to.

Sounds like someone playing around.
We did a similer thing many moons ago. Cop lived across the road from my mate. He was a prick. I got given some of the yellow crayon chalk out of a cop car weeks before this and late at night got a mate to lay down and marked out his body on the cops driveway then emptied a bottle of tomato sauce on it around the head area. Looked pretty cool at the time, like a crime scene. Heard him going nuts in the morning haha

Hey buddy ill just chuck down everything I know about this from other people and shit
Ok so the possibilities
1. So a lot of organized runs actually do mark the spot with these xs for the next street to go down , so if your house is in the middle of the street you can probably rule this one out as they usually do it 1 or 2 houses in from the corner also go around the next couple of streets if your house is on the corner and see if you can find any on any other corner houses if so then your fine its just a organized run or cyclist group also they do usually do it mid week to Friday night ..

2. The dog ring , so everyone knows this one ,the easiest way to check is to go down your street and other and find out if they have dogs just stand at the end of the street make a large noise see who barks go to the front if there is anything out of the ordinary , not just a x maybe a tipped over bin ? Bottles in the verge something wacky it could be a mark for the size of your dog ..

3. Break ins , so if this is the case most of the time it's the common one someone's noticed the car you drive , or what ya got in your home blah blah blah . But also this could be a good thing because if your the only person on your street with dogs the x can actually mean they are not going to break into your house because of your dogs .. Normally you can tell if the x is to indicate your a target rather then to stay away because towards the weekend you might see another chalk mark appear if so you are definitely being targeted and should get a few mates to come over for a week or so as play "baseball", have a "hunting week" if you know what I mean

4. Some one is trying to fuck with you , unfortunately some kids have learned what these symbols mean and do this to fuck with your head . This is the worst and I would personally find the runts and break em because its not a fucking joke to take away a families sense of security .

Anyways mate I'm not saying it could be any of these just giving you the heads up on a few possibilities
Sorry if the English is bad my iPhone is fucked and I sent this at work for ya :D
Best of luck

Fuck forgot the other one also if you have a water drain out the front the council could have marked it for repairs and check but they usually do a pink one on top of the man hole but its worth a call to check

It's not just a mark that Joggers put on the footpath when they do group stuff for when the others don't keep they know where to go/stop?

yeah I was just about to say this too.
My dad used to do this. look at the footpath intersections, walkways near your place when you're walking your dog tonight. Should be other symbols like arrows with a circle to indicate direction. Sometimes they do dummy paths, where you guess if its right or left, and only find out after a couple of 100 metres it was the dummy path.
Could be wax crayon instead of the usual chalk because it's wet and chalk could be gone. they usually run on a thursday night IIRC, so that would explain why they marked it on tuesday, checking the route. They usually take turns to plan the route, so one or two guys have already run the route and marked it.

post a pic of the X, I assumed it was a big thick one

I work for a council and I guarantee that if you called up customer service, they wouldn't know 10% of what's going on...

Though, the crayon that we generally use is yellow because it stands out better against concrete.

Put the same x outside every house in the street... That'll fix em!

FWIW, Neighbour had this done outside his house, fire hydrant was being installed. Was in a new estate at the time, so if you are might be the same thing. If not ignore.
