View Full Version : timing chain - stretch?
about a year ago I had a full timing chain kit installed in my car, new tensioner, guides and chain.
this stopped the rattle and the car has sat for about 8 months, yesterday I worked at getting it back on the road and timing chain is rattling its tits off again.
Wanted to go out to Mundaring tonight but im a bit worried about it letting go or jumping teeth.
any ideas what could cause this? shit oil? timing chain stretched?
you can adjust the tension which I have done, you undo a bolt on the side of the motor, hit it with a hammer, insert the crank handle in the front, wind it over a few times and then do the bolt back up (lol) has worked fine in the past but this time its made no difference what so ever.
any ideas?

As soon as you mentioned the procedure I knew exactly what car, I tried this, didn't work, put car in Quokka for free, "you remove", LOL
What's the oil like, sitting there for ages wont help it.
Full bottle of Morey's oil stabiliser will sort it :)

Will pop down to supercheap now and grab some, cheers
Made no difference, though oil was like black sludge some how. Can water do that?

Not usually, lack of servicing causes sludge and poor oil qaulity

What engine is the BA3? hydraulic or ratchet over hydraulic? Fixed tensioner? I have no idea what engine it is how am I to offer advice? :)
Tried some engine flush?
I think its a spring loaded tensioner with a slilper pad on the other side.

I can't remember, but can you remove timing cover or rockercover easily enough to check it?
Timing chain has a lower access panel but its a prick. Rocker cover comes off easily enough.
Might check it out tomorrow, I guess if it really is lose I can forget about sludge etc being the cause

I thought you were joking with the Lada. ....
I'd pull off the rocker cover and see if any of the guides are broken. If they are- timing chain kit. If not see where the slack is (by hand crank engine in direction of rotation for one turn keeping tension during the whole rotation and stop on TDC for number 1). If slack is on the guide side then something is broken there. If slack on tensioner then it's the guide there or the adjuster. If guide ok just pull the whole tension out and clean and reset it.
If you think it's the chain just wind on a new chain. You won't have to pull anything apart. It is a bunky yeh? Most replacement timing chains will come with a clip to clip new chain together. Just like a motor bike chain.
Either way... good luck.

Sounds like a shenanigans, if it's coming loose / stretching that quickly I would suggest potentially a tensioner issue or misalignment...
