i got home today to find a letter in the mailbox from ebay. I opened it up and it was a $10 paypal voucher and a letter thanking me for opening up a paypal account. Looked all legit was all colourful and shit and had all ebays ABN numbers etc down the bottom and a customer service number.
But i havent opened up a paypal account recently, Peta and I use her paypal account for online purchases. I have an old one that i havent used in about 3 years, before i moved into current address so paypal should have no record that i am even at this address. But last week i did have a fraudulant claim made against my debit card my John Christian Society in the US for $4, luckily the bank were straight onto it and stopped the card.
So i phoned the customer support number after sitting on hold for about 10min listening to some dodgy music on repeat a woman with an american accent answered, i thought this was a bit weird considering the CS number lists eastern states opening times. I tell her what has happened and straight away she asks for my email address. i tell her i dont have a paypal account or an email address i use, after saying something along the lines of she needs it so she can check if there is an open account or any claims i give her an old email address, she then asks for my phone number to see if there is an account linked so i give her my home phone number that i never use. At the stage i'm getting sus so i ask if this is a legit letter to which she replies yes yes all legit we r just trying to find out why its been sent out. She then asks for my home address, so i tell her if this is a legit letter then would u not have my address on ur system so u can send the letter out? she again says she needs my address so she can check if there is any claims. while she is dribbling shit about looking for anything suspect i pick up my phone and check on the paypal website what the customer support number is, and suprise suprise its not the number on the letter. The woman then tells me she will transfer me to someone else who can help me at this stage i hang up.
I then called the number on the website and its the same computer greeting but alot clearer and gives u the typical "press 1 for sales" etc so i press the option i needed. The same music as before was playing again but its alot clearer and doesnt repeat itself so often. Also this time i was on hold for about 20sec before someone answered. This time was an indian woman but again she asked for phone number or email although this time was before asking my name. But by this stage i cbf so i hang up.
so if it is a scam linked to my old debit card i figure they have details of a cancelled card, an old email, my home phone number and my address. not to worried TBH, but i'm guessing if i wasnt so suspisious they could of got a bit more info out of me.
