So I applied for an expedition mechanic position a few months back and I am flying to Adelaide next week for the selection process/interviews.
Anyone here been to them/to Antarctica to work for the AAD? Trying to get an idea of what to expect at the event, supposedly there is a chance of sitting around and waiting for 5 hours only to see how you handle doing nothing lol.
Cheers

How about the "huddling naked for warmth" test?
Have you been practicing? Would you like some more practice?

LOL man why do you pretend to be gay on the internet? Does it give you some jerk off material to think about whilst you are with your girlfriend? Did your Dad touch you? What do you get out of it?

Not angry, just interested.
Wondering if I should switch from calling people out and being a pingpingpingping to pretend gay.
Seeing what is on offer with that persona

I'm about to retire it anyway. Everybody knows and nobody is uncomfortable when I try it these days. Lost its charm.

Usually have to prove yourself on a 6 month summer stint before you do a 12 month winter stint. Wonder if I could sneak my shotgun and clay target throwing down in the personal goods crate haha

Is the job fifo? Or bibo?
Sounds interesting, if its possible to stay stimulated in that environment.

never been so cant comment too much but the making you wait for hours would possibly be on the cards if so how well do you handle sitting around for 5 hours doing nothing. Dont forget you prob wont have a smart phone to use in antartica so i personally would take a book and read it while they make you wait. my 2c

A friend of the family worked there for 12 months for the BoM. He described it (and verified with pictures) that it's pretty much exactly as the nature documentaries portray it.

I wouldn't be too worried about the cold, I've been in Canada and is was -38 but you just put on layers and it's really not that bad.
Apparently a major issue is the amount of daylight, too much in the summer (sun never goes down) and too little in the winter (sun never comes up) and it fucks with peoples body clocks and thus they start to get a bit crazy. I would strongly consider that before you go.

Yeah been thinking about that, but never had drama's shifting sleeping patterns whilst doing night shift on site so I cant see a lack of light killing me. Although you never know until you experience it with that.
Just spoke to a guy at work who did two 15-18 month winters with a 6 month gap between them. Highly rated it, but he did them before they had this selection process. Said he knows of some that have done it. Open bar on the first night and they sit back and see who hits it hard haha, they fail.

i've always had a small interest in wanting to do one of these work trips myself, I dont know why. Perhaps the isolation is appealing on some level.
i say good luck and if you do go, keep us updated.
