Snapped a M5 socket cap bolt off inside the pivot axle collet on my bike whilst giving the suspension linkages an overhaul. Find out they are just shitty A2-50 bolts. Will be replacing them all with A4-80 or 12.9 grade high tensile (if I can find stainless?)
But now I'm left with a pivot axle that is going to suck getting the bolt out from being the threaded bit that's stuck has loctite on it...and I highly doubt my LBS will stock pivot axles (fuck Perth!)

Also found a 7900-2RS bearing that has the outer race lip that holds the dust cap on has sheared off somehow and so the dust cap does fuck all except float around and let shit in.

Centre drill the bolt then place the axle in your oven on around 90deg for a few minutes. The loctite will release and the bolt should be fairly easy to remove

2RS is 2 rubber seals, but their is generally 3 different types of rubber seals in deep groove ball bearings, full contact, light contact and non contact.
Full contact has more drag, but the best sealing
Non contact had no seal drag, but has a path for contaminents to enter
Light contact has less drag and still makes contact with both inner and outer race, but doesnt seal as well as a full contact.

2RZ (or ZZ, 2ZR etc. depending on manufacturer) is a metal shield and has a larger gap than a non contact seal.

It was the little bolt that snapped- so deep in the pivot axle, not easy to get to. Regardless didn't come out, couldn't centre punch it as the bolt broke off with the top looking like a chewed dogs bone. Got the axle out of the bike and a new one on it's way from Vicco.

I know, they messed up with that when they hit panic mode and did a voluntary round circa GFC peak panic period. My issue is, that if I am leaving anyway, I worry that some poor old fuck that would be keen on doing my position in a redeployment scheme wont get that chance, and would struggle getting another job due to age etc, and considering my role is a prime retirement warm up role I imagine a few would go for it, unless the pay drops in the redeployment offers.

Just recently the media/police jumped onto the 60km/h sections of the Mitchell Fwy saying thousands of motorists are speeding through there everyday. Fixed speed camera catch idiot after idiot and mobile units parked behind bushes at the bottom of a hill in 60km/h zones would be making a killing. Little to no crashes in the areas. Speed limits are too low and people are safely traveling the areas at greater speeds all the time.

Also seems like bullshit when the media come out and say there has been "x" amount of road deaths this season and that is an "x" amount increase on last season. How much has the driving population of Perth increased in this time and what is the driving population / fatal crash percentage would be the way to look at it.

No disputing that at all. However in order for braking distances to be greatly shortened, you need to be alert in combination with "drop 5". Unfortunately, many of Perth's drivers and the elderly just aren't! A greater reaction time would eat up half the braking distance :p

If someone thinks they're being safe by doing (what they think is) 75 in an 80 zone, but realistically they're doing 68 (due to speedo discrepancy... then really how safe is doing 12kmh under the limit? It's going to cause all sorts of road rage and risky actions by impatient road users behind them. I personally don't see what is so hard about staying alert and doing the speed limit. If everyone did that there would be little need to drop 5. Except in the pissing rain with lowered visibility.

Drive to the conditions. If people are driving like idiots, book them. Tailgating, excessive speed, erratic driving, pissy driving, slow driving, swerving in and out of lanes, not merging correctly etc. that is putting people at risk or affecting traffic flow should be the focus but it doesn't make enough easy money. Would make driving much simpler and easier, traffic would flow better and probably less accidents with people paying attention.

Pinging people for driving 66 in a 60 zone on a empty road in good conditions or 125 on the open road up to Kalbarri is not saving lives. It's just easy money.

I was in Queensland a few weeks back, they had roadworks along the freeways too. People actually slowed down, because right at the start of the reduced speed section is a police car just sitting there with its lights on. If there's a longer section of roadworks, they might have another one along at some point too. They do this cos a few years back some pingpingpingping plowed hit and killed a road worker.

Every now and then you hear about some shortage of police in WA, which could explain why they don't do this here. The only time I know of that police have sat on the side of the road here for a certain reason was next to or near speed cameras during their operational strike. See the pattern forming? Revenue. Police are officers of the peace first and foremost, nailing people for exceeding a speed limit by about 10kph on a road more than capable of taking it seems to be more important than ensuring people's safety or stopping actual crimes where people can be convicted. But that's what's gonna happen if they keep a shortage by focusing on traffic duties to make the state money

I didn't see any speed cameras and several cops cruised past me at around 130, no fucks were given by them. If you hit someone at 60km/hr and hit them at 55km/hr - pretty sure the person would still be in a load of pain. I understand slower speed means less braking distance, but to a driver being inattentive it makes no difference.

Effective braking should be taught and thus they should ditch that pointless Hazard Perception Test and make the P Plate test a mandatory DTEC course or the like - gravel driving, understeer and oversteer loss of control, threshold braking, awareness on the road - all valuable tools that are more beneficial than a 20min HPT.

Also, education. This. My school runs a course in Year 12 (forgotwhatitscalled) where they learn about YOLO in the truest sense of the term. They visit road trauma victims in hospital, people who are permanently incapacitated and see the struggles of real physical rehabilitation. A real eye opener.

at the end of the day it comes down to car quality and build. Should be similar to other places that try get older cars off the road and encourage the purchases of newer safer vehicles (scrappage program). A lot of us are rolling round in vehicles with 4,6 piston calipers where 5km/h still makes a difference but if you mock a vehicle like that up against a single or dual sliding caliper 80's, 90's vehicle the results in braking distance would be phenomenal.

I myself when there is some sort of abrupt stop in traffic ahead I usually look in the rear mirror and then apply brakes slighty more than I have to so if the person behind is going to rear end me I've actually left extra room in front of my vehicle to move foward to potentially save my car

Yes, hence I said it comes down to threshold and effective braking.

Slamming your brakes and hoping for the best is idiotic, and that is where 5km/hr makes a massive difference.

The AHG/RAC DTEC course showed this to perfection - threshold braking halved the stopping distance at 60km/hr compared to slamming brakes. So realistically 5km/hr or not will make fuck all difference if you brake effectively. Those types of media videos are scare tactics rather than teaching mechanisms, and if anything, stupid.

800-1000m stopping distance doesn't count when you're doing a top speed run. We're talking differences on our roads, not 200km/hr + on an open stretch.

At the end of the day - driver inattentiveness and complacency is more the issue than anything else. Again, 20-30km/hr UNDER the limit is more dangerous than 5km/hr over in peak traffic situations like the freeway, a vast difference between vehicle speeds on the same stretch of road is an issue. Dropping 5 won't help the person playing with the radio, shaving, putting on a tie, playing with their phone, zoning out etc.

The campaigns shouldn't be about slowing down anyway, it should be about attentiveness (applause to RAC for their latest adverts, an attention controlled car) - most of us drive well maintained and modified cars often modifying the standard equipment for higher spec aftermarket equipment - yet are targeted for doing so. I'd rather be on the road with well modified cars than John Doe in his 1994 Commodore that started it's life as a V6 and had an engine swap to a V8 with nothing else altered to compensate for the increase in power or Jane Doe in her Echo driving at 80 km/hr in the right hand lane on the freeway.

Edit: I also applaud areas of Europe having been on some roads there with vehicles going 200km/hr plus, the drive attentiveness I witnessed is far superior.

Velocity is a vector so basically it's just speed with a direction. you may be thinking of Kinetic energy ( = 1/2 m*v^2 ) or momentum (m*v) ??

always subscribed to the 5km/h means fuck all train but this is in line with units I currently take at uni so interested to check the maths


from a physics/eng point of view you probably want to look at the work-energy principle so force * stopping distance (i.e work) = - 1/2 m*(v1-v2)^2

so with a 1500kg car and assuming constant stopping distance of 1m a rough calculation yields a force of about 208,300 N at 60k's and 175,000 N at 55k's .... so 5km/h makes ~33,300 N difference in the force of the crash

so 10% increase in speed results in approx 20% greater impact force....

can also apply to braking distance - work required to stop the car will be the same but force will be (relatively) fixed and dependent on the actual cars brakes so to provide the necessary work stopping distance must increase.

i saw the taxis in japan with the word "auto door" sticker on the window, and was told about it. wierdly for the two weeks i was in japan, i never once saw a taxi open its door automatically, even when i took a taxi i waited, and waited for the door to open only to have to manually open it myself.

Mine is fuckin ONION, this shit somehow makes it onto my pizza, pasta, roast even if its not ment to be on the dish. I fuckin hate the shit. Biggest thing i hate is asking at a restaurant if the dish has onion in it to then be told nope or if it does they wont put it on. Get the dish and BULK onion through the sauce. Take it back and they say... you cant taste it. Fuk that shits me, if you cant taste it why put it on the dish or in the sauce.

BMW already have multiple position opening hinges, where it will stop at whatever point the door opens to, it doesn't have to "click" onto the next part of the latch.....and they have "soft close" doors.... been around since the E65 (2002), my folks car has it.
