So looking/thinking of getting a bike again shortly. It's been on my wish list for the past few years.
I've got a good lead on a 08 zx10 but I want to make sure I have the correct riding gear etc before i pick it up, so does anyone have any recommendations for any online stores for jackets, helmets etc? I've got a bit of time to look into things before i go ahead with anything.
Cheers

sportbiketrackgear.com are also really good.
HI I'M BRIAN VAN SPORTBIKETRACKGEAR SPORTBIKETRACKGEAR DAWT COMMMM
definately get full leather gloves for the road none of the textile stuff.
I don't think gauntlet gloves are a necessity...you can rock shory cuff gloves but if you don't zip your jacket sleeve up and you're wearing shorties, the jacket can peel back like a banana and give you some nasty rash on your arm.
trust me. i know.

Get gauntlets, shorties are annoying where they meet with the jacket for me, gauntlets are more comfortable and I dont notice them being warmer or anything. Plus youll need them if you want to ride on the track

On the subject of shorty vs gauntlet gloves I think its worth having a set of both aswell as a set of shitty weather gloves if you dont plan to be a fair weather fairy.
Shorty Gloves Im a huge fan of Joe Rocket gloves
Gauntlets - AlpineStars
Wet/Cold Weather gloves are abit hit and miss you really need to try them on and read alot of reviews on them. They are just about all uncomfortable and make you lose feeling and the cheaper ones generally dont keep the water/wind out. Most of the reputable brands are ok but look at the comfort/fit ie try before you buy.
As for pants same Goes.
Leather vs Riding Jeans
Again its well worth having a pair of both. I used to mainly wear riding jeans around town (I liked the Icon ones) Leather is good for track days and country runs etc. Downside of jeans is if you fall off you will generally still cop some road rash, but like anything you have to weigh up the risk.. Wearing leather pants to go have coffee with matesis a pain in the arse but the protection is better.

I think the majority of time if im going to be riding the bike it'll be to the motorplex and the odd cruise or highway run. So will look at a set of good leather pants i can fit my fat ass into.

Question: Has anyone ever been ticketed for riding with a helmet that has been bought online from overseas which doesn't have the AS1698 certification sticker on them?
I have an AS1698 compliant and stickered AGV helmet but also have an AGV tinted visor, which actually has "NOT AS1698 COMPLIANT" etched onto it. Never been pulled up for it, but curious whether any others have.

Heard of plenty of people getting tickets for visors. But never experienced it.
Ive been pulled over a few times with a non AS helmet and visor and never had a problem One copper even commented on how cool my helmet was and asked for a look so I obliged and passed it to him and he looked it right over and handed it back to me and said thanks LOL.

Plenty do.. Dont be mistaken. Alot of them dont care I think you will find. But there are ones that see it as an easy ticket. Alot of it comes down to luck and how you deal with the interaction with the officer at the time. Its a stupid fucking rule either way.

was on a group ride, we were all stop by the cops, they check everyone helmet and my friend who didn't have AS sticker got 3 points and $250 fine
Also if you have an accident and claim your helmet they will ask for a photo of the AS sticker

Yes I do realise that the helmet is a non AS one

Is there a specific law that says a helmet must have a AS1698 sticker? Would seem a bit strange as Australian Standards is a private company and is not part of the government.
If the law is as1698 compatible then would be more likely as you would have your snell and other ratings for stuff. The government cannot give a monopoly for safety standards out as it would be against it's own laws.
Fozzy
14-04-2013, 05:08 PM
Yes there is.
I dont have time to find the relevant legislation wording at the moment but it is out there.
244.Drivers and pillion passengers upon motor cycles to wear protective helmets
(1)In this regulation—
protective helmet means a helmet that is, or is of a standard or type that is, approved by the Director General, for the purposes of this regulation, by notice in the Gazette.
It then goes on to say that it must have an australians standard label affixed. I will find it later.

I did a little more research. Visors for motorcycles and racing car drivers are actually covered by AS1609 (a separate standard to the helmet itself), and if they are tinted, they are also subject to the rules and regulations of AS1067, the same category as any eyewear such as sunglasses. AS1067 just covers stuff such as the optical power of the lenses, what percentage of each wavelength must be blocked etc.
Either the packaging or the visor must be marked stating that the visor conforms to the correct AS, but visor itself does not NEED to be marked/stickered providing that the packaging was. AS simply state that the presence of the markings on the visor assures that they comply. If a cop questioned you on it and you were unable to prove that they comply due to a lack of markings, they'd have more than enough reason to give you a ticket I'd think. I've gone and looked at all my visors, all of them either clearly state in embossed writing whether they do or not not comply with the relevant standards.
I downloaded AS1698, AS1067 and AS1609 from SAI Global and took a look at the standards, and as with all Australian Standards, they are pretty clear.
They basically state that tinted visors are allowed providing that they adhere to AS1609 and AS1067 and that they are restricted to daytime use only. Even a compliant tinted visor could get you a ticket if you're caught using it at night.

OP, don't get bogged down in all the legality of AS stickers.
In my mind, I know my helmet is as safe as anyone they sell in australia and complies with australian standards. You know why? because its the same fucking helmet! except $200 cheaper!
Seriously, if you want to save money. Buy it online and forget about it all.
I've been riding for years with no sticker. I rock a tinted visor day and night.
Been through dozens of booze buses, ticketed, and yellow stickered and not once was the sticker or visor ever mentioned.

I can recommend AStar gloves - I've had gauntlet style SP2s for about the past 5 years and they're comfortable and well wearing. Actually, I think their only problem is one of the SP2 logos on the throttle side palm has word off.
I bought my leather jacket from ridersdiscount and it arrived super quick as well as being a fraction of the price of the same model here in Oz.

cops are pretty switched on when it comes to helmets with the correct stickers. I have been pulled over about half dozen times and every time the helmet has been checked.
I have a Bell Carbon Star helmet, really comfy, super light and really wide visor but fuck me is it noisey, so much so that i have to wear earplugs all the time.
Dont be so quick to buy stuff online, if you shop around you can get stuff locally for a similar price. Plus the fact most places will let you gear up then sit on a bike to see how it feels. Lookin at pretty pictures on the internet and reading reviews you will never be able to get a real world feel.

+1, especially when it comes to leather jackets. If its not the right size you might as well not wear it. Got my A* jacket from dale brittons, asked me what bike I rode so he could sit me on something similar, and got me to try on half a dozen jackets to explain the fitment. I ended up buying from them for like $50 or $100 more than US price, but I was happy with that because the service I got making sure I had the right size.

Just read the thread.
I rode a bike for about 4 years previously.
I purchased a Dry Ryder textile jacket with kevlar, alpinestar short gloves and a HJC helmet from day one.
These three units lasted well after i sold the bike!
Don't discount textile jackets.
The Dry Ryder jacket was the most versitile jacket i ever owned.
It had removable inserts, was kevlar lined and had a waterproof layer.
In hot Perth summers, i removed all internal layers, leaving a breathable skin over the kelvar. So much cooler with actual airflow.
In winter, refitted at inserts. Was completely waterproof and warm.
Best of both worlds!
+1 to trying them on.
If you buy something quality it will last you donkeys.
Also definitely buy some form of kevlar-lined jeans (draggin jeans, etc) or riding pants.
I didn't and when I did come off I ended up with some terrible gravel rash on my legs.
Came off at around 60km and my cotton work pants completely shredded in seconds!
Ouch doesn't really describe it...
The gloves, jacket and helmet held up extremely well.
Gloves saved my hands because i landed on my hands and slid face first about 20 metres down a road!
Jacket had small marks and the helmet was completely scratched.
Just remember with road bikes... It is not if you come off, it is WHEN you come off.
Beware of Perth drivers. Fuck.

+1 for Dale Brittons, i bought my A* jacket from there on special and it was about $30 more than it would of cost from the US once i factored in postage. I was also able to sit on a bike and see how the jacket felt when in riding position. A month later i went back to Dales the same chick who served me b4 recognised me and i bought a pair of A* leather pants on special again they ended up being about $50 more expensive than sourcing overseas but i got them there and then and was again able to sit on a bike and see how the felt.
So when i needed boots Dale Brittons was my first choice found some boots i liked the same girl served me again, this time there was no specials tho but she gave me a very healthy discount cos i was a return customer.
Will need new gloves in a couple months so guess where i'll b going.

textile jackets are ok, specially riding in the rain etc as leather isnt waterproof. And if your just gonna be commuting about then sure get one, but if you intend on doing more "spirited" rides then leather is the only way to go. Textile jackets dont usually have back protectors in there either. When i say back protector i dont mean that shitty piece of foam most brands chuck down the back of their jackets you need a proper armiadillo hard shell type protector that goes from between ur shoulder blades down to your tailbone and stops ur back from bending backwards.

well, my brother is checking out the bike for me tonight and i've given him the go ahead to make an offer.
In preperation i pulled the gun on the following.
Bell Revolver EVO Helmet - Solid
Color: Black / Size: XL
Qualifies for 30 day no-hassle exchange.
Item# 439910
Alpinestars GPX Leather Gloves
Color: Black / Size: XL

Item# 755053
Spidi XP3-S Sport Boots
Color: Black / Size: E44/US10

Didn't end up ordering a jacket, as like you guys say it's probably better i actually try one on locally then order one and not be happy with it. Not too many of the plump sizes available online.
Will probably be a good month or so till i get it down to perth anyway as it's in Port Hedland.

What are you going for?
Be really selective on jackets - work out what you ae going to do with the bike and work from their.
By fucking around, I now have 3 jackets
No 1 is good for middle of winter but too heavy for most conditions (Leather full on pads etc)
No2 is good for normal spring Autumn riding - leather again, but lighter but less padded.
No3 is a Draggin Jeans demin/Kevlar jacket - the best Ive used, and my first choice unless I gonna get wet.

Have a blast on this - feels like your doing 160 when youre doing 100 - down low is shit hot, and its cammy as all fuck -- really need decomp buttons on heads to start reliably.
Last Harley I owned for 10 yrs, and only lost 8k on it, so that wasn't bad.

Is there much a of a muchness between brands? Is Shoei really that good or is it brand wank factor?

Try them on don't just go on reviews all helmets have a different shape inside I have one mate who loves the Shoei helmets but the internal padding is an odd shape and doesn't suit his head where as an Arai and Hjc fit perfect.
Construction wise there is a few different options for materials used and how light they are

Buying the first helmet, and a couple people I know that have been riding for years have said take the Shark over the Shoei - their reasoning was same quality but lower price.

I picked up my jacket from Causeway Kawasaki. Great service there, I have Dri Rider gear where as my friend has AlpineStars.
The summer jacket I have has an inner lining that is removable - waterproof/windbreak for those colder mornings. AlpineStars doesn't do that.
Helmet - I ended up with a Shoei GT-Air as the equivalent in Shark seemed to have less padding etc and didn't fit as good. Get what fits well, test out a couple. My mate has a Kubuto at the moment.
Same deal with leather gloves - try them on and see what fits well. Helmet House in Vic Park has a good range as well to look at, Causeway budged on prices for us though.

Any AGV Corsa helmet would be a good choice. I impulse bought the Pista GP (wankery) but why the fuck not and god damn it's amazing.
