Well I have just bought my first 4x4 (and its my new daily), some will turn their nose up at it but I actually quite like the FJ Cruisers. Although not a diesel still can tow a car trailer which is what I need really.

I am new to 4 wheel driving although my dad has a navara atm and he has had a few in the past and I do intend to take the FJ offroad.

will be good to get out and about off road with some experienced people anyway

Nothing wrong with the FJ - it's a Prado underneath (120 Series, I believe), so plenty of mod potential.

it seemed awesome to drive and after modding the ss to beyond daily potential i needed something decent as a daily

also ordered the model with an extra (long range) tank and crawl control, dont know if ill use it or not but.

They are huge in the US an there is a fuck load of aftermarket parts for them.

Fuck they drink fuel HARD though.

Good choice on the long range tank.

3" king performance lift and 35s fit quite well on these with minimal mods to body.

Buys FJ as daily because he's sick of driving modified cars on the street every day

The trd chargers are only for 2006-2009 models I think? Won't fit vvti engines, although bullet do a kit for em over here

When I first saw these in the crayola blue and yellow, I was not a fan. But after seeing many on the street in black, white, khaki, grey I think they look tough as nails. There's an awesome black one getting around owned by one of the owners (or owners kid?) of roxby thai on south street. Looks mean as!

too bad about the interior :S

Happy to go 4wd, done heaps of it... probably took 2wd cars where some 4wd cars couldn't. Did help being a hire car though...

Mines a bog stock 2012 D22 Navara as my daily. Fitted with a warn winch so as long as we got a shovel or a tree..... we will be good to get into and out of trouble.

Really? When did that become available? So it's the 3.0 D4D?

Is this an aftermarket thing or through Toyota? So keen on a diesel FJ.

pgc
26-02-2013, 09:24 AM
Must be aftermarket because it's not a factory Toyota fitment.

I certainly couldn't find anything in the press releases about it, and Toyota would be preaching it from the roof-tops if it had released it.

sounds like way too much effort to do diesel conversion.
I think its non genuine /aftermarket?

So apparently the 'facelift' or 2013 model upgrade whichever one you want to call it, has better fuel economy (apparently anyway)

He went and approached Toyota and has had it ordered in from overseas specifically for him (weather or not they are fitting the motor as an aftermarket or not i dont know) , i dont know the finer details only that the vehicle price was about 10,000 more then the petrol version here, so around the 60,000 mark and then he had to pay 12,000 ontop to get it brought over i will get more details when he picks it up.

Will be simliar to that site I linked, toydiesel or something as they do the conversions from the state's. It will be a similar setup to how walkinshaw modify the vehicles after they leave the factory but still retain the warranty etc

talked to him again last night, apparently japan had released their desiel model around november last year, which is when he ordered his. So i do believe it is a toyota fitted engine from factory. he told me the states havnt released the desiel version as of yet.

It wouldnt be direct from a toyota dealer, they simply cant licence it because it wouldnt be adr compliant and would lose their franchise as it would be a breach of their dealer agreement importing a grey import model.
When the prado mudflaps were extended by 60mm to stop the paint chipping they were going to have to do the adr process again because it would have changed the advertised fuel efficiency figures due to more drag, I cant see them just saying " Yeah bro its just like the petrol model so just bring it in"

I recently purchased an FJ and really happy with it... although it does chew through the fuel and the tank is a bit on the small side...

tows my track car around with out a problem and yeah as has been said drives like a prado.. very nice and quiet.. apparently there is an update version out or coming out that has a bigger fuel tank... wish I had of known then before buying mine... but oh well...

i stupidly specced mine with all the toyota options except the rock rails.. plus had the dealer install the lift kit and change out the tyres with the Cooper A/T 3... the lift kit turned out well as they used WA suspensions to do the job and included KYB shocks and lovells springs...

<a href="http://s570.beta.photobucket.com/user/servo2605/media/fjcruiser_zps2e3e7bd6.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss146/servo2605/fjcruiser_zps2e3e7bd6.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo fjcruiser_zps2e3e7bd6.jpg"/></a>

Just saying they are not everyone's cup of tea but for what i wanted it for (ie towing the track car and a bit of off roading) I think its a good choice over spending another 15K or more on a prado...

Chompy
28-02-2013, 09:29 AM
^^ looks good, just the lift kit and tyres make it look all that better, the one ive ordered has the bigger tank so luckily i got that lol

how do you find the cooper tyres? will be looking at getting some decent off roaders and i heard that they last a while too?

for some reason I dont like the white ones but yours really looks good

RoarPwr
28-02-2013, 10:19 AM
Cheers.. Yeah i went the white as i didn't particularly like all the crayola colour options... I had my eye on a grey one but got a better deal on this one so it was all good...

The coopers are OK... but i am unsure as to whether they need better balancing or whether due to them being coopers with the so called deaper tread blocks you seem to get a bit of wobble at around 80-90 km/h...

Its going in for a balance anyways to see if that sorts it out... Apparently the coopers last ages as well.. they also have a 90k KM waranty but dunno if thats worth anything or not...

Yeah all it needs now is the xrox front bar and 4 spotties attached to the roof rack and I'm pretty well happy with it...

Crawl is great for rock climbing vehicle recovery

Coopers shouldn't be shaking - not normal for any tyre.

Go get them re balanced!

I was talking with my local Toyota rep about these yesterday. He has bigger tyres on his and reckons it wobbles around at 80km/hr. maybe a coincidence.

Was thinking of getting a fj but changed my mind as soon as I sat in one. Driver vision is really really bad. How are you finding the vision?

RoarPwr
02-03-2013, 04:55 PM
I find the vision is not that bad.... i have had cars much worse...
My wife doesn't particularly like but if you have ever sat VE commdore ute then you would know what bad vision is really like.

Wobble is not a coincidence - if you're struggling to get it right take it to Richards tyrepower in Osborne park. They have the equipment to fix it :)

nah they aren't, the auto is pretty smooth changing though.

took it on the sand for the first time and was awesome off road, i chucked it in low range 4wd and the diff lock and had some fun, sprayed some sand then got stung by a bee when i got out :/
